At what age did your OES turn gray?

Spike is only 9 months old and almost all his black fur is now gray! I really thought it would take longer before he grayed out. When did you all notice the hair changing colors?

(As an aside, does anyone know if the poster named Marley is still around somewhere lurking? Her doggy Mopsey is a relative of Spike's - same daddy for sure, I think a different mom though.)

Bosley is 6 months old today and he has grey hairs mixed in with the black. I brush him often and am always watching for them...kind of sad, I guess... another phase of puppyhood passsing as they grow..
Pepsi is now 20 months old and he is still mostly black with some grays mixed in and a dark gray undercoat. I was told some dogs don't turn fully gray until 2 years old.

Mojo will be nine months this week. He is almost all gray too. Our kids always grow up too fast.
There's a ton of difference in how fast they turn grey. I just saw 2 of Toby's littermates and they were all in varying stages of grey and coat change. Some of it's genetic, some of it's where you live, what food you feed. Maybe we can just will them to stay young and not turn grey.
Marley's pup Mopsey turned grey early too I think... it depends on the dog, Dancer began changing color early, but Sky is 16 months old and still has puppy black on most of her back.
Mallory is 4 1/2 months old and her tail is all grey now and the backs of her hocks are grey, her blk is lightening it's not as dark as it was a month ago when we adoted her.
At 6 months, I think all of yuki's legs were gray. the more and more I comb, the more gray i see at the roots. ...now almost 11 months, her body is mostly black, but 1/4th of all those roots are gray.
at 8 months Tuc is totally grey, has been for a while now, yet bogey at 3 years, still has a lot of black mixed with his grey
I'm bummed it's changed so quickly. I was hoping he'd stay black and white at least until 1 year of age.

I understand that staying black and white permanently is not favorable in show terms, but does turning gray indicate better blood lines or worse lines in a sheepdog? Or really, does it not make any difference as long as they change at some point? I'm just curious. Thanks for all your responses!
I havent posted earlier because Im so embarressed that I dont remember when Panda turned...I know it was before a year old...but not exact....it was after 6 months though, 'cause I looked at her 6 month old pics and she was still black....bad momma...
The shorter Merlin is clipped the more grey he looks. When he was shaved he was all grey, now that his coat is growing in there is more black growing in and he is 2 1/2. Avalon is almost 7 months old and she looks black, but it is lighter than the puppy black ,underneath it is all grey.
Hi RollrXGirl, Is Spike totally gray now? or is it kind of mixed? Max is also graying at 9 mos. His one ear looks totally gray. His body, though, is not totally gray, but definitely changing over. The top of his back has black but then it is more gray toned towards his stomach. I guess our boys are growing up!!

We adopted Barney when he was 6 months old and we don't have any pictures of him when he was younger, but he was totally grey by the time we got him. He has since gotten even lighter, but he was definitely grey at that point...
At a year old, Clyde still has puppy hair on the top of his saddle and has turned progressively grey underneath. When you look at him, he almost looks like he has merle markings but it's just the grey underneath showing through the darker far on top. The back of his legs are mostly grey with dark hair mixed and he's always had the whitewalls on the inside. I always think he looks really black-- until I look at puppy pictures and remember what black really looks like! I really love the way he looks right now though, it's hard to imagine what he'll look like grey!

He's not totally gray but the majority of the black on his body has now turned to a darkish gray and the only black is on his ears still. I have heard of them going through stages with the colorations lightening and darkening, I'm kinda hoping he'll darken back out before he turns totally light gray!!
Winston will be 8 months next tuesday and he has greyed so much. Really apparent after his first hair cut. He has white paws and then really light grey on his legs darkening as it goes up to the rest of his body. I can't really tell you when it started, all I can say is I have noticed it for about a month now at least.
