Dyson Vacume ( vacuum , vaccuum , vaccum , vaccume)

Anyone own a Dyson Vacume Cleaner? I am currently bidding on one on e-bay, it's the "animal vac" and I am trying to decide if it is worth the "big bucks". I'm a vacume freak and feel the need to vacume almost every day. Considered an Oreck a while back (think I posted on it) but did not buy it.

Thoughts?

I have one. It is great for pet fur and rolls really smoothly but has some awkward logistics -- like everytime the handle is put in the straightup position, the suction changes to the handle rather than the base (this is for use with wands and accessories but it can be sort of annoying). It is by far the easiest vacuum I've ever had when it comes to emptying out the canister. It is rather heavy and clunky which would make it hard to carry up and down stairs.
Is it heavy to push? I don't have any stairs but I do have a "bad bacK" (all nurses over 50 have bad backs :( ). I had a Kirby once and it was like hauling a dead soldier around.
I have one and still can't figure out how to get the tube thing off. I have the model AFTER the animal which is less expensive (plus we had a 10% discount). It's the DC14.

When doing a search, I found this site which has them for $200-something. Not sure if it's a good site though.

ANYWAYS, I immediately could tell the difference. Worth the money. I am amazed by it. My husband used to sell vacuums, and still doesn't buy the "you really don't have to change the filter ever" ....because he gets all technical about the little particles it doesn't catch, but he loves it too.

Again, I still wish I knew how to take off the tube/hose thing so I can get under some things, but I'm too lazy to read the instructions. ;)
We were looking at the Dyson Animal, but the price was just too crazy, so we just got the Hoover® Self Propelled TurboPower™ 7600 Upright Vacuum from Bed Bath and Beyond (well, I'm sure it's everywhere, but that's where we got it) and we LOVE it. It is self propelled so the first time I turned it on I felt like I was chasing it around the room! And, it worked great on the pet hair (1 sheepie and 2 cats gets pretty hairy!). We've only had it a short time so I can't say what its long-term value is, but I think it is great.
Here's the summary of it:
"This powerful upright is self propelled, making vacuuming that much easier for you. It features the patented WindTunnel™ technology with a powered hand tool and picks up more dirt than other uprights. Features allergy filtration, brush roll off/on, hard floor cleaning, instant tool conversion and edge groomers. 12 amp motor. Comes with powered hand tool, extension wand, crevice tool, dusting brush and multipurpose tool. 2-year warranty. Model # U6436-900. "

Joahaeyo-those are sites in the UK, don't know how to translate those prices into american $'s 8O
My bad!!!

Do you get those monthly coupons in the mail from Bed, Bath, and Beyond? (10% off anything in the store) ..that really helps with the total price. We also had a $150 gift certificate too, so........ ...Mr. Joah definitely wouldn't have bought one otherwise.

I believe the windtunnel (i think) was the best vacuum last year. I did a search before we got the Dyson of the ones rated BETTER than the dyson and a few came up. In fact, in the magazine we saw (consumer report book), the Dyson was ranked #10!!! (and only ONE model).

BUT, my theory is... LONG TERM + worth the money ...the dyson would be #1. Any vacuum is good for a year.
#10?????? I thought they were supposed to be one of the best????? EEEK

Life was so much simpler when there was only one or two of everything to chose from.
My husband and I were shocked too, but I promise that's what it read. "ONE" of models (not all) made the list at #10. But I'm sure we will continue to tell you that we think it's the best. I wouldn't change!!! Unless of course Oprah tells me to get somethign different. hahaha ;)

No, it is a dream to push -- it glides really fluidly. But it is heavy to carry.
You can basically (very basically) double the price UK to get the US price, so if it said $200UK, it would be $400 something US...

You have to watch out with those Bed Bath and Beyond coupons. That's why we decided to go to BB&B to get the new vacuum, but in the fine print there are a ton of brands that you aren't allowed to get--Dyson included. That's a main reason we ended up with the Hoover, which we like...I don't know if the coupon is electronic or if the checker knows about it...so watch out for that...
hmm, that's interesting. The coupon we had was from our bridal registry. Thankfully, it counted for anything.

I'm going to miss BBB in Alaska.
We have the purple Dyson Animal. We got ours at Best Buy as our luck of vacuums was about the rate of one every 6 months, and we wanted to get the extra 3 year warranty. I love it. I posted about a year or more ago on here, and a few ragdoll forums I am on. It is very easy to roll, my almost 8 year old can vacuum her room on her own. It is heavy, but with the long attachment and the thin floor attachment, it makes stairs a lot easier. It has a very long cord, and I can get almost my entire house, if I plug it into the right outlet. It is easy to empty and clean out, you can check from numerous places to see if you get a clog, but so far mine has never clogged. Even when it is full to the rim, It still continues sucking up a little more dust. I was amazed using it, how much dirt was actually beneath my carpets. Oh, it also switches to bare floors, and it too works like a breeze. The only downside is the bulky base, has a hard time going under low things, and you have to switch to the thin floor tool, but other than that, I can't imagine owning another vacuum. I am also a vacuum fanatic like you, and try to vacuum at least once day, if not twice. I have a house full of furbabies, though....LOL
I think Ebay is great for a lot of things, we use it a lot ourselves, but I really would recommend going to a department store to get the extended warranty, it is only a bit more, but it is worth it. We also get $10 in Bestbuy bucks for every $50 we spend.
LOL, I am excited for you, you will love the Dyson!!

