Bones

Chumley was prone to licking a particular place on her arm prior to falling asleep and she was totally unphased by the "YUCK" goo presecribed by her vet. I've recently started announcing "bedtime" and giving her one of those big gnarly bones you can get at Petsmart. She happily goes up to her bed and then chomps away at her bone. But there is one bone that she will not eat. She hides it under the blanket and checks to make sure it is hidden. Sometimes I take it out to give it to her again and she pushes it with her nose back into hiding. What's the deal? It is a bigger bone than the others but she won't even try and chomp on it. Is it special? Is she hoarding? Has anyone else seen similar behavior? It is very cute but rather mystifying. . .

 Mine do the same thing with toys or yummy treats. The like to stash them on corners and if you take it away, they'll find it and hide it again. If there's a special toy they've been fighting for all day, once one of them is declared the winner, he or she stashes it away on their food plates and it's declared off limits to the other.... It's funny.
Our last guy, Bart, used to gather all toys, when around his 4 legged friends and lay on them all!

Gucci just likes to hide a bone under the blanket to "try" to find it 5 seconds later! I find it "cute and mystifying" as well...but have no idea why this is! :?

Colleen and Gucci George=>it's called "hide and seek" mommy! If you would get me a brother or sister, I wouldn't have to play these games with a BLANKET!
What a funny trait. She also tends to cover up any loose toys in her dog bed with the blanket. She doesn't actually play with them as far as I have seen. I wonder if I moved the bone off the bed, whether she would return it to its hiding spot. How funny that the food plate is somehow off limits to other dogs.

Gucci George -- you crack me up!
I love the whole toy selection process more than anything. Clyde has tons of toys and when I clean up the house, I put them all in a big bin that I got from Ikea. (It's actually supposed to be the place for his toys all the time but he likes to have them strewn all over the house even if he isn't playing with them.) He'll stick his whole head in the bin and start yanking out toys that he doesn't want and tossing them to the side so he can have an easier time selecting the one he does want. The best part is, there's about 20-30 toys in there so it seems like he has a toy in mind that he wants. It makes me wonder what's going through his head-- like "I need the stuffed frog, only the stuffed frog will do."

Clyde also has an "issue" with blankets. They have to perfectly straight for him to lie on them. If he lies on the bed, he pulls up the corners so he doesn't have to lie on lumps, almost like making the bed. He's actually better at it than me. He'll knead and yank and pull for 5 minutes until it's just right...then he gets up in about 2 and sits somewhere else. I think it's just a touch of OCD!
That's hilarious!
Darcy and her ironing have gotten to Clyde!!

Hey Darcy, I was thinking about, laughing about whatever, you today when I was making my downstairs guest bed. My husband had taken the sheets and pillowcases out of the dryer and just tossed them on the bed. They were so wrinkled when I made it that I actually thought about ironing them. Then the little devil on my shoulder said just pull the sheets tighter!
Ill get you ironing yet Mandy!!! :D
NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoops! I must've made a mistake! I threw away my iron when I burnt my bra. Mandy, you want my old ironing board to go with that iron Darcy keeps trying to get you to use?

Back to dogs, I think the burying bones and hiding toy stuff all goes back to their natural instincts. The instincts are still there, they just have to find another way to deal with them since they don't have to fend for themselves. It seems like the instincts are stronger in some than it is in others though. Just my thoughts.

Funny thing is though, I used to play hide and seek with my dogs. I'd hid the toy and would tell them to go get whatever it was. Some were better than others at finding it. They'd stick that big black nose up in the air, take a deep breath and off they'd go, instantly bringing it back. We had a lot of fun.

Nothing like sittin' down on the couch and gettin' jabbed in the rear by a cow hoove, worse yet, steppin' on one barefoot. 8O
