When is a puppy a dog?

I was just wondering, is there a set age when puppies are no longer considered puppies but are officially dogs?
I know I drove my family nuts by calling Maggie puppy for at least the first 8 years of her life (she is now 8 and 2 months!)...

that's a good guestion. maybe a year? never thought of it.
I too call flannigan puppy, he's 9 LOL
I think the correct answer is 1 year, but sheepies are always puppies in my book. Ever notice how everyone loves a puppy, no matter what kind. But after other dogs grow up, it's like "there's a dog, so what." But it's different with sheepies. Everyone's like......awwwwwww...look at that puppy, even at 100 pounds.
I think at between eighteen months and thirty months, depending on maturity and breed. I think of it this way. I child is a child until he becomes and adult, I know another question, but follow me for a moment. So if a dog ages at about 7 years to our one-year, so in their second year you are dealing with a teenager, and after a teenager they become an adult thus become a dog. That is my humble opinion on this subject....

Uh oh! If we are going to judge Barney by maturity...
He'd be a puppy for a long, long time!
Some dork today says to me, Sheepdogs ehe? Those are really dumb aren't they? I looked at him and decided he wasn't bright enough to tell him about Feggie swinging by herself or Einstien pulling the chair over to the counter to get the milkbones.... So I said, yeah, I guess not. He just wasn't worth it. I know that they can be the biggest clowns in the world, but it doesn't mean that they aren't smart. They are a working breed after all, not breed just to be some cute little thing.
Sky is still very immature in personality, behavior etc... she is almost 16 months but hasn't had her first heat cycle yet so that may have a lot to do with it. Dancer really semed to mature after her first heat at 11 months old.
As for oes being smart/ dumb.... they ARE ranked only number 63 out of the top 100 breeds for intelligence. LOL Dancer is an extremely smart dog though, but Sky is dumb as a box of rocks. LOL Not super stupid, but definitely not bright, just dumb in her own sweet way. LOL
That's funny Stacey, to have 2 such different 'mental abilities' of your dogs. Barney is a lot smarter than Maggie...which also makes him more dangerous! (not in a bad way...just in a sneaky way!)
Yeah, I never go around saying "we've got the smartest dog" when someone is intrigued by the breed. I too have come across several intelligence charts, along with "Trainability" rankings and agree with them. I also say Yuki is retarded/not too bright/ and roll my eyes when my husband denies it (he thinks she's so smart but he's really just being a good daddy and saying that). I still know that's a brave thing to say on a board of OES fanatics, but it's how I feel. As I've mentioned, I've trained dogs before at my old location and can easily tell how other breeds (as a whole.......not one particular dog of a breed that was smarter than the norm..) "pick it up faster" ................or are more "sneaky" and "Quick" about ignoring the commands because they're bored and want something more difficult. I by no means really think OES' are dumb. I think they're VERY smart and it's amazing all that they can do... I just don't think their comparable to many popular breeds that are known for their ease in training/understanding. I would say OES' make it up in the emotional/affectionate department.
My mom always says Bunker shoupd have been a blond. She looks good but nothing in between the ears. Unless there is food invloved.

number 63 thats not bad  There must be 62 dummer dogs

Just out of interest which dog came last

normally, it's the Afghan. Several tests vary by 1 or 2. ex: Like one of them may list Border Collie as 1. and the next as #2 smartest.
Maybe they consider them dumb because they have a way of doing what THEY want and not what we want........Bogey has figured out how to open windows, open the dog gate by using the squeeze handle, and take the caps off coke bottles so he can get that last little drop out of them. Tuc on the other hand, is smart enough to let bogey do all the dirty work and reap the rewards with him lmao
That is what many people say about the Afghan (known as the cat dog), but when reading how intelligence tests are done, time and time again... other breeds just pick things up "FASTER," "Easier" (after seeing it once), and most importantly with more "consistency." Many dogs know how to learn tricks, but if given the command it may take saying it more than once (or a treat) to get them to actually DO IT. Not PRIMARILY because they are being stubborn, but because it takes more time for them to process it. As an animal who is known to please their owners or alpha, they naturally want to do what they understand (grasp).
Wait a minuit talking of dumb :( "62 dummer dogs" You were all just too polite to point out my mistake I guess  It should have read 37 dumber dogs

Bellatrix figured out how to open the windows by three months of age. I would put something in the track and she would take it out open the window and be in the backyard and half over the fence before i could start the car to go to work.
Unfortunately the windows we have now she can't open so she went through it this morning. Thankfully she wasn't hurt very bad but still needed stitches. She comes home tommorow. The house is too quiet right now.

Ouch! I hope she has a speedy recovering!

Happens to Chumley all the time -- people always ask if she's a puppy and seem genuinely surprised when I say she's 8 1/2 years old. She's just so cheerful and bouncy that people assume she's much younger. She's very childlike.
Yup, I called Bart my puppy until the day he left us! Same with Raggy who lived to be almost 15! So I think I would agree that OES's are always puppies to me!

Mind you, when people ask how old The Gooch is and I tell them he's not a year yet, they are astounded! 8O "He's still a puppy" I say and they just look shocked! Then they ask if he is finished growing and I always say that I hope so! He is a BIG PUPPY! LOL!
There is a difference between types of intelligience too. A Labrador might do sit and down and stay when you tell them too but they will also jump off a cliff if you give the right command.
The way it was explained to me is that OES want to know why you want them to do something before they actually do it. There needs to be purpose to their actions not just to please you. I know the obedience people said they don't do well at the long downs and sit stays because they get really bored. (Like a genius with ADHD.) They do however excel at things that make them think, if given the right motivation.

It's the difference between smart and intelligient.
Mandy, that's the look Bentley gives me when I ask him to sit at random intervals - "And why EXACTLY is it important for me to sit at this point in time?"

I swear he rolls his eyes at me sometimes.
Wait til he starts huffing at you when you want him to move!
Oes are very smart. Why else would bella and bubba HAVE to smell everything I give the before they eat it. Even if the second bite it the same as the first. They know when there are meds in the food.
OES dumb? They managed to get over 1000 people on this forum devoting lots of time talking about them
LMAO!!!!!!
