Weekly Baths for my Dog?

We got 6 month old Sarah, three weeks ago and she really needed a bath since then I've brushed her every day and bathed her once again. Does anyone give their dog a bath weekly?

Not anymore, thank goodness! When Clyde was 4 to 6 months, his crate/housetraining was still questionable and he peed on himself a lot. For awhile it was bi-weekly baths just because it was necessary but it can be drying to their skin and coat if you do it too much. That wasn't too tough in puppy coat (no mats and quick blow dry) but, at 10 months, I wouldn't even want to consider a weekly bath-- it's just too much of a committment and I'm lazy and Clyde wouldn't stand for all the blow drying!

Does Sarah stink or is she just getting dirty?

By the way, welcome to the forum. Where are you at in Michigan? There's a few of us in Michigan and we're always looking for fellow sheepie owners to meet up with!

Jill
Thanks for the welcome-
Sarah just gets dirty and a little stinky from playing outside. I think though that her shampoo is drying her out, so I may cut back and have a stinky but, non-itchy puppy. My husband and I just moved from Dearborn to Downtown Detroit, we're looking for a fun dog park and other dogs that can match Sarah's energy and size. Also, if anyone in SE Michigan could recommend a groomer, it'll be time for her first hair cut soon and I would like to have it done once before investing in the clippers and other tools.
Thanks
Nichole
Good grief! I'd be looking at some skin problem if a dog is getting the serious stink that often. MO bathes herself in summer in the sprinklers. I have bathed her twice in 6 years........when she found a skunk. I've not bathed Harry at all.....he's been here two years. Jack, the newbie, I just don't see a need.

The Pyrs.....well, normally their hair sheds dirt readily. The body oils arent a problem.......tho Glacier is getting a bit gamey. She's the one who has lost 55 lbs.......so probably some metabolic changes is causing a stink. It's the Pyrs who get into the skunks, so their baths are skunk removal........may it be a long time before they find the stripped cat again!
We have given our sheepdog weekly baths since we brought him home over a year ago...He loves bath time and the 2 hours we spend afterwards blowing him dry. A great deal of time...but he looks and smells wonderful all of the time. I started out using specialty dog shampoos but quickly realized that an inexpensive shampoo such as "Suave" works every bit as well. We shampoo and condition... his hair or skin has not dried out. He is now 18 months old. Everywhere we go...people ask of if he is a show dog and comment on how soft and nice smelling his coat is. We had his coat cut for the first time this summer and I cried... I love him with his full coat - but have to admit that all summer we have been able to go for 3 wks. before he appears to need a bath. That has worked out well since this summer has been hotter than normal and 2 hours with a blow dryer would not have been enjoyable. I do not BELIEVE that you have to bath/groom them weekly...that is a personal preference...but if you start them out young they learn to enjoy that pampering time and will do it very willingly. You DO need to brush/comb them every day or every other day. If you get behind on that it takes twice as long once knots begin. Plus - you know they hate looking unkept
I only bathe Tasker a few times a year unless he has gotten into something stinky. Daily brushing and grooming should keep your puppy clean and nice looking. Too frequent bathing will dry their skin and damage their hair. Unless you are showinng your puppy I would cut way back on the shampooing. There are some dry shampoos available for spt cleaning. I also wash Tasker's face with a wash clot when needed.
Phoebe stinks too, bout 3days after a bath. btw its winter and cold, thought maybe its to do with her gettn coat wet/ewwy
suggested that it might be diet, she's slowly eating eukanuba, and chicken.
haven't done the vet check thing, i know her ears are phroaarrr!!
Is it okay to bath more reg with a milder shampoo?
It realy varies how often I bathe Mojo. I have found that instead of an entire bath, just hosing off his back side solves the smelly problem. Although he is kept in coat, I try to keep it clipped short back there. One thing I would stress if you do bathing yourself though, is RINSE, RINSE, RINSE. Residual shampoo is another thing that can cause iching and dry out the skin.
P.S. Welcome to the forum
Oliver is our 2nd Sheepie...our first, Bart hardly ever needed to be bathed. But since Oliver was a pup he loves to get dirty. ....we bathe him quite often and he gets shaved down in the spring. he is now almost 3 yrs old and he loves the water and bath time. Every dog is different I guess!

