Wondering about oes.org and other forums and lists and chats

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering how many of us are also members, active or inactive, of other lists, chats and/or forums devoted primarily to Sheepdogs.

If you feel like it, I would be very grateful if people would simply list their OES "haunts", and whether they are active there or not, and why.

Thanks!

I'll start:

oes.org Active 'Cause I love everyone here
oes-l Inactive
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
just oes.org because of how user-friendly it is.

in fact, i stopped going to a labradoodle forum despite my interest just because of their choice of forum style. too many people weren't willing to change to something easier just because it took them long enough to use what they were using (something complicated and unreliable).

involved in other dog forums but they don't have OES' there ;)
oes.org very active LOL

Old English Sheepdog Club- only been there 2 time

I like it here, easy to use and everyone is friendy
Deana
This is my only sheepdog community - technically the forum is user friendly, high speed and constantly improved; the people in this community are wonderful; and the information is top notch. Why go anywhere else?
I have to ditto Dailey's Mom
This is the only one I use.
Everyone is so welcoming and I've made many friends here.
I "get" the OES list sent to my e-mail addy, but I'm just a lurker, and i'm often guilty of  deleting the e-mails without reading them if I'm too busy. Besides- no one here teases me (too badly anyways  ) for participating without having my own sheepie:roll: , even if I have been a member for a while...

Still waiting...

Karen :)
I LOVE this forum. :D It's the first one I've ever participated. I agree with Sue, it's user friendly, frequently improved, and the folks here are genuinely fun to chat with. :D

I just this week joined the OES-L. I'm finding it a bit cumbersome and overwhelming due to the nature of it. I like this format MUCH better. So far, I've not posted anything on the list, just read some of the messages.

It's ironic that you ask this now, too, as I was wondering myself how many of "us" used the List.
Personally, I HATE email lists. This form of reading/posting is so much easier. I'm likely to read a lot more of what is written this way than joining an email list. Even if I requested a topic, unless I am in the mood to read it "Right then" ...it always ends up in the trashcan or just unread if the daily digest can be found online.
I was with 'another group' but I really didn't care for it. The group
felt too argumentative and harsh - not to mention the system was
archaic and just a pain in the butt to use. Plus there were several people
who I find difficult to tolerate - sorry to admit that. I have a really hard
time 'looking the other way' especially in that format. Ok - call me
childish.
I had a tough time getting off that one too - like I said, archaic.

It gives me warm fuzzies to come back to Ron and this crew. I enjoy
this group so much more, even when I don't agree with everyone.
It is much more friendly and helpful and feels more like home.

Thanks Ron - we adore you.

Shellie
OES-L Inactive. I'm like a few others, it was really too cumbersome and confusing to my poor little feeble mind.

OES.ORG Active, saved in my favorites and currently trying to figure out how to access on my cell phone.

Do I need to say more?
This is the only warm and fuzzy place I go too......
I am a member of several oes groups, lists and forums, however this is the only one I remain active on. OES-L I find is only about rescue, which is fine, but it seems the only new posts are white light (what IS that anyway?? :? ) and rescue dust or whatever. A great purpose to be sure, but nothing I can learn from. The constant patting each other on the back seems redundant. (No offense meant to those who still enjoy other lists etc, this is just my personal opinion) Some of the people from oes-l have been helpful to me also.
There is so much more to oes.org, and when we do get involved with rescue efforts, usually there are a lot more times where we have helped someone KEEP their dog with training and behaviorial tips, stories of personal experience, grooming tips, etc. When someone does have to give up their dog, I would like to think that for the most part we are supportive and helpful, not criticising and condemning.
Our community here is more like a large group of friends, who all have at least one thing in common.
Isn't this the only place about sheepdogs? I didn't even know there was anything else out there!! Besides, this is probably the easiest and most enjoyable forum I've ever been to!!

Sharon
I am on the OES-L as well. I have tried to stop the e-mails...but I guess I don't know how! So they keep coming and I usually do delete them before I read them also!
I was a little upset a few weeks back about a discussion directed at Ron and the OES Forum, that's when I tried to get off the list.
I do find some of the list members to be very opinionated at times, though we all have our opinions on issues...but it seems to be more of a healthy debate than direct attacks. Does that make sense...without offending? :?
Anyway, I love the forum and it has been a great help and support for me, Gooch and Murph! I love how we all laugh with each other and cry with each other as though we are family! I can't think of a better place to share our stories with all of you...and I love hearing all the antics of the other sheepies, I really feel like I know you all! :D

Well, that was quite an essay! If someone could help me with paragraph 1...that would be great!
I am asking for people's opinion and experience with oes.org and with other forms of electronic community so that I might be able to catch an idea or two for improving everyone's experience here.

