Help with potty training

For the past two weeks we have kept our puppy in a crate at night but let her out about every two hours throughout the night when she started crying. This was ok since we didn't have to get up and go to work but now since the holidays are over we need her to sleep more. We put her in a bigger crate last night and moved her to the basement but she cried and barked all night long. When we did let her out she was obviously very upset.

She is still very young (8 weeks old) and I know she doesn't have the bladder control to hold it all night but we need to find a way to keep her comfortable through the night. Will she accept her crate soon? Do we let her cry all night? Is there a better way? Any help you all can provide will be VERY appreciated!

Here's how we handled the crate thing: We put Truman in the crate for the night but we took turns getting up a couple of times at night to let him out to go outside. (I know, it's a pain in the ---- but it's worth it when they are trained). I've been told the rule of thumb is they can hold their bladder 1 hour for each month of age plus one extra hour. So, for 2 months, that means 3 hours. That turned out to be pretty much true for our dog. Remember, as time goes on, they can hold it longer and longer.

Also - for the first few nights, we put the crate in our bedroom. He didn't whine or cry at all. I wonder if your dog feels abandoned with the crate down in the basement? After a few nights, we moved the crate to the kitchen which is close to the center of activity in the house. He adjusted very well to this new location.

One last thing, we always give Truman a treat after we put him in his crate. He's always good about going in his crate now as he knows he will get a treat. In fact, sometimes he runs over to his crate, gets in and turns around looking for a treat - even when it's not time to go to bed. I guess he thinks it's worth a try!
