Incontinence

Hi,
I do not have an OES but I have been frantically surfing the web for advice on incontinence in my 4 year old Lab. and yours was the only site I could find so I hope you do not mind the intrusion!
We suddenly noticed that Holly was frequently but not always, leaving puddles behind her when she got up from lying down. However, she is not wetting her bed at night. Our Vet has told us that she has become incontinent but did not say it was probably as a result of Spaying her two years ago. He has put her on Propalin Syrup at a rate of 0.6ml 3X a day for a week then reducing it to 2X a day. Holly had her first dose this morning and I noticed that she was breathing quite fast. Has anyone else noticed this with this drug or any other undesirable side effects. Also has anyone had there dog on it for any real length of time. Our Vet has mentioned Hormones but was reluctant to give them to her - She is Atopic - or Surgery to tighten the Sphincter:(

Is this the only medical history that your dog has? Have you checked the net for side effects of this drug? If your dog is having a change in breathing or pulse rate she needs to be monitored quite closely and I would seek your vets advice before giving her another dose of that medication. If a first dose is causing her to change her breathing pattern a second dose could cause an increasingly worse effect. (These things always seem to happen on weekends and holidays, we know! Definitely see if your vet has an after hours number for these types of events or see if you can get a reccommendation from another vet, even though they haven't seen her.)

One of my friends has a female Lab with the same problem. She was put on hormones and has had virtually no problems since then.

I know that there are some other posts about incontinence after spaying around here. If you use the search tool you should be able to pull them up.

Good luck and let us know how things are going.
I know this is quite common in female oes, and occurs in many other breeds as well. It is a result of spaying, they have lost the ability to produce the hormones needed to keep those muscles fit. Propalin is the only treatment I've heard of that works. If you're dog seems to be having a reaction I would stop giving it to her until you can get her back in to see your vet. Another option is to buy puppy pads and lay those under her when she is sleeping, if she is crated that will make it easier.
Good luck! :)
Hi,
thank you to those who replied to my query. Holly is now on Incurin which is a Hormone replacement therapy and we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will work. The Vet thought that the Propalin had increased her heart rate but appaarently this can be overcome by gradually increasing the dose. We were not prepared to take the risk, however, hence the hormones.
That's good news Jeanette! Keep us posted, I'm really glad to hear she's doing better! :D