I am not advocating that you or anyone leave The List. The OES-L serves a very good purpose, and my personal disagreement shouldn't take away from that value. Most importantly, should people from The List decide that they'd like to try -or switch to- oes.org, I'd like for their welcome here to be warm. The opposite is true as well; anyone who would like to use the List from oes.org, I hope that your welcome there will be warm.

That said, to answer your question, you can either leave OES-L completely, or you can just suspend receipt of emails...

You'll have to login there. Just click the link below, and if you're not logged in, I believe you'll be prompted to do so. If once you login you can't find the options page, just come back here and click this link again. The second time will probably be the charm.

http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/scripts/wa- ... BED1=oes-l

If you click on the button labelled "Leave OES-L" it will eliminate your subscription. If you ever want to rejoin, you'll have to apply and be accepted all over again.

However, if you check the box next to "Mail delivery disabled temporarily [NOMAIL] " and then scroll down and click on "Update Options" you're still a member, can read the archives and can post, but you won't get any email from The List.
I can't say any more good things about our "family" here than has already been said. It is my absolute favorite site and I feel like I'm missing something unless I can check it 2-3 times/day.

I am also inactive in oes-l. WAY too many e-mails, too cumbersome. Not user friendly.

Don't ever leave us, Ron!

Chris
Oes.org only

Thank you again for a great informative site.

Its constantly updated and improved--and innovative.
Enjoy exchanging ideas, and learning so much from
our members.

For me, no need to look elsewhere :D
This is the only one for me!
I belong to a couple of forums. This is only oes one. ron I would just like to say it is the most well run, wonderful comfy people on here As a female I always feel perfectly safe on here. I just cannot fault it
Totally inactive on OES-L, like the others I don't like the system they use. Also inactive on the Yahoo OES group, never much going on there.

I like the forum because it's user friendly and I've actually met and become friends with people from here. I also like the advice and all the stories about real life "dog" things.

I can't think of anything you could change to make it better, my only suggestion would have been to let us see who's chatting without logging in and you already did that :D
oes.org: absolutely and totally! This place rocks!

Some other online oes group: hardly any posts and most of the people were chuckleheads.

OESCA Newsletter: Good stuff for stories, health articles and the general state of the OESCA but not a lot of stuff for new people or people who don't compete in one way or another with their dogs. Also has lots of who's who type stuff, all of which makes more sense after you actually meet the people.

OES-L: applied, never got an answer. Apparently I wasn't good enough. Or I did something wrong in the application process but that was at the same time I joined here and now I'm glad that nothing came of the List because I'm hopelessly devoted (Sorry, Grease was just on  ) to Ron and this place and, oh yeah, everybody else here too.
WooHoo for us!
This is THE ONLY OES FORUM :D Thank to you Ron, and all the great members.
Never heard of the LIST??As for OES forums, this is my only one. I was in a few others for a minute or two, because it was for all pets, not just dogs.

I've also visited a friendly pregnancy site, that is a warm friendly group as well...all experience the same losses and success. One thing in common there was everyone has had an ectopic or miscarriage...fear brings you there, or the questions of it all. I like there system somewhat, but this is better. If you want to check it's style out, www.ectopic.org I think.

One thing I don't like is if someone new posts, then it get s bumped to the top...so often posts get lost, and noone knows it was there, unless you go a couple pages back.

Another forum I like but not active in is the weightwatchers.ca site. It's user friendly, lots of info, and very helpful people.
I found OES at a time when I was in desperate need of help. I think the first reply I got referred me to the NEOES site. After others seemed to agree with the referral I emailed them.

Later I found out about the OES-L and how to get on it as well. I've been addicted to this forum since I found it. And, love being a part of it. Unlike the other one, you can usually have discussions about various topics and not cause a ruckus with your personal opinion. Everyone seems willing to help, to teach, to learn and to debate.

The OES-L was ok in the beginning. I was grateful for their help as well, but after being on there awhile I feel that JMPO if you agree with the majority (which seems to be the rich and famous), and if you only talk about cute little stupid things as a debate topic your safe and welcome. Wonder from that and put in your honest opinion, look out. I've received a few unfriendly emails and even a debatable phone call from people on the list. Email me, but don't call me. If I need someone to change my opinion I'll be happy to ask for that service. I've been told I should apologize for my opinion, etc.......Sorry, but................I had gotten off the list but got back on to inform them of my Shadow's death. I will again be getting off, this time for good.

