Wet Beard

Our OES is 18months old now but has yet to learn how to properly drink from the water bowl. He insists on sinking as much of his face as he can into the bowl and when he comes out, there's nothing short of a flood of water on the floor. I have tried a shallow bowl with a reservoir to no avail. My parent's OES learned after a year and now makes very little mess.
Any other ideas?

Unless he's a show dog, you could trim his face? Otherwise, perhaps get him a wider bowl with a flat bottom so that he can have enough water in it but the water is only an inch deep. You just might have to refill it more often.
And by the way, Welcome to the forum :)
They sell those bowls that have a smaller hole in the middle that prevents the dog from getting his whole head in there. I've never tried one but I don't have a diver!

Check it out:The Water Hole Bowl
I cant comment on your problem...Panda doesnt slobber all over, but I do have to say that your avatar is very very cute!!
Welcome! I share your pain. Bailey enjoys scuba diving in his water bowl too. We recently bought a heavy, deep bowl and only fill it half way, this seems to have helped a lot. Now we get water on the floor but it isn't Lake Bailey the way it used to be. But, if he goes outside and uses the old stainless steel bowl he still sticks his whole head in - maybe because it's wider.
Welcome. Had the same problem. My solution was to just get use to it. They loved to dive in, soak for a few and then find me to use my legs as a napkin! You think maybe that was a sign of dominance?

Good luck, and the avatar is adorable!!!
Welcome to the forum! Your avatar is just heaven!

Murphy also gets very wet when drinking water! He takes a big, slobbery drink then runs towards me with a waterfall still dripping from him for a cuddle! 8O I'll be watching this post closely!

The Gooch just drools! 8O
Welcome to the forum! I echo the others in saying that your Avatar photo is wonderful!

As for the messy drinker problem, I think Willowsprite's suggestion of a wide shallow bowl is a good idea. One of mine is a messy drinker, too. My best solution so far is to not use a bowl. I bought one of those water bottles to be attached to her crate for when she's inside. She just goes into her crate for a drink. If she's outside, they make a similar item to attach to your water spigot. It's kind of like drinking from the end of the hose. She loves the fresh water and there's no mess. :D
Welcome to the forum! And I agree - your avatar is just precious!!!

Drez is a sloppy drinker, too. She's 12, so I don't think there's any way we can change her now!! Doesn't stick her nose it in, but she laps very sloppily, so that when she's done, her whole face is dripping. Towels at the ready!!

Chris
yup trousers are einsteins fav napkin too

he likes to drink then go digging then use your leg so not only do we get water we get mud too

particulary when your about to go out
All good suggestions. Just wanted to comment, our #2 sheepie was a pearl diver too.....plus she's blow bubbles. Gotta love 'em.
Thanks to all who replied. We have ordered the bowl but as someone else said, the towels will always be at the ready!!!

Do they get enough water that way? I picture it coming out a drop at a time and it taking a long time. Just wondering!
In the meantime, (before the bowl comes)... I do what a lot of other people here do and that's only feel the bowl up a LITTLE at a time. I mean... barely 1/4th of the way (though 1/4 in our HUGE bowl is more than 1 cup).

I'm right behind her every time she drinks water to corner her for a rub down with a towel. Yes, every time. It's really not that bad.

Then I refill her bowl. I guess it's easy for me since the bowl is next to the refrigerator.

good luck.

Actually, it flows better than I thought it would. It does take a little longer than gulping it down from the bowl, though. She took to it immediately, though, because she liked drinking from the faucets.
My Abigail is very protected of her toys and will horde over them. Sometimes, if you walk by her she will snap at you. Any suggesions on how to stop this?
My six month old Dudley has the same problem. He's our third OES and our other two were never as slobbery. We just thought Dudley was special !
Try a disposable ziploc container with a small hole cut out of the lid big enough for the dogs tongue only. This solved the problem with my dog. The container has to be refilled when it is half empty or they can't reach the water.. :D

omg I got one of those for tuc when we travel, water goes everywhere! down his face, all over anyone standing within 5 ft of him lol, but i think its just him....
Frank does the same thing and his beard is constantly wet except for first thing in the morning. I always have a towel handy and if I see him drink he gets his faced dried up immediately afterwards. I did buy one of those donut hole bowls and it did work but they don't have a big size which would mean I would need to fill it like 800 x's a day. Plus it's kind of a pain to dump and refill. I ended up giving it to my neighbor for her Min Pin and he proceeded to chew the bowl up and destroy it.
wet beards are something you must get used to in some cases . Bobby used to have one every time i would have to be there with a towel and sometimes a mop . its a little price to pay for having the best companion that you could have. i would give anything to have that back.
I'm posting in response to the person who questioned how much water a dog could get out of a bottle. I haven't tried it yet but it sounds like a great solution. My dog is so sloppy while drinking water, I don't believe she is very efficient. She may appear to drink a lot of water however the majority of it ends up on the floor. I don't think a bottle would inhibit her water consumption whatsoever. :?
tyr a raised bowl it help for derby
Our little boy came home sticking his paws and whole face into the bowl, often knocking it over. We bought a larger, heavier ceramic bowl, and then sat with treats (well, just his food, but he was too little to know the difference) rewarding him for drinking the right way. Since that night he's only played in small water bowls that he uses when we're visiting friends.
yep, Chopin loves to soak me with his water, he doesn't even want to drink it most of the time, just play in the water. I've grown accustumed to getting wet while calling him captain wet beard--maybe I'll try the shallow bowl thing but I think I would grow to miss my extra daily washing and he may miss showering me with his water, lol-- good luck to you though
I think the donut hole bowl is a great idea, but I hate
to use plastic anything for their food or drink...plus we have four dogs, so itwould have to be much larger-and heavier-at least the base of it.
I feel you pain. I have tried to get Rheba to drink like a little girl although she insists on filling her mouth with water then dropping the mouthfull all over the tile!
I would love to know of a solution, but I don't think there's a sure solution for all sheepies!
Blue loves his water and today nice and sloppy, Dave snoring on the couch Blue paddles up to him big kiss and slurp and wet beard. Now that woke him up. Gotta love those beards.
