FEMA petition

FEMA is now taking a national petition to see how many Americans want to allow hurricane survivors to be allowed to take their pets with them as they evacuate or pet rescue agencies to be allowed to come into ravaged areas and rescue pets. The number is 1-202-646-2763.

I guess I'll have to try again. I called the number but it just rang for about two minutes and then stopped. No answer, no machine, nothing. :(
A national petition for this is not only a waste of time, but is stupid. All life is worthy of being rescued. A pet is a family member, worthy of being treated as such. Unfortunately, there may be some that have not only lost all their possessions, but their family as well, but somehow they and the pet escaped death. Can you really ask that person to give that up as well?
Why would you not want to allow animal rescuer's to try to save the pets? They may stumble upon the life of a person through the bark or cries of a pet that someone else may have missed.
I hope this is not for real, and I hope if it is, that they don't take the time to count the votes before making the decision to rescue any of God's creation, whether it be animal or human.
With all that's been lost, and the loss yet to come, how can anyone intentionally leave behind anything that has life left within it? What are we teaching our children and grandchildren about the value of life?
And finally, we train dogs to rescue people, to find the bodies of the dead, but yet, when they need rescued, how dare we question whether it's right or wrong? JMPO

EXACTLY! I cannot believe that this is even up for debate! These poor people have only a dog or cat left to hold on to, and it just is a no brainer! :(

I don't have upright children, just my dogs and cats and have thought a lot over the past while as to what I would do in this situation and they would have to euthanize me too before I would leave my babies!
Do you think I put this petition up to have people to question whether animals should be left behind? This is sickening facts right now, that there are people questioning this. I have 2 children, and I have pets, a lot of them, I wouldn't leave any of them behind. In a perfect world this wouldn't be up for debate, but I would hope that some of us would call and make our voices heard that these animals are important too. It is important to these people to protect their pets and also be comforted by them in this time of crisis for them.
I apologize to all who I offended by posting this petition, but I strongly believe that voices of animal lovers should be heard.

Stormi and co.
Stormi, I don't think mouthypf meant she thought it was stupid to post it, but is angry that it is being debated at all. As are we all. There should be no question that these loyal, loving family members with fur and four legs should be rescued along with their two legged companions.
We are all Animal Lovers on this forum.....We all Love Our Babies. We can't even comprehend how anyone could go and leave their Babies at home..... I think Best Friends and other Rescues were more prepared to go in and save critters then the Officals were to save People. But, In this Nation where a Pet is considered a possession and has NO RIGHTS...... is Surprising this would happen???????? Maybe some GOOD will come out of this.......I Hope and Pray that it does... I think everyone needs to do everything they can to help.It doesn't make any difference what it is......Signing a Petition....Donating Money.....Getting in the trenches....... I feel so much frustration that I can't actually go and help........ There is No Right Way To Help........Just Help........ " A Nation Will Be Judged By The Way It Treats It's Animals" Gandi

Stormi,
I am so sorry you misunderstood my post. It wasn't directed at you or your post. :!: :!: :(

Your post was in responce of the many animals needing a voice for their plea for help! Mine was out of disgust, disgust that the issue is even being questioned by anybody.

I apologize to you, and the forum for allowing my disgust and anger over the situation to distract from your post of good will. It was not my intent.
I would love to sign this pittition all animals should be rescued it is so sad that people have been made to choose to get food and shelter over there pets.
SIGN THE PETITION, then pass it along to your animal loving friends,

Boy, this is a hot topic!

I'm glad this is taken into consideration, as I read on the news that people refused to leave their homes because the rescue people requested they left their pets behind (I would've stayed too!) and in some cases, they had to sacrifice the animals in order to rescue the people. Our pets are members of our families and they deserve to be given the same chance of being rescued as we do.
Is the FEMA petition asking if people would want to have shelters that allow animals as well as people? And, are they referring to before/during/after the storm/disaster?

I'm with everyone with the 'all pets should have a chance to be rescued' train of thought; however, I also can see the other side...can you imagine the superdome with all those people, plus their pets? As we all saw on tv the situation at the superdome was horrible and unsanitary and I can't imagine it with the addition of animals, some of whom might not be trained very well or at all and also might be perfectly friendly to their family but hostile near others or other pets.

I think there should be a place where people could evacuate to with their pets and I certainly think that rescue groups should be allowed to go into areas to look for and save pets, but also, when those helicopters came and took the stranded people from their roofs, what if there were 2 people and a dog on the roof, but only room for 2 of the three? Would you say leave the person? Or, would it be fair to neighboring survivors to save tiny Fluffy but not be able to save giant Barney?

I know many of these people have lost everything and might only have their pet left, but would you feel fine knowing that having saved your dog might have stopped another human from being saved? I hope I'm not sounding heartless but with the obvious mismanagement of that disaster it was all they could do afterwards to go in and look for human survivors. Being so ill-prepared hardly allowed them accomodations for pets on a large scale. I'd say in a perfect world by all means save all the pets, but in a realistic one, I'd have to choose humans first.
