A quick update on Sprocket

Hello anybody-my baby fluffy bonce has been off his food for a few days- being very "picky"- seems like wants to eat then doesn't touch it. Vet appointment today- she has taken blood and we go from there-she will ring me tomorrow to talk about the results. He has an enlarged spleen she thinks due to him being anemic rather than a cancer- am hoping for an easy "fix up job". Sprocket is 9 now but seems much older. xx xx :wag: :tea:

Poor Sprocket!
(And poor Mommy!)
Any word? :crossed: :plead:
I am afraid it was the worst possible news when picked Sprocket up from his x-rays and scan-large growth-spreading. Vet gave me a bottle of steroids for him and massive pink tablet to get down him twice a day-he has perked up and is eating but the heat in England at the moment in our part of Kent is very hot for what we have-he lays under a lorry to keep cool. We have a vet appointment at 4.30 pm to see if tablets have done any good apart from the eating now. A very unhappy but staying smiling for Sprockets sake as he knows if I am very sad and tries to cuddle me by sitting on my lap with front legs over my shoulders, he snuggles into my neck, oh god am going to miss that so much. xx xx
Oh Allyson, that's so crappy.

Thinking about you tonight.
Oh how awful! I am so sorry to hear this news. I will be thinking of you. :hearts:
Fairly good news about Sprocket- he is on mid range strength steroids and seems to be doing ok so far-more blood tests on Monday to see if has made any difference. He is eating, barking and wagging tail again-bless him, xxxxxxx

Oh that is so good to hear. Hoping for many happy, barking, tail wagging days! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
That's good news! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Sprocket has not eaten today so far-didn't even want anything after I gave him a very gentle brush-he went to sleep, snoring like mad, worse that hubby!! He has vet tomorrow so wont take him in until then, have had to use the tablets that encourage him to eat-see if he has any dinner. Not so good today. xx
:-( C'mon Sprocket :crossed:
Hopefully the vet can give him some anti-nausea meds to help with that. It is awful when they won't eat. Paws crossed that the vet has some good advice to give.
The vet looked at Sprox yesterday-thought his gums looked pinker-temp was fine and tummy felt relaxed. She took blood. She rang today to say about the tests-he is even more anemic so wasn't helped by the steroids but she agreed he had a very good quality of life and was happy wagging his tail and barking at the postman for his biscuit so she fine to help him as much as she can. Change his steroids tomorrow. We just need his bloods to be better if they can. I am sure he knows something is wrong- he wants to be with me all the time and sat by me today and ate 3 small meals. Bless him, he is trying so hard to be his normal self, amazes me how they just carry on!! xxxx

:wag: :tea: :( :)

Is there no help for anemia, like there is for people?
:hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
That is what I thought-the vet doesn't want to do blood transfer as have to heavily sedate him and he couldn't manage that, the tablets he is on should make him eat so he gets the vitamins etc he needs to enrich his blood-I thought he could have iron tablets which I am going to ask about today.xx
Humans can get a shot of something called procrit (Epoetin) ...and there's something for dogs, too. Maybe. Let me find the article. I have no idea about the cost
May not be a great option

I asked Val-the vet- about iron tablets etc for dogs. They have shots of vitamins as Sprocket had one of those for £12 when he was having his first blood tests and scan, x-rays. The answer was explained out to me very well. Basically he has great blood making cells but his blood cells are breaking down on route round his system. He now has an extra tablet to have once a day plus one to protect his stomach so sound strong. He can be on that for a week only then needs a break. Sprox is on my lap as I am on here tonight-something he hasn't done for ages now. :wag: :tea:

Something totally different- when I am on this forum or anywhere else on your oes site I have a warning flashing at the top of my screen saying important! Not secure! Do you have any idea why? Has something changed? Also you mentioned to someone else that there wasn't much happening on here now as all gone to FB-is that your oes FB page if that makes sense or someone else has made/done it? xx xx ( I don't tend to go on FB ) :sidestep:

Fancy a banananana =
Yes, the "OES Forum Friends" is our page.