Stormi
do you recall about what you paid for it at best buy?
It has been about a year, and I have slept since then...LOL :P
I remember we waited until it was on sale, before we went and got it. I really think it was about $430, but that is without the extended warranty or tax. :? Check out bestbuy.com and look at the flier that gets circulated around your zip code. They should run a sale on vacuums, including the Dyson every few months. If you get the best buy credit, they usually have 6-12 months no interest as well, depending on what is being purchased. My husband thinks any credit card with zero interest in the most amazing thing on earth....LOL
Good luck! :D

Every time I try to spell vacuum, I have to look it up. lol

I know there are two U's but I can never remember if there are one or two C's.

I used a Kirby for a few years, it was the only brand a certain retail store used to use, and it came in the "new store" package. Back in 1979 and 1980 it was about $700, just for the plain old vacuum with no attachments.

It weighed a TON, but as long as you didn't have to lug it upstairs, it rolled around just fine. When one died, the store manager went out and got a middle-of-the-road home vacuum. It worked great for a little while, but just couldn't last for 10 years of daily use like the "Kirby Sucker".
Sorry, I am a fonetic speller 8O

Not a complaint -- just a commiseration!
Don't feel bad, I had to go look it up too, to see if I was spelling it right. When I was younger, I could spell very well, and now I have noticed that a lot of words that I used to be able to spell, I am now having trouble remembering. I guess if people can get the general idea of my post I am doing good....LOL
Ashlan is in 2nd grade and her spelling words have went to 10 to 20 this year. She is an excellent speller, and had a special award last year for making 110 on her spelling tests all year. I guess before I post, I can have her start checking for errors...LOL

Stormi
I have friends who have the Dyson Animal vac and absolutely swear by it. (I think they secretly have an alter set up and they pray to it at night! ) They have 3 Labs so I don't know if their opinion counts!

You can find them at Lowes also.

I've never seen a dog that shed like a lab so their opinion definately counts!!
I'm looking at the Dyson vacuum as the next option for us.
Thanks for the tip that its easy to push, but heavy to carry around.

We have a fold away vac form Hoover now, recently went into
a vac repair store with it to have it checked out and change
the belt. Well the fellow advised me it would cost as much to
repair, as to buy a new one.

Then...

He showed me their home brand made and designed by
him. We got the whole show and tell. (The vacuum looked
like one from the 50's).

At the end of his presentation, I asked how much????

Finally, after more show and tell------$1700.00!!!!!!

I grabbed our Hoover an ran out the door.
The next shop I stopped at said, your vac is fine just
change the belt . Total cost $ 6.00 plus tax.
The vac works perfectly!!!

It pays to shop around!!
:D
We have a Dyson Vacuum too, purple one like Stormi's. Granted we vacuum around once a week or so but the thing works great. GREAT SUCTION, no bags to run out of. We did the same deal and bought it at Best Buy & got the Best Buy bucks so that saved us a little. Regarding weight, I would say it's comparible to other vacuum cleaners.
Has anyone ever purchased a "Factory Service" vacuum? (AKA used sent back cleaned up and resold). It appears that many of the higher end vacuums (Dyson, Kirby, Rainbow etc) do this). Are they worth the price?
Well I wished I'd thought of this post on Thursday! I came back from my trip to see my family in Winnipeg and Grant informed me that Gooch chewed the hose on our vaccuum! 8O I ordered a Kenmore from Sears as soon as I could! It will not be in until Tuesday! 8O I hope no one stops by this weekend!

Colleen and The Gooch=>I had TONNES of fun while mommy was away!
Just an updat, I did get the bid on a Dyson DC07 Purple animal vac at a real bargain (new) through e-bay. Have been watching them like crazy for days (even setting the alarm for absurd hours to get last minute bids in). Finally paid off this morning. Won't reciev it til I get bac from vacation but I'll let ya'll know how I like it. Thanks for the feed back!!!!
How exciting!! Congrats on your new animal...LOL!! I can't wait to hear what you think of it. It has been great at picking up Sheepie and Raggie hair....LOL We have an amazing abundance of both.

Stormi (and the furry family that made us need the Dyson...LOL) 8O :D
Do any of you have wood floors? How does it work on those? I HATE my electrolux canister...I ding up all the furniture dragging that thing around
My kids have always told me I am vacuum obsessed, the vacuum very seldom gets put away in my house because there is awyas something that needs to get cleaned. It's one household appliance I always get my money's worth out of!
Ours came with a hard surface attachment that cleans our tile floors with ease.
Ginny - I was just wondering if you got your new vacuum and if so, how you like it. I'm thinking of taking the plunge myself. There is a refurbished one on e-bay for $259 that's the blue/purple one and the purple/purple one is $379.

