Fostering long distance? (Katrina relief)

Has anyone ever considered fostering a pet that would have to be shipped to them? How exactly might this work? I was contacted by an organization looking for fosters (I had signed up on PetFinder initially) for the Katrina disaster. They are looking for people willing to foster animals out of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi because the shelters are getting overwhelmed there. I'd be happy to help out but there's a part of me that does not quite grasp how this works- they ship me the animal and then what? How does the rightful owner ever get their pet back and what guarantee is there that I won't end up the new permanent owner of this abandoned animal because no one wants to spend the money to ship the animal back? It's all new to me so if any of you have any experience with something like this, please post your story.

Also, if anyone in CA is interested in becoming a part of this rescue effort, please PM or email me and I'll be happy to pass along the information I was given. Hopefully the woman who sent the email out to me will answer some of the above questions, but I'm still perplexed as to how this can work.

I would HOPE that they would keep a record of where the pet was originally found, the owner listed on the tag (if known) and where they sent the pet to be fostered, so that the rightful owner could reclaim the pet when they're safely relocated... But honestly, you'd almost have to ask the organization requesting the fostering what their plan is if any to get the pet back to their owner... There are so many rescue operations down there right now, I'm willing to bet that each of them has a different plan for how to handle the pet situation. Since there isn't really a central organzing force behind the effort, its really up in the air. I personally would get in touch with whomever contacted you and ask them what the plans are for reunification of the pet, and what happens if it is a permanent owner surrender, or if the owner is never located.

Let us know what you find out- I'm sure it would help anyone considering fostering these guys to know what the organizations are planning on doing to reunite the pets with their owners!
There are about 1000 Babies in Gonzales. LA now......It is a facility set up for Horse Shows......All of the orgs are registering, vet checking all of them.Slow process......... Some of the Breed Clubs have gotten some of their out to their facilities and foster homes...... I have talked to several people down there and people that have been there and there is a lot of confusion going on........I am going to call the Goverenor this morning about lifting the regulations on releasing them..... They have to go to legimate rescues......They will have to spayed and neutered..... I think the main thing is to keep them for a certain time { 4-6 months} until their owners can get them back.....Not to just get htem and start adopting them out.........I have 6 here that the owners wanted to give them up not knowing what their furture was...... I promised them I would find them good homes......But, these were people that got out with their pets before Katrina....... So that is a differnt deal........ But, the main thing is foster homes to taek care of these Babies until the owners can get them back.......Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue
Kaye- Have you heard anything about the tracking systems that are or are not in place for all those pets?
I have heard that they are microchipping all of the Babies that are going out.....It is such a HUGE endeavor!!!!! It is finding a place for these Babies that will foster them for awhile.......There are differnent Govermental Agencies involved..There are many HUGH Rescue Orgs involved......This makes for a Logistal Nightmare........Some of the shlters in Louisiana that are holding hundreds of Babies don't have the authority to release them yet.........It is getting everyone on the same page.......Who is SUFFERING???? The Babies....I don't care who got out first and who didn't.I don't care WHO'S FAULT all this is....... The Babies didn't get TO MAKE A DECISION!!!!!!!! THEY NEVER DO!!!!!!! I am thru venting for now........Kaye Second Chance

Hi Erika,
This has the latest info. on animals coming to LAX this week (Thursday).
This was already being organized & I found out through my e-mail this
morning when someone gave me this information.
There have been A LOT of people responding (to me), so I don't necessarily
think they are short on people, they are probably having a harder time
organizing & sorting all of the responses.
I have talked to one of the rescue organizers & they are trying as hard as they can to get back to everyone. I am going to try
and organize a group to go to L.A. Thurs. from Santa Barbara and do whatever
we can to help.
I know they can use plenty of volunteers to walk, sooth, and feed & water the dogs once they get to L.A. Then they will try to place the dogs with all of the people offering foster care. I'm not sure what the solution is when/if the owner is found, but I'm sure they have something in mind. I'd say it is a good possibility that you could end up with a permanent pet; but we certainly hope that plenty of them can be reunited.

Here is more info. that has come to me during the day:

Good Morning Everyone!

We are 99% confirmed that a flight will be coming to LAX on Thursday of this
week. Not confirmed as yet but please hold the day for the new arrivals!!

All rescues must be at the Centinela Pet & Feed wharehouse in Torrance. We
will update you once we get confirmation of the flight day and time. The
address so you can prepare your troops is 2727 Maricopa, Torrance, CA 90503.
Off the 405 South, exit Crenshaw, take a right on Maricopa and it is behind
the Exxon Refinery.

Please plan to have experienced volunteers accompany you to pick up your
dogs.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING - Collars, leashes, crates, dog bowls for food and
water.

We have a tremendous amount of folks coming forward with interest in
fostering. Lisa Lee of Underdog Rescue has begun telephone screenings. By
tomorrow we anticipate sending rescues a list of potential fosters who live
in your area of the city.

***There is a possibility as of now that these dogs will be from the Houston
Shelter and therefore adoptable immediately. They may change plans in the
south and empty the Houston shelter - which has a couple of thousand dogs -
to make room for the Louisiana dogs. This way, they will be closer to the
owners and easier to get them back into their hands. But, that is just what
I have heard and the news changes by the moment.
