What a night! Power restored after Hurricane Katrina, all ok

Hey everyone. We just got power back after losing it about 6 pm last night. Things here are pretty bad - my neighbor has a tree sitting on her house - it took the sidewalk with it.

Us - I can't call anywhere but locally. I have no idea how my parents are. I decided to stay home, and Jason has left to help FEMA with the guard. Our roof started leaking last night, so I've got to find some way to get to the store and buy tarps for it (Jason has the van....).

Last night was one of the worst nights I've been through - all you could hear last night was trees popping and the winds blowing. We have about a dozen pine trees and several pecan trees right behind our house - I was scared to death. I just knew the trees were going to fall on the house. I jumped at every popping sound. We did lose all our peach and apple trees, but they're in the side yard. I hated not knowing what was going on - very scary feeling.

We're okay though. I've been at my neighbor's house most of the morning trying to help them out. The base got some extensive damage also - Jason was paged to go there at 4:30 this morning so he left to go to his civil service job then. Around 10ish, he got called to go down to his guard base so he could go help FEMA out. I know he's just exhausted - we didn't really sleep last night because of the winds/poppng & not only that but it was HOT!

I don't know how things are elsewhere, but I know our little town got a bit of damage just on my street. I looked at pics of the coast, and I am just heartbroken. All my prayers go to them. It's just unreal.

Here's a pic of our neighbor's house. We were very fortunate.

I am happy to hear that you made it through the night. I thought about you when I saw where this thing was headed. We got some really bad wind at our house, with minimal tree damage. Sorry to say, that some of our neighboring counties and states did not fair so well.

It is just horrible to see the stories of what has happened in the Biloxi area. I heard earlier today that they were telling rescue workers to leave those that they knew were dead and continue to search for the living. I can't imagine how that would make me feel as a rescue worker.
Wow, that picture speak of just the outlaying areas...I am so sorry for your neighbor...at least everyone is okay...glad you made it through the night safe and sound....my thoughts are with you!
So glad to hear you're doing well, Gail! I thought about you and Betsy both last night...just wondering how you were faring the storm.

It's awful some of the things I've seen on the news. Thank God you're both safe!!
Gail--I'm glad you're okay!
It's horrible going through a storm like that, especially when the power has gone out so you have no idea what is happening. When Hurricane Isabel came through VA in 9/2003 it was bad b/c we lost power for a week, and we had no idea what was going on with anything. We had one small radio and it kept telling us to tune to channel X on tv for more info, well, not easy to do without power! And then Gaston came through last year and we lost power for another week. I wish there was a way to keep power through those situations.
Thank goodness your trees ended up in your yard rather than your house.
Glad you're all doing okay.
Gail, I also am glad you and hubby are ok. Houses can be fixed.

My daughter is in Mobile Al. Would you beleave her house is ok. It is brick.
Most of the area is without power too. Hers is the only house on the street that has power. Funny or what. She has a large freezer so everyone is bringing their food to her to keep. I guess because when she built last year she was the last lot. It had been empty for a while She is on a different grid. Even her salon is ok. But no power there.
God was watching over her.

ditto - glad everything is ok. and i hope the people in Louisiana right now is ok too. :(
That sounds terrifying. I'm so glad you are ok. Do you need someone to make a call to your parents for you? I'd be happy to do it. . .
Gail, SO glad to hear you are all well. I can't imagine how scary it must have been for you to hear all the sounds but not know what was happening.

The Northeast may have its share of bad winters, but I think I'm staying put!

Chris
It's so good to hear you are all doing OK!

Glad you're ok Gail.... :)
Glad you and your family are safe, Gail!
Here's a 20 minute video of the storm damage on the coast. http://www.wlbt.com/

WLBT is a station out of Jackson, MS. They sent their helicopter down there to get a view of the damage. I've been to the coast SOOOOO many times in my life, and I don't recognize anything. I'm just awe-struck...

Jason talked to the head of CE at Keesler, and he said most of the buildings that survived Camille are gone & that most of the buildings on Keesler are destroyed. :(
Gail,

We are glad to hear you are okay! There are so many heartbreaking stories coming out of there right now. It is just awful!

Good Luck with everything!

Eric
My parents got through on their cell phone, finally. They still don't have power there, but they are okay! What a relief to know for sure. :)

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. We were pretty fortunate up here - crazy we got so much damage as far inland as we are though. I'm just still in awe of that video - it breaks my heart. I spent plenty of time at Keesler when hubby was in tech school there, and it's almost like the first place we lived (He was there for 1 yr after we got married & stayed here since I was a student at MSU). I went down there just about every weekend & every break we had... It's sad to see it so destroyed.
JacobandBrandonsmom, So glad to hear you and your family are safe!!!

The feeling of leaving behind the dead would indeed be horrible, but the overwhelming feeling of a successful rescue afterwards, I hope would lessen that burden. I'm sure they get some type of ID, if possible, before leaving them.
Gail and Betsy...I'm so glad to hear you and your families all are ok.
You have been in our thoughts here.
Hugs,
Gail,
I am happy to hear you and your family are ok...