Nichole,

My groomer in Royal Oak just did a really nice job on Clyde. Send me a PM if you want the contact info.

Jill
Hey Jill, I'd like that info!
I suggested daily brushing even with short coat to remove dog dander.

I'll ask y'all..........what is the allergen in dogs? I was told it is not dander......so what is it. I know in cats the saliva from grooming is the culprit.

As long as I'm getting additional requests...

Catherine's Pet Parlor in Royal Oak. They're right by Beaumont Hospital. The number's 248-288-1780. I actually called them to compliment them yesterday and the woman was so happy that we were happy.
We bathe both Bailey and Madison once a week. We have done it since they were eight weeks old and they love it.

They play rough with each other and because they bite a lot and tug on each other, I think it is the saliva that makes them smell funny after 5-6 days. Their faces start getting darker under the mouths also.

We bathe each alone and each dog jumps right in the tub and sits down. I really think they like bath time. It could be the all over body massage they get while trying to rinse them. :D Bailey will actually lie down in the tub, he is our lazy kid.

We have found that the Hartz Shampoo with the little colored beads works pretty well and does not dry their skin out. I also use most of one bottle doing both dogs.

We also brush them 2-3 nights a week.

Good Luck!

Eric
I bathe Panda once a month....I also give her her frontline, heartworm meds and a shave down on the same day....at least during the summer... Winter, I bathe her every few months...she doesnt smell so much, but we live in Phx.....
Now that he's quit peeing on himself all the time, I hardly see a need for a bath at all except for stunts like jumping in dirt piles and wading into a ditch. We brush everyday and use spray conditioners so perhaps that helps.
I bathe Jasper every 2 weeks now. Our kids get him really, really sticky petting him! lol
I was always told not to bathe a dog too often because it can cause skin sensitivities. Also because you are removing the essential skin oils which keep the coat healthy.
I use the Gold Medal Grooming Spray in between bath and it smells like he was just groomed.
When I do bathe my dogs I use Oatmeal Shampoo which is for sensitive skin...much milder.
My Shepherd hasn't been bathed in almost a year...but then again he swims

I give Beau a bath every 6 weeks or so. He's still in full coat. There's a place called Wash your Paws on 16 and Grosbeck, where they have everything to professionally groom your dog. You just bring the dirty dog. Everything else is supplied. I took Mollie there last Winter and the lady that owned it help me blow dry her. It was only $17.00. When I took Mollie to Petsmart before, they gave her back to me with damp paws. OK that didn't work! From what I was told, they leave them in a crate and put a fan on them to dry.
Karen-

Where at 16 & Groesbeck? That's right where I grew up. I can't put the dogs in my tub because it has a ceramic surround, they slip and I can't lift them. If you go to the Petsmart near Lakeside they NEVER give you back a dry dog. I have used them in a pinch but always end up with wet feet and bellies :x

That PetSmart even left Lucy damp the one time we went there. She's an angel to groom and has fur that dries pretty easily so there's just no excuse for that. It was winter too and it made me mad so we just never went back.

We have a do-it-yourself by me too but i's only about $20 cheaper than having a groomer do it. Well, maybe about $40 not counting the tip but if I'm spending that much already, I'd rather just let someone else do it. They're better than me anyway!
Holly and Jill,

The Wash for Paws is in Clinton Township. The phone number is: (586)791-0160 One of the owners also shows dogs, so she was really helpful with blow drying Mollie with me and my sister. Mollie was also in full coat. I couldn't believe it when she said $17.00. You just bring the dirty dog and they supply everything including an apron to wear.

I'm taking Beau there for all of his winter baths. The blow dryers are huge!

I did take Beau to Petco when they opened at Lakeside to have his chin shaved and they were really nice.
I'm like the other poster who answered "it varies" ...but for us, it varies from every week to ever 2 1/2 weeks. Anything more than that, she just looks or smells blaghhhhhhh.

