Dogs at the Beach

Just curious...

I know several members live at or near beaches and others have taken their dogs with them on vacation....what do you take with you to keep their coats maintained?

I'm taking Beau & Gen to the beach in a few weeks and got to thinking about all their "stuff". I'll need their crates, bowls, food, treats, toys and some grooming equipment. If I keep packing their stuff, there'll be no room for me!

Am I over-thinking this and acting like the parents of a newborn - travelling with everything but the kitchen sink? 8)

What's the minimum you can get by with and keep the sand, burrs & matts out of their hair?

Let me know too, we are leaving in 3 weeks for the beach....
You don't really need anything extra than normal for them at the beach. I used to live in San Diego and would take my sheepie to the beach and it was fine (I never took her in full coat!--that was winter anyways, and who wants to go swimming then!)

If their hair is short, just make sure you rinse them off after they've been in the salt water and apart from that just towel dry as usual. I would bring spray on sunscreen since Maggie, at least, wold burn easily with shaved hair.

With longer hair, I would just same the same as above, maybe bring a detangler. You don't want to shampoo them every day because their coats would get too dry...
Oh, and Darcy, they don't let dogs off leash on many beaches in San Diego and some allow it only after 6pm...so you might want to check on that.
Here is a city site with some hours and information: http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recrea ... hdog.shtml

And a site to look for things to do is www.signonsandiego.com
Good idea for the spray detangler and hosing off after the saltwater romp...Im bummed because no dogs are allowed on Oceanside beach any time...guess where we are staying....Delmar dog beach sounds like fun though...but leashes at the beach????bummer...we'll deal with it and Im sure still have a great time....

Thanks for the sites :D
Yeah, the Del Mar dog beach is great--and you don't get the dirty dogs like they get at Ocean Beach Dog Beach. The Del Mar dog beach would probably only be a 15-20 minute drive from O-side...
im orginally from California and often my brother and i'd take our dogs to Venice beach - they even have a clothing store specifically for dogs on the boardwalk.. it's cute to see. :) santa barbara is pretty dog friendly but im not sure if you will be heading up north. Are you staying in San Deigo area?
Yes Londons mom...we are staying in Oceanside...right on The Strand...a towel throw away from the water.. 8) I think Brian knows where the Del Mar dog beach is...I still dont understand why there is a leash law...is it an enclosed beach area..like a dog park? or is it open...glad to hear that it is clean....what is the best spray detangler? She is going to be shaved on Sunday...another bad haircut for Panda, but it will be a little grown out by the time we go.....I cant wait to sit in the sun and read....sigh
Don't forget that the sand can be hot -- if it's too hot for your bare feet, it's probably too hot for pooch's.
Good point, Ron. I am hoping it will be cooler here by then. :) If not, I'll let them play on the beach early in the morning and again in the evening.

I'm going to a little barrier island off the NC coast (outer banks) which is very quiet and rather deserted after Labor Day. With any luck, we'll have the beach to ourselves for the most part. Can't wait! :D
Darcy--to get to dog beach in del mar all you have to do is head south on highway 101 to del mar and there is parking on the side of the road.
It is somewhat enclosed. One one side is the highway, one side the ocean, one side a little river thing and the other side is beach access to the 'regular' beach and some home, so the dogs can run onto the part of the beach that has 'regular' people. And since del mar can be hoity toity, you wouldn't want to upset the 'regular' people!

I'm actually glad that there is a leash law. For some people and dogs it would be perfectly fine to not have their dog on a leash, but after having been to the dog beach in ocean beach, it is definitely understandable why there are such laws. Not that I have anything against pit bulls but there are a lot of pit bulls in san diego (and everywhere) and I have seen them do mean things off leash at the beach. The O.B. dog beach people are also a little laid back so they don't necessarily run up when they see a dog fight starting.

Plus, the beaches get SO crowded --I've been run over on my blanket before by dogs playing frisbee...

I'm so jealous!!! I want to go home--I mean, California! When you're in O-side, across from the pier on the corner is the house from Top Gun--the one where Kelly McGillis lived...
Okay if youre standing on the pier looking back at land is it on the left side or right side of pier? If it is on the Strand it would have to be on the right side....who is this person? The actor or the person in the movie? I never saw top gun
If you are stadning on the pier I'm pretty sure it is to the left. It was the house where Tom Cruise drives his motorcycle to and he asks to take a shower and he's late and she is wearing a white button down...you don't really see too much of the house or of the pier or anything. I wouldn't have known except a friend from high school lived across the street from the house and saw the filming while we were in elem. school...
Ill take pictures.....Brian may know....when we were in hawaii, he took me to the ocean pool where Tom Selleck is helping the girl learn to scuba..its in the opening sequence....we took a similar picture...are we geeks or what?????
Hee Hee! Yes, take pictures. And take pictures of Panda in the water!! (I know that goes without saying...)
Sand is actually fairly easy to get out of their coat, they'll shake most of it out, all over your floor, anyway. LOL
Thanks for that tidbit, Stacy! That was one of my main concerns - getting the sand out. I'll make sure they shake outside. :D
I take my boys to the beach every night for their walk.... first thing they do when we get there is roll, roll, roll.. second thing is splash in the water. With Murphy, I just rinse him off when I get him home in the tub.. he loves the tub.. and then just towel dry. I'm one of those mothers that always has her sheepie shaved.

When we go to the beach for the day.. I take a beach umbrella for the dogs... shove it in the sand and they are content to lay there all day and watch the girls go by...

Also.. I take lots and lots of water.. I feel like a pack mule lugging all the water..

I'm keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Ophelia this week. She's hovering right in the area we're supposed to be going to the beach on Saturday.

Hopefully, she'll blow out to sea or come ashore with very little damage early in the week.

Hurricanes!
YIPPEE

No damage from Ophelia and the weather is supposed to be GREAT!!

So, tomorrow, we're beach bound!! :D
