does it have to be related to manners?
How about bringing in the paper? Barney picked up this easily. We get a neighborhood paper on Wed and Sun am. While it would be there on the driveway when we took our morning walk, I wouldn't let him pick it up until we returned. Then with him still on leash I would coax him to bring it into the house and sit. However the only way I could get if from him is to offer him a treat. Another little trick is to take a treat in you hand, close both fists and make like you're transferring it from hand to hand. Then hold both fists out to see if he can pick the fist with the treat. He'll sniff both fists and eventually decide which is the payoff. Then he get's the treat. Good luck and congratulations on completion of the course.
The trick can be anything.
How about the "Leave it!" command?
For Carl's "cute trick" at the end of puppy kindergarten we taught him how to do the really high five. Just start out with a regular shake and then turn your hand over and keep moving it up as he does better. It doesn't take too long and with their legs and fur, it looks super funny!
The high five is a good one. Panda does that too.....another one is ...put a treat on his nose and see if he can flip and catch it....Panda gets it 1 out of 5-6 times, but we're still working on it!!
Kayli does a good high five and her bang isn't too bad either, although if you have a treat in your hand she doesn't stay dead for very long!

I would place food on my knee. Tell the dog to wait (repeatedly) and when they sat in front of me and left it, I'd tell them good boy/girl and then tell them to get it. Helped teach them to leave food alone. I left milk bones on the "edge" of the table once, was gone for about 8 hours, came home and they were both still there. (Had 2 dogs in the house that day.) Only had one steal food from coffee table and that was a piece of bread. |
Thanks for the help. He already does pretty good with leave it and wait. Since we want him to be a companion dog for Jonathon, decide to have him retrieve a targeted item. I put all his toys out and use a pointer to show him which one to get. He's getting the idea but he knows I have treats and wants to focus on that.
Another one is to give you paw for a treat. I taught this to Winston in his 1st month with us. Now when I ask for his paw he gives it to me. Always cool to shake hands with our furry friends.