Every time we go for a hike or long walk, she wreaks of ...well, what my husband smells like after a run. (don't tell him i said that) ;)

However, unlike a lot of show OES' on this board or posters in general who do not use conditioner (or rarely do), ...we use a very light one made for double coats every other bath. If we use a whitener, we use it 100% of the time. I don't want to dry our kiddo's skin out (and it's far from dry), and quite frankly...it helps me out a bit ;)

I can't imagine, with our lifestyle, going anything longer than 2 1/2 weeks. She'd have to be kept outside, and we would never do that. ;)
Well... If a dirty sheepie is a happy sheepie, then mine must be the happiest dogs on earth.

Once a month or so when they are full coated, but we've found out that sprinking them with Arm & Hammer carpet freshner and then brushing them off keeps them smelling nice for some time. Since it's very dry here, there's no mud or other yucky things where they can get theirs paws in.
I"m sure my hubby would AGREE what Tasker's mom said "bath few times a yaer" !

In summer time, I would give them a bath every weeks or at least every 2 weeks. In winter, would every 3 weeks or a month.

:?
use a mild shampoo if you need to give a bath every week or try some waterless shampoo or some foo foo spray.I give grizman a bath about once a month unless he gets really dirty. I use statzko shampoo and spray. I spray him every time I brush him(about every otherday).I work for a groomer and have tried lots of shAMPOOS AND THE STAZKO IS MY FAVORITE. it LEAVES THE HAIR VERY SOFT AND EASY TO BRUSH OUT.congrats on your pup.
I don't bathe my dogs that often. If their feet get muddy I wash them off, or wipe their chins if necessary, but I avoid bathing them completely because I find it leads to mats. It varies, depending on the time of year and length of coat.
Do you accpet an OES owner from England?

Dawn
Sure we do, we have several members from the UK!
You betcha!! Come and join us!!
[Do you accept an O.E.S. owner from England?]

Hi Dawn we are from England.

[I avoid bathing them completely because I find it leads to mats]

I find the same thing after bathing we get so many mats I keep baths to a minimum. Is there a shampoo anyone can recomend that reduces mats.

Chris Frodo and Smeagol
Bio-Groom's Ultra black tearless shampoo...I bought it a pet supply...it is awesome......it lathers wonderfully and it feels like there is a built in conditioner....Panda had no tangles whatsever......Now for the black part...it is meant for dark dogs...but the lady at the store said that it would make pandas grey darker and her white whiter....and I have to say that I love this shampoo.......it does just what it says......
Thank you Darcy for your advice I will see if I can get this shampoo in the U.K.

Chris Frodo and Smeagol
Not so much a shampoo, but use a good conditioner after the shampoo (I always use an extra conditioning shampoo anyway). I also bought an organic leave in conditioner for after bath too and Clyde's coat looks great.

Also, someone recommended Statzko spray, which I had never heard of until then. I bought the grooming spray and the no rinse shampoo and it's works and smells great (especially in comparison to a lot of grooming products!). You can get it at http://www.jbpet.com
Thank you, we will be growing their coats longer for the winter now, although we brush everyday still find mats a problem, will try your advice.

hi!
im from mexico and my dog lucky is 9 monthsold. we give hi a bath every 3 or 4 days because he is a tornado.... he digs holes, he eats everything and gets into every adventure. i think he is crazy but he is adorable, i also think that he loves water, and i proved it because he always gets wet even if there is alittle bit of water in a corner of the backyard. i would like to ask someone if you do something about the saliva andbad breath? is it the food(purina pro plan) or is it simply his humor. can i brush his teeth with regular human toothpaste?
I dont know if human toothpaste would be alright for dogs, But you can get doggy toothpaste flavoured with chicken etc.

i'm really lazy eistein goes to groomer once a month for a bath and a trm in summer and now that winter not that far away just his nails and uderside and eyes get trimed

the groomer says she not met a better dog he just stands there and lets her grooming without even moving (such a good boy)

we only bath him in between if hes been in the pond or it rained and hes been digging but normally if he dried out well it will just brush out he never smells unless weve has days of non stop rain (that happens quite a bit in the uk) :)

chris!

Use doggie paste-- you have to worry about swallowing with human paste just like with little kids.
