Abby Update

Well Abby is doing absolutely wonderfully. She now wags her tail when she sees me walk into a room, and just in the last couple of days will actually approach me for attention. There hasn't been any growling at the other dogs in a couple of days, but I am still watching them like a hawk, and never leave them together unsupervised.
She doesn't seem to like to eat when anyone is watching, I'm not sure what that's about, however she shows a whole lot of interest in food when it's suppertime for us. I think she has been fed only people food, scraps after supper. She is putting on weight now, is eating about 2 and a half cups of Iams a day. (I'm guessing she was only about 30 lbs when she got here, and is about 21" tall so that is quite thin)
I gave her a bit of roast beef last night, she doesn't beg, but you can see her eyes light up when she is hoping to get a bit from our food. She didn't take it out of my hand, or try to get it off the plate etc, she sat and waited patiently for me to put it in her bowl and wagged her tail while she ate it, and the kibble I put it on. LOL
She is just so gentle and elegant. I can't believe how "polite" she seems...lol... so very ladylike.
She walks well on a lead, and seems alert when she sees other dogs or people, but not anxious to go off chasing anything, or interested in going anywhere but right by my side.
She is beginning to seem more playful outside when I take her out, but in the house she is a couch potato.
Her coat is looking nice and glossy and healthy now, I can't believe the changes. I don't think she has ever been brushed, so she was curious about the brush but decided she definitely loves it. LOL
I'm not sure about trimming her nails yet... I'm a little nervous on that one. They look ok for now, worn down naturally, but as she has been a "house dog" for longer those nails will be growing so I'll have to start getting her used to nail clippers soon.
I wish I could put up some pictures, but still no digital camera and no one has been around to borrow one yet. Maybe I'll stop by my dad's tomorrow and try to get a few pics.
Anyway, that's it for now :)

Stacey,

I am so happy for you!! You finally have the Sibe you have always wanted, and you helped her out in the process. It sounds like you both won.
I am glad to hear she is settling in around Dancer and Sky. Hopefully, they will be close friends before long. What does she think of Isis, Winston, and Church?
Does she like Rob? I bet Rob wouldn't notice there was another dog in the house, if she was a sheepie...LOL
I can't wait to see pictures of everyone.

Hugs,
Stormi
im so glad abby is working out for you guys! pictures please!

one of my favorite things to do was to brush the huskies i used to work with... they love it so much and its much more satisfying than brushing a bratty sheepdog!
as for the nails, do some "shadow" clipping where you take her paw, put the clipper up against the nail and clip. Let her feel how you will hold her paw, the action of the clippers. Also squeeze her nails with your fingers somewhere in the process. It's the pressure on the nail that gets to them initially. Also do some paw kissin', rubbin', ticklin', etc to get her used to you playing with her toes.

She is so lucky to have you.
Glad to hear everything is working out so well!

Surprisingly she is great with the cats. She never even shows the inclination to chase them. Abby and Winston were laying side by side by the front door, and another time that Abby was lying in front of the door, Church climbed up and stood right on Abby's back to look out the window. It was the funniest thing, and it seemed Abby didn't even notice.
Isis (the rescue who never went away) has FINALLY found a home with an elderly widow, my neighbor. She never really fit in here, and after having her for a year and a half I had pretty much given up hope of finding her another home. However, the opportunity came up and it is perfect for her. She is not a people cat, or a cat cat, or a dog cat...lol... she doesn't get along with anything and keeps to herself. This man now has a cat that will catch mice in his cellar and will stand for the occasional petting, but won't get in his way coming down the stairs etc.... and Isis has a quiet home where she can be a cat without too much human or other interference. lol... right next door :)
As for Rob.... lol... he's fine with it, and everyone loves Abby, it's hard not to. :)
Thanks for the update, Stacy! I was thinking about Abby last night and wondering how she's doing. I was glad to read your post this morning and see how well she's adjusting. Great job! :D

wow! How exciting. Who knew you were rescuing X amount of dogs! So, how much longer do you think it will be before the pups are here? (I have no idea on gestation time for dogs...)
YEAH PUPPIES!!!
They are so messy... but so much fun.

Dogs are pregnant for an average of 63 days, 9 weeks. As far as I know, puppy movement is not "usually" felt until the 7th week, but she could be due anywhere between one and two weeks from now, I really don't know.
If she has more than 2 or 3 pups in there I'd be surprised, and she would likely not have them till closer to the two week mark. If there is only one or two pups, then I suppose it could be sooner since she may not get very big.

Sure everyone can be aunts and uncles! LOL :)
Well then, Uncles Tasker & Ty say YIPEEE!!!!!!!
YAY...isn't that the most amazing feeling, I could just sit and feel puppy movement all day.

Good luck, I loved Muriel Lee's whelping book, and rearing puppies.
Everything seems to be happening so fast now...lol.... I'm not ready! 8O
She has milk leaking tonight.... I've been told she probably will deliver in about a week maybe ten days based on that.
So now ... I had everything planned for if Dancer was to have pups, where etc.... but Abby has not been raised in the busy household atmosphere, so in the middle of my dining room won't work for her I don't think. I have NO idea where to put her to have her pups. I just realized this tonight.... lol....
I considered the bathroom, but it is too humid after a shower and they might get damp and chilled, so that's out. I considered the dining room aka office, and I think it is too busy for Abby, no privacy. I considered my room, but it is too cold at night, so I can't do that. I considered upstairs in my oldest child's room, but it is carpeted, with brand new carpet, and also Abby would feel too isolated I think.
A friend pointed out another option, to move dancer and Sky's crates out of the kitchen into the office, and allow Abby to have the kitchen to herself with the gate up. So far that sounds like the best idea. It has a stable temperature, easy to keep warm when it gets cold out at night, and although it does have some household activity, the kids do not NEED to be in the kitchen when Abby needs privacy and quiet. I just hope Abby likes the idea for one thing, and I also hope Dancer and Sky don't feel too miffed that Abby has taken over the kitchen.
My friend suggested I put a solid peice of wood over the rails of the gate so that Dancer and Sky can't see into the kitchen and so that Abby cannot see the other dogs for now, until we see how protective or not she is of the pups.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
YIKES 8O
I don't know NUTHIN bout birthin babies!!!!!!!
