Liver Shunt

My pup has a liver shunt. It was diagnosed early (10 weeks) and we've been medically managing it thought lactulose, antibiotics, Hills LD dog food which is high quality protein. Our only vet specialist said we can't do surgery until 8 months to make sure the device they use is the right size for her body. We live in a very remote area and the specialist surgeon isn't able to visit for another 5 months. Our pup will be almost a year by then. I'm worried about going so long without the surgery - extended time on antibiotics, her first year being limited in protein. Are there any OES owners out there that have had a pup with a congenital liver shunt? How was it treated? When? Do you have any advice?
Thanks.
