Hello I am new here. And have a couple of questions

First off I would like to say that this is a great site with many wonderful people and their babies. My baby girl will be coming home Feb. 6th she is coming from another state and I have the option to pick her up personally or have her sent via airline I don't know how comfortable I am having her shipped. My question is has anyone done this and what effect if any does it have on the puppy. The breeder I am getting her from assures me that it is fine to do. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Secondly crate training. I have heard many people have done this with great results but how often should she be let out ect??

I am new here to =)
I had a dog shipped from brazil, and he was 100% fine. my parents jsut had their papillon shipped from Iowa to california and he was also just fine.
if you can pick her up,I would consider it, you'll get to check out her breeder first hand and the conditions where she is from, second you should save a few hundred becuase you won't need to ship. I am wondering why breeders don't seem to have problems with weather shipping embargo's. When we moved we could not ship our poets due to a cold weather embargo. when my mom was getting her pup,she almsot couldn't get her due to the hot weather embargo.
mine is comming from several hours away. luckily, they drive right by me to the airport to ship,so I get to meet them there for my baby.
I get mine feb 12th-14th they aren't sure when they will ship.
congrats!
the above is from me forgot to sign in first!
Hi Dena,

Aww what a cutie your new puppy is!!!

While I don't have experience with flights as I picked my puppy up and brought him home via car. I just wanted to comment on the crate. Most dogs will not soil in the same place they sleep. A little pup around 8 wks can only "hold it" for aprox 2 hrs. I think the rule of thumb is 2 hrs for every month after 8 wks old. I hope readers will correct me if I'm wrong.

My four month old pup can "hold it" for aprox 4.5 hrs...(the time I'm away from home.) Although I make sure he goes before I leave the house and let him out immediately apon my return. For the first 6 wks I actually would race home at lunch time to let him out in the yard to do his business and race back to work. I also got up in the middle of the night to let him out as they are too small to hold it all night. I should mention that I didn't crate him however as he spent his time with my other two dogs..indoors, not out.

He has had the odd accident now at four months but I think it's easier with more than one dog as he follows the lead of my other two. Always going outside when they do and at 13 and 15 they haven't had an accident in years.

Dunno if I helped you much but wish you all the best of luck with your new pup.

Marianne :D
I crate trained our OES and he does great! He will be 1 year old on February 2. The formula I was given by my brother (a vet in Michigan) is that dogs can usually hold their bladders one hour for every month of age plus one additional hour. I am a crate training advocate not only for housetraining reasons but because the crate comes to represent comfort and security to your dog. Our dog, Truman, sometimes naps in his crate and even sleeps there at night when we leave the door open. Besides, if you travel with your dog, you can take their crate along and they can have their familiar comfy bed wherever they are. I wish we were so lucky!

I noticed you are from Kansas. We live in Wichita - where do you live?
I just wanted to say thank you to the people who replied or looked at my post. I am extremely sad to say I will not be getting my little Abby after all this waiting. She was diagnosed with heart problems so the breeder I am going through is keeping her. She has offered me my money back or a replacement puppy. I just don't know I am so in love with this dog I just can't stop crying. Again thank you for your advice. Dena
Ohhhh Joan and I are so sorry to hear that. We offer our condolences, and hope everything works out for the best for you.
Hi,

I too am very sad when I read your post - how heartbreaking for you. I pray things work out for you.

Marianne
i am so sorry to hear that!
I know how you feel as I fell in love with my pup,and did not end up getting him. I quickly found there are lots of pups out there to love. Keep looking, there is a furry ball of love out there waiting for you!
I am so sorry about your pup, but I know you will find another to love. It may not seem it now, but it may be better this way instead of not finding out until after you got her and perhaps losing her very early in life. I worry about my Sheepie all the time because he has epilepsy - I am always concerned about what effect the medication has on his lifespan. He is three now, and from what I've read, he won't live as long as other dogs because the medication affects his kidneys. Dont get me wrong, I love him dearly, more than anything, but I would not have picked him had I known. My mom always said he was meant for me to take care of. Please dont give up. :o
Well I am back feeling much better than before. I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words about Abby. And you were right I have found another fluffball to love her name is Lilly and she will be coming home March 9th. My breeders daughter offered me one of her pups since her moms pups were all sold, which I find extremely nice since she was selling hers for $350.00 more than I had paid for the first one. Also the breeders vet thinks that Abby will grow out of the heart murmer and live a full life!!!! :D My breeder promises updates and pictures of her often which makes me feel a whole lot better. Hopefully I will soon have some better pictures to post of Lilly.Again THANK YOU!!!!! You guys are great and extremely caring people!!! I am thankful to have made friends like all of you.