The OES forum is fantastic. Look forward to participating. Now without any dogs, I may slack off to regroup, but its hard to quit a addition overnight.
OES.ORG Rules!

We're really want to congratulate Ron for keeping such a great forum. The community here is very friendly and I feel welcome here, and it is by far, the best forum I've ever participated on.

Thanks Ron for keeping sucha great place, and a big hand :clappurple: to all the memebers for keeping oes.org a friendly place! I'm really glad to be an active member!
I agree, this forum is very much number one!! I am on many, many different forums, as well as started a little one myself (not on sheepies). This forum has a lot of unique qualities, the members here are so sincere and thoughtful towards each other. It feels like a family here. There really isn't any topic about sheepies that hasn't been discussed at length, so the knowledge base for OES, is just astounding.
Members feel that they can come for advice on raising their children, support to quit smoking, well wishes as new sheepie fans are born.
I have had so much going on in my life, that I don't have the same time to participate as much as I once did, but the forum is still a daily part of my life, and I keep up with all of you, and your families.
I know Ron must blush, at all the compliments, and I know that he would rather me not, BUT.....Thank you, Ron and Joan. You started this communtiy for all of us, and while everyone has helped to turn it into the best communtiy, none of this would have been possible without you and your love of sheepies.
OES.org is by far the best forum, I give it 2 thumbs up, and Jack and Annie give it 2 paws up.

Stormi and co.
I'm on the Yahoo Sheepie list. It is extremely low volume--maybe 6 messages a day. And I don't like e-mail lists; they seem archaic (like Usenet). This is my #1 place even though I don't have a sheepie (yet). The format is easy to use. I appreciate having non-sheepie categories like cooking. My only suggestion would be fixing the link to the repair place forum. I might be doing this wrong, but when I click there, I don't find an easy way to get back to oes.org.

Thanks Ron for giving us oes.org.
Ron knows that I'm the trouble maker on the OES List. Although I choose to read the List at my leisure, and not get emails every time someone cares to write anything. A lot of the contributors on that list seem to very knowledgeable about OES but there are a few that are set in their ways and don't have respect for other people's opinions. I am glad though that it's available as I have found some good info there.

The thing I like best about this forum, besides the super friendly people, and the easy interface is that Ron has done such a great job with getting OES.org ranked high in google and when a newbie sheepdog person starts looking for info about OES they seem to come to OES.org as a gateway. I'm sure Tarja Peters can also attest by all of the re-directs to OESCA for breeder referral and all of the rescue option info that's available here too. I think by far that is the most important thing is to keep people educated to what this breed is all about and helping them make good choices.

Very true. There are a lot of things to learn on the List, and a lot of good people. It's just ashame that that few make it an unpleasant visit at times. jmpo, of course. :(

Me too :D

Bless your hearts, I'm starting to feel like you all are family :D :D

I actually guess I have to say that I think folks here are very respectful and accepting. No we don't always agree but I don't think I've ever seen anyone respond in a rude or unkind fashion (at least not that I have read). It isn't always possible to know for sure what the intent behind a posting is and I am sure there are times when something is written with the best of intentions or perhaps even in jest and it may be misunderstood. Or that it may be interpreted as being harshe when it wasn't intended to be so.

Believe me, I have been on forums where folks were mean spirited and unkind, this ain't one of 'em. :D
Im starting to get all mushy now.....Ginny said it all....Everyone is nice and respectful. Everyone really cares about their pets and wants the opinions of others...It has helped me with Panda tremendously and the plus is that I have made fantastic friends..

Everyones invited over....wine, hor devours, and of course bring the sheepies...

kisses to all!
This is the only sheepdog site I belong to. It is informative, the people are all nice to each other and it is a lot of fun. I like reading all the posts in every subject area. It seems like we all know each other just by talking about our sheepies.

[b]THIS SITE IS THE BEST!

[size=18]THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE ARE THE BEST!

OUR SHEEPIES ARE THE BEST!
I came across this site when my sheepie had health problems, I signed up a little while ago. I don't know about other sheepie sites as I really like this one, every night I log in and read all the posts. There is a lot of usefull info here. People here do seem very friendly and helpfull. Thank you for a great site.

