Brewers Yeast for Dogs Coat

Hello,

My vet suggested we give Hendrix Brewers Yeast vitamins for his coat. He's had some scabs on his coat and he's irritaed them by scratching and biting at them. We've been giving them to him daily for about a week now and you're supposed to give him 1 for every 10lbs. He's 70lbs now, so we've been giving him 7 of them a day. Ray thinks he may be constipated, could this be a side effect of them? Anyone know?

I have always given Tyler Brewers Yeast with his food. The thing to remember is that Brewers Yeast is a B Vitamin and so it is washed out during the course of the day. So if you are going to give him 7 pills a day, spread them out through out the day. I only give Tyler two pills per day in the morning with his food.

The other thing you might want to look at is his food. Make sure there is no corn meal in it. Dogs can be allergic to corn and it will cause skin issues. Tyler had hot spots every year until I changed his food that contained no corn meal. Huge difference right away.

As far as making him constipated, I don't know. I do know that Tyler has very dry stool and always has, could it be from the brewers yeast, good question.

Good luck
So you've just been giving him 2 a day instead of the 1 pill for every 10 lbs? We'll start spacing out his consumption of it. We literally just started giving it to him a week ago, but as treats.

Thanks for your help!
Hey, the treat thing works, I know I can bribe Kiera into doing many things with a Brewers Yeast Tab... who would have guessed... but then she is a bit of a pig and will eat anything, and I mean ANYTHING, YUCK! Tyler on the other hand is not easily bribed with food. He would rather be loved on and pet or a good belly rub. I never heard about the 10 to one ratio thing. I started giving him brewers yeast, vitamin E and Omege 3 oil when we got him eight years ago. We have since added the joint stuff, MSM, and vitamin C to his daily ritual. Kiera gets all but the joint stuf at this point, but I think at her next birthday, I will start her on it too. She will be seven.

Let me know how it works for his skin, it is the same reason we started Tyler on Brewers Yeast and the Vitamin E. I can't even remember why we did the omega 3 oils.... But our Vet was very impressed with my choices of supplements, he said that when ever Tyler would have to take antibiotics, they would work better with because of what I was supplementing him with.
