Fencing

do you have to fence OES in

I think it's a good idea to have a fence for any dog, just for their safety and your peace of mind. Clyde, my OES, sticks to me like glue and comes when called but you never know if something will run by and he'll feel compelled to chase it. Lucy, our Briard mix, is a runner and could never be outside without being fenced in or on a rope. In the old house, before Clyde, we had a huge yard and no fence so it was a bummer for Lucy always having to be on a tether when she wanted to be outside. Now they both stay outside for hours.
Hi! Just one thing....a fence is great as long as there are not danger zones inside for the puppy to get into. We have a huge back lawn all completely fenced in. We thought- great, a place were Bogart can run and play. Well, you see there are rocks in many landscaped areas and rocks = fishing rocks out of Bogart's mouth before he swallows them. We began fencing off these areas and well- hand walk him in the lawn until he gets older and outgrows the everything must go in my mouth phase.
Hi,

I believe that fencing in a nice size area is the only way an OES can get the exercise they need and have the freedom for time to themselves that they require just for doggie interests. This is really true if you are raising a puppy. It also frees up your time when letting them out and the waether may be not quite what we wish for. If you are getting a older OES it isn't nearly as important but it is still a good idea for safety. I feel that they need this exercise and freedom daily for good mental and physical health.