Which one did you end up getting? And is this a good price?

I'm going to check Best Buy and Home Depot too.
Funny you should bring this up........... My new Dyson Animal Vac ARRIVED LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

I bought it on E-bay , new (not refurbished) unopend and only paid $340.00 (including shipping). It was the purple/purple one DC-01 I think is the model. I watched them for several weeks and bid on dozens before finally getting one in my price range. The trick is to NOT bid til the last minute and to pick one that the bidding ends mid week.

Before leaving for vacation I shampooed my carpets and so presumably they were extra clean. I got the Dyson out last night and COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT IT BROUGHT OUT of the rug. I am pretty fanatical about cleaning my rugs and THOUGHT they were clean but OH NO NO NO  , it was pretttttty disgusting.

Of course I've only had it 24 hours but so far I give it thumbs up!!!!!!
Have you emptied the canister yet? Isn't it a dream? I love mine.
Ginny, if you want to come over and test on my rugs, Im willing to see how gross they really are......lol...I wish they had door to door salemen of these....Id really like to see for myself....

SURE!!!!!! Send me a plane ticket

Pretty sad when the most exciting thing in life is your vacuum!!! But at least now I know how to spell it
LOL :D
That's great, Ginny! I'm really glad you like it. The $340 is a steal! I just looked at Home Depot, Best Buy and Lowes during lunch today. HD & BB were $499 and Lowes was $549 - YIKES! 8O

Looks like I'm going to have to start bidding!

I did "test drive" the one at Lowes, though. It's sooooo cool!! Now I really want one. :D
hi there, zoes husband here :)

Ive used a dyson since they first became available in the uk, 8-9 years or something, im severly asthmatic, and nothing, drugs, diet, has made as much difference as the dyson.

It is handy to wash the filters regularly, and the plasic bits do seem to break off now and then, but here in the uk the service is excellent from dyson, spare parts etc are very easy to get.

still, if you ask me the best vacuum ever made :) even if they are expensive in america, cheapest i saw them when i was out there was costco (if your a member).

edd
IT's so funny to hear the reactions from people who just get their dyson. They're all the same!!!!! :D

I'm so glad you love yours.

Happy vacuuming!!! :D
I've got a dyson animal and i think it's great.
We live near the beach and the many dogs that visit my house always bring some sand in with them so i used to hoover up every couple of days and i thought the house was clean. When i got the Dyson the first time i hoovered up i ended up with a cannister full of sand 8O .
Woo hoo!! Another converted Dyson fanatic!! I am glad to know I am not the only one who can get thrilled seeing dog and cat hair come off of my carpet. When we brought ours home I cleaned with my old vacuum and then used our steam cleaner before using the Dyson. I was in shock at how much it still pulled out.
We got ours at Best Buy, but if anyone knew how many vacuums we have been though....LOL.....we HAD to have a long warranty after spending that much on a vacuum. We enjoyed the Best Buy reward bucks though which is $10 back for every $50 spent, so it isn't too bad that way.
Now, I am going to wait and hope that the Dyson man invents a steam cleaner that works as well as the vacuum.
Well, enough chatting, back to house work.....anyone want to clean my house? I won't mind. LOL

Stormi and co.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm in VACUUM Heaven

LEARNED TO USE THE ATTACHMENTS TONIGHT :D :D :D

The thin floor attachment is great for hard surfaces, just don't press too hard, and it works better. The brush works great for vents and dusting things, and the one with the velvet on the underside is great for drapes. Then if you just use nothing on the side and just the open tube, it is great for picking up spilled dog kibble, cat kibble, cat litter, I could go on.....LOL
Personally, I didn't care for the animal attachment, just because everything else worked and it got all my dog and cat hair up and I didn't need to use the special tool for it.

Stormi and co.
I can't believe I'm drooling over the description of a vacuum cleaner! 8O

Arrgghhh!
Gets my vote....i got one and i love it. :D
 :x
We bought a Dyson Animal Vac to clean up after our two dogs (golden and collie). The vac worked as advertised it just didnt last. With in a year it started to fall apart. It is constantly changing it self from carpet mode to hard floor mode. It has a developed an obnoxoius whistle and ALL the soft plastic tubing has failed. For the price one would expect a much more durable product. I am sadly disapointed with the machine and can not recommed it.
Gosh I'm sorry to hear that. I've had mine about a year now and couldn't be happier with it. It is used EVERY day and works today as well as it did the day I got it. Guess there must be vac lemons, like car lemons!!
I would write to them and ask for a replacement. I can't imagine them not doing it. It's a malfunction and not what the majority experience with that vacuum.
I have had a dyson for about three months now, you will not hate to vacum ever again. I am 40 yrs old and have had so many vacums none touch this one I actually looked at the site to give a great comment. Mine is a dc25 when I vacum I do my base boards, ceiling fans and all. It makes it that easy....[/b]