Tanya
There is so much good that has come out of that group. There are some really nice people in it. But, so many people are afraid to say anything. They just set back and lurk for FEAR.....Then you say something and you get all these private eamils agreeing with you. But, no one will say anything... I told Bill the last time on the list that I didn't want to belong to a group that every discussion ended up in a fight.....I asked him to take me off the list...I couldn't figure out how to do it..He told me that I was cutting my nose off to spitt my face and I needed that group for My Rescue. So much good for the breed could be done if everyone would just agree to disagaree.......No one wants to be slammed or critized for having an opinion. Pretty soon you stop saying anything...... ..........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye.
I am on OES.ORG, OES-L and the Yahoo Sheepie group. I rarely log onto Yahoo. I read the OES-L regularly and do pick up info here and there but this is the BEST forum by far!

On OES.ORG, opinions can be expressed without upsetting the entire membership. There are "regulars" here but this group is not cliqueish (is that a word?). The format is simple and the chat room and photo upload features are fantastic. A lot of lasting friendships have emerged based on love of OES and genuine concern between members.

Thanks Ron, fabulous job. Don't ever leave us!!!

WE ALL LOVE RON :D
I love this site and all of you! I talk to you all of you more than friends and family. I don't know if that wrong, but I enjoy logging on multiple times a day. I guess I'm addicted!!! We all have our pooches in common so we have a bond right from the start. I've noticed that as I get older it is so difficult to make new friends and maintain old friendships when life keeps changing on us. XOXOXO
I read three: OES-l, Sheepie, and of course here :D

OES-l gets mostly deleted before read if I don't care for the subject.

Sheepie, I'm a moderator, so I have to read it, but it's almost dead now.

Here, I can read the threads I'm interested in.....which I appreciate.
I'm on a few lists and I must admit I am addicted to this one oes.org is there for EVERYONE. Everyone is so open and friendly, no one trying to promote themselves only!, as what happens on other lists! This forum is for EVERYONE. So many to help, so much information and everyone is so open and friendly & no one gets nasty!!. It is a great forum that is dedicated to the breed in every form, from health topics to rescue to just day to day lives of sheepies. Thank you Ron and I am so glad to of found this forum, I am enjoying it so much.
Hi all.
Well, yes, I have insomnia tonight and am catching up on lists.
I 'own or am owned" the OES list for Exhibitors and Breeders. It is either very volitile or extremely quiet. Seems to be with whatever is going on in the show world at the moment.

I used to belong to the OES-L, but haven't for about a year or so now. I belong to Sheepie List in digest form.

Ron, this is a great site. I promise to be more diligent in reading and being around........... make that my New Years Resolution!

Ali and the cast from Gwynedd OES :D
I am on OES.org and Yahoo Sheepie group. I only participate in OES.org cause it is for all sheepie lovers. I feel more comfortable here.

Great job Ron :D

P.S. Ron, my friends house is still up for sale on Pleasant street in Belmont (on the hill).
Ali I noticed you're on Showdogs List too... I joined a while back but have never posted on it. I think it is going to be good to learn from for show tips.

Ooooh! Are you suggesting an oes.org International Headquarters!

I might have to raise dues by 10% to be able to afford a Belmont Hill address... :(

Hi Stacey
Well, not exactly a time to ask me about that list. I am in the process of going either no mail or signing off of it for a while. Yes you can learn some great tips from it, but watch who you befriend on it as well.
Ali
Ya Ron, you could rename it Sheepie Hill. :D

My neighbor said that her daughter just spent (get this) $200,000.00 remodeling the kitchen before she moved. I've only seen pictures of the outside. The house and grounds are massive.
other forums: yes
other chats: chats are for dorks, no.
other lists: what's a list?

but not about sheepdogs.
Oes.org is the best place for sheepie lovers! Love this site and everyone on it. You are all awesome, and Ron, thank you so much for bringing us all together! You really do a great job with this place.
I've only been a member here for about a week, and I love it. I started to look for an OES forum because my best friend belongs to a few Border Collie forums and Dockdogs, and she has said wonderful things about the people there. That made me want to find a community of my own. This was the first forum and website that came up with my search and I looked around for a bit, and I think it's great. Thanks to Ron and all of the others out there!
Hello,
I have only been on this one- I am surfing over and seeing what else there is- any info/help for my critters- I will take!
I like how easy this one is- and I LOVE looking at all the pics... they just
make me smile

tks for such a great site!
