Food of choice

I read everything in the medical posts but I have a question. I think Flannigan is not doing well on his food. He is losing hair on his back and is itching really bad, this has been a on going proublem. Somewhere in the forum I read about dogs who can't eat dog food with corn or corn meal.
So I have been looking into this. Flannigan is not a OES he is golden retreiver/ cocker span. We have gone through this before with the vet.
like maaybe 8 times. There are many dog foods out there. The best I found is wellness. but very pricey. Fergies breeder told me to try Pro Plan lamb and rice. I also have seen Nutro.

What would you guys buy or try????

Thanks for any help. Deana

Hi Deana,

Try Canidae or California Natural.

Bogart is doing great on Canidae, its about the same
cost as Nutro (the first food we had him on).
It is a higher quality product.

California Natural is also a good quality food, they
make a Lamb and Rice formula too.

Good luck!
Deana,
My German Shepherd has allergies. He was so itchy he used to chew holes in his body... YUCK!
We tried everything. He absolutely would not touch IAMS or Science Diet.
All my dogs are on Authority Adult Large Breed Chicken, They were on Authority Lamb & Rice which is wonderful but I switched to the Chicken because it's exclusive made for larger dogs and has Glucosamin & Chondrontin in it for healthy joints. Authority is PetSmart's Premium Dog Food

Tasker had TERRRIBLE allergies when he was younger. He could only eat Pro plan Lamb and rice for years and years. It is certainly worth trying that or another of the different Zahara suggested. The itching is a sure sign. Does he chew his feet? Another sure sign. Tasker out grew his allergies but I'm not sure when, we only discovered when Ty came this year that he could eat other dog food.
If you go to any pet supply store and ask them which brands they would recommend with no corn ingredients there are lots to choose from.
I would be careful assuming it is allergies though, it may be a thyroid condition as well, which is very easy to test for, and easy to treat as well if that's what it is.
I have begun feeding lamb and rice to all. At first it was totally Nutro, but on the suggestion of the PetsMart people, I switched over to Authority. Now two of my dogs won't touch their food. So even switching from one lamb and rice to another can cause problems. Thanks for the tip re: the Authority chicken

Sheepieboss,
Since Pepsi has such a sensitive stomach I was sure he would have problems when switching from Authority's Lamb & Rice to the Chicken, but he had no problems at all. Pepsi has stomach problems even if all I do is give him a dog treat, so I was really expecting so kind of reaction. He had none.
All the Dogs seem to love the Chicken Formula just as much as the Lamb & Rice. They say it's for Large Breed Dogs, but when I asked about that they said the only difference was the Glucomasine & Chondrontin. So Peanut could eat it with no problems which was good. Also I wouldn't have to worry about trying to get the dogs to swallow some pills. They would get it right through the food and hopefully prevent problems for both Harley & Pepsi or at least make them less severe.

Do they not like the Authority? Are they having problems with it?
I know you are supposed to gradually switch foods.
I didn't when switching from the Lamb & Rice to the Chicken luckily no tummy problems
I rushed the switch over but figured lamb and rice, who cares? They do. I'd start all over again except Jack, but big fluffernutter, has a tender tummy and is the reason I've gone to lamb meals.
I think it was Tyler (TylersMom) who had the corn allergy. I don't remember what food he's on now though.
While we're on the food subject, has anyone tried the Paul Newman Organic stuff? I saw it in a catalog but never in stores-- at least around here.
I am just switching the boys to Natural Life it is totally hypo-allergenic. They just came out with a Venison Meal & Rice that is guaranteed to alleviate food allergies! I like the Venison formula because there is less of a chance of chemicals than the more popular meats...for now. The boys really love it too! :D I get it from my local health food store, I'm not sure if it is available at Petsmart but I'm sure they would get it in for you. :D
have not seen that here in the north east. is just in your area?
It is made in the USA...here is there website http://www.nlpp.com

I'm sure it is available to you...if I can get it here...LOL
thanks so much, I will go to petsmart tomarrow. Good tip
