BENTLEY

I have a fabulous sheepdog that has been through training classes. Very smart and well behaved but has one habit that I have not been able to break. He is constantly lifting his paw up and lightly smacking you with it...as if to keep you at his attention. It is like he is trying to shake but what he wants is more lovin........ I have firmly placed his foot on the floor and have told him "No" but the "Shaking" continues. Since we are training him to be a Therapy Dog for a local hospital...it is something that I must break him of. He has already tested for Therapy Visitation and they are very interested in Bentley becoming part of the program BUT not until this is broken. Understandably, the children may mistake this for aggressive behavior. Suggestions would be wonderful. BY the WAY. Love reading the messages and hearing the wonderful tales of this Wonderful Breed. I have had a few dogs in my lifetime...but NONE compare to him. The love and laughter he brings to my husband and I is priceless. :D

Well, I can be of absolutely no help with the "paw" thing, I am still trying to break Pud of this and I've had him almost two years now. Just wanted to say I think it is great that you are training Bentley to become a Therapy Dog, and good luck. Hope you stick around and join us.
Panda does the paw thing!!!! If you are sitting cross legged she will smack your leg with her paw...or if I am laying on the sofa, she will sit next to the sofa and grab your arm and want to "hold" hands...she wont put her paw down and if you move your hand away she grabs it back...I dont know how to stop it , but personally, I like it...shes not rough, she just needs to touch or be touched...when she does it, I'm touched :D My love puppy....
Welcome to the forum :)
I don't know what to suggest other than be consistent. If it appears he is doing it for attention, the best bet I think would be to say no and then turn or walk away from him and ignore him until he sits for attention instead, then reward him with praise and maybe a treat if he is food motivated.
OH MY, this must be a sheepie thing! GG does this too! We have been trying to break him of this and he is much better (occasionally "we" forget that this is not encouraged behaviour..."we" being my husband! ) I had started off doing the same as you, taking the paw off and placing it on the floor and signing NO. That, honestly, seems like more of a game for GG! So I have had great success in COMPLETELY ignoring him when he does this! If you can, move away from him so the paw falls naturally on the floor then look away and turn your body away. I don't know about you, but GG hates being ignored! He will normally sit nice and look at you until you reward the proper behaviour.

Hope this helps! Sheepdogs are the best and I think they would be the best for therepy visitations!

Welcome to the forum!

I have nothing to add except that Spike is super obnoxious about it and I will just get up and leave the room when he does it now since nothing else seems to work. Ironically, he really only does it when I'm in front of the computer.
It took Harry a year to stop. But now Jack is doing it, so Harry has resumed trying to get his own attention. Yea Gads!
I feel your pain, literally  . Truman does this, too. My boss has a huge Newfoundland who weighs in at 140 lbs. Maggie is a therapy dog at my school. Even SHE does this on occasion. I guess it's a "dog thang"!!
Pepsi does it too, to get my attention.
He used to jump on me and do that.
Thankfully he no longer jumps and paws. I had scratch marks down my back. No I just have paw marks on my legs

Tuc does this also, but maybe its because he's still a puppy that he's not quite so gentle. he grabs things constantly with his paws, balls, food, the neighborhood kids.....

he will get on the couch, and wait for bogey to walk by an slap him! yep, right across the back of the head. BAP! how do i get bogey to do the ignoring? lol
Thank you for all of the reply's. I feel better knowing that there are many OES out there that apparently do the same thing :) It does seem to be a game and his way of communicating that he wants you to "Love on Him" some more. OES are so affectionate and I agree that they would be wonderful as Therapy Dogs. They are like Life Size Teddy Bears. I have found that when we take him out to meet and greet people....as long as you explain that his version of "Shake" is a way for him to let you know that he is loving you to touch him-adults and kids are very understanding of the action and Enjoy it. In fact - I have a hard time going anywhere with Bentley...he draws so much attention and I am constantly getting stopped so he can be enjoyed. (Makes my evening walk/run take twice as long  ) Love to see all of your pictures and once my computer at home gets repaired I will do the same. Right now - I have to rely on responding on my work computer. In fact - I didn't even get to complete my profile correctly in my rush to join in - My Email address at home is: Bentley3@neo.rr.com and most days I can access my Email. Look forward to continuing the forum with all the other OES lovers. Believe me....my work staff bear with me but I am sure they Truly Do NOT Understand how much love you have for these Gentle Giants and how much you just want to talk about them

Me too! Note to self: file Bailey's nails
Yes, to all the above, I can hardly wait for two things:

1) GG to get a "little" more mature...SOMETIMES that helps

2) Shorts season to be over, I've got some good bruises from GG and I trying to "dance".

My husband has told me to please stop this, as people in town might think conclude that my bruises are from him!

So even though GG has pretty much stopped the "pawing", I will ask if we can do anything about the clumsiness that so many sheepies seem to possess? Maybe he could learn to not step on my barefeet...oh let's add that to #2, wearing a protective layer for feet, called socks!

Colleen and Gucci George=>I'm a solid gold dancer!
This must be a Sheepie thing, cause Beau does the same thing.
Clyde does it when he's feeling super lovey-- like when he's excited when I just get home from work. Lucy's signature move used to be the paw up with the growl for attention. People would look at me like I was nuts when I'd tell them to just pet her after she growled. It was all she wanted but, to a stranger, she sounded like she was ready for attack!

Mine all told me I was clumsy one, and if I'd move my feet when I seen them coming they wouldn't get stepped on.

You think maybe the paw thing is caused from us teaching them to shake hands? Just curious, since it seems to be an issue for so many.

God bless your therapy work. Nothin' like a sheepie to put a smile on your face and in your heart. (Oh, and a paw on your lap!)
All 3 of mine do it too.

I don't think it's necessarily from learning to shake hands. Toby does it and doesn't shake yet. He may have learned it from watching the other 2 though.

I still haven't found anything to stop the behavior. If you ignore Norman he either puts his paw back on you harder or digs his claws in like a cat!
Lennon and Sofa do it too. After we taugh them to give Paw, now they do it to get your attention or direct you to the fridge to see if you'd snatch something eddible from the huge white box. I think it's a cute trait.
I never taught Spike to "shake"- I think they're just smart enough to know that if they paw at us they're going to get a reaction, just like a child tugging on his mom's shirt or something. I know that it definitely comes out of the school of thought like "well, if I'm not allowed to bite or bark to get attention, what else can I do to make mommy/daddy pay attention to me?"

The paw thing is cute, but being used as a towel, after a long face soaking at the water bowl is a different story. Come strolling up to you, looking all sweet and innocent, then bury that big, cold, wet face on your lap. Brrrr. Leaving you with mud streaks on your legs and a smile on their face.
AP Guest -- I believe you have a clone of Hendrix... I'm serious he does the same thing! You'll just sit there and he'll paw you, you'll take his paw put it to the ground, he lifts it back up, etc. My fiance had a record of 10 minutes of doing this, he just wouldn't stop. We typically let him outside in the backyard when this happens.

  I forgot about that.... They seem to know that suits and dresses make the best sheepie towels.
