For a short time last year I tried a homemade diet for Abbi. They like home cooking and will get very demanding, but if they are gaining weight and do not need the extra weight, it is time to cut back. If you cannot cut back, try decreasing the fat content, then the protein content.
I fed Abbi one third protein, one third vegie, and one third rice. I tried brown rice, but it would go right through her, so I switched to white rice and oatmeal. I ended up making it about 20% protein, 30% vegie, and 50% rice and oatmeal or barley or some soy flour. She was a bit too loose on the 33% diet. Starch seems to make the stool more firm.

I ended up having to travel a bit. So I just added Nutro for adult large breeds to her diet until she was switched over. I still add half a can of peas to her Nutro every week. Kibble tends to constipate the poor thing. She over grooms and gets hair balls, so fiber is a must.

The easiest way was to take a 6 oz can of tuna, can of peas (I tried pumkin and green beans but Abbi wouldn't eat it), two cups of rice and 2 cups of oatmeal. I added table scraps that had no milk or eggs, onions, or lots of spices and deleted either the rice or some of the tuna depending on what the scraps were. Abbi cannot tolerate eggs, milk, onions, and some spices. If your dog can it will be easier.
You have to try things gradually and for a week or two before you know for sure if the combination is causing problems, which is why most people feed kibble. Nutro and Solid Gold, and even IAMS say they never use rendered meat. Iams has even said they do not use brain or stomach tissue that may have mad cows disease in it. I think Nutro and Solid Gold back their food like that also. Solid Gold states they use no preservatives. But I would have to drive 30 miles to buy Solid Gold. This is not practical to me.
Good Luck! By the way, I think the BARF folks have satelite sites with people who use cooked foods linked. I know I found some of those sites last year, but have since deleted the links.