Nothing has changed on this site. The new "standard" is for all sites to be "encrypted" (like a bank's website) so that nobody can eavesdrop on anything you type or read. But everything on this site is public anyway, and it would cost me another hundred bucks a year to encrypt this site that nobody visits anymore, so.....

(That's the difference between "http" and "https" in the address. The s stands for "secure". I might do it anyway at some point, but....hey)

Here's a link to our page on fb

Thank you Ron-that makes sense. Such a shame no one on here now- Have to talk to myself!! Sprocket has started his new tablets and they have a very big difference. He is jumping about now like he used to-gets tired quickly so can't go for a walk but just open the gate to field next door which we sort of "borrow" and let him do his own thing. Haven't had the up to date bill yet-hate to think but Sprocket is well worth it and hasn't cost us any extra for any problem until now, bless him, xx

Yay!
You aren't talking to yourself! Great news that the medication put some spring in his step. Even if he is not going for long walks, just being about to go out and smell the smells is a good thing.
I don't know if you have seen my post about Sprocket on the "crossing the bridge" posts-if not, well it speaks for itself me having been on that section. x xx xx

I don't see any post about Sprocket crossing the bridge. I am so very sorry to hear this, very sorry for your loss. I am sure that my Mady and Virginia will have found him and they are tearing around causing trouble. My heart hurts for you-they are such a big part of our lives and their loss is so painful. I hope that happy memories give you some comfort until you meet again. :ghug:
Thank you Mandy. Yes it the expecting him to come to the door to meet us that I am finding hard and not seeing him looking out the window. As Sprocket was our 4th oes he will have plenty of friends to play with. I know it is very soon but our daughter has put us on a list for a puppy from a friend of hers that is breeding fluff bums in the UK-she has a couple of years worth of people on the list so may be a long while as she is very choosy about who she breeds her bitch and dog with. We saw an advert for a not very nice place fairly local and the lady has 13 breeding females so has heaps of pups but she has now put the price up over three times the amount of what they were-We recon she will have lots of pups desperate for a home but I worry about their health but also worry about those poor mums/pups. xx xx

:wag: :tea: :ghug: :cow:  :wag: :tree: Just had to put some funny icons, xx xx

We got a puppy very quickly. I lost two sheepdogs, Mady and Virginia, and then my Mum all within a few months. My heart was shattered (it is still just loosely held together with tape and glue). The puppy, Kasse, of course did not replace any of those losses, but she brought her own joy into the house. Smartest thing we could have done. I was still heart broken by my losses, but those little puppy kisses and puppy silliness took the edge off.
I am pleased you have said that. A lot of folk are saying to me that it is much to soon but I think it is the best thing to do-as you say will not be a replacement but a pup in his own right but does help a lot with the upset. I can always see something in the new pup that the old dog used to do-it is like them all being there if that makes sense. xx
I'm so sorry for your loss of Sprocket. I was hopeful, you must be very disappointed on top of everything.

You do what you want. There's no right way or wrong way, everyone deals with the loss of their furbaby in their own way.

(Your post in Rainbow bridge doesn't seem to have made it, I don't see it anywhere. If you feel like it you can post there, though it's not necessary.)

It is interesting that you say that, that you see something in the new pup that the old dog used to do. Sometimes we feel like Kasse is channelling Virginia or Mady. She will do things that were very specific to either of those two. It makes us smile, and brings us comfort. And yet she is still her own girl. And if there is one thing I have learned about that heart is that a new pup does not replace the dog who has passed. The heart just expands to include the new pup. Having Kasse did not make me stop mourning my losses, but I very much believe that she helped me not go down too far into sadness. It had been a terrible time for me, with the losses, some health issues of my own, and not really taking good care of myself as I was trying, like we do, to take care of everyone else, especially my mum. Kasse made me laugh, made me smile, made me get up and play. I was able to bring her to see my mum before she passed, and so I have a lovely memory at the hospital of my mother smiling, and a crowd of nurses oohing and awwing over the puppy. It is nice to have some happy memories of that time. So I say if your heart wants a puppy, or an older dog, then get one! I hope it happens soon for you.
