Maternal Behavior?

Mindy, the 5 year old I rescued a couple of months ago from a back yard breeder, had lived in a pen and born 6 litters in her short prior life. She now seems to have adapted to a big yard and grass and her new family and a life of leisure, but she seems to have some ingrained behavioral traits that I can only call maternal.

Not long after we got her she discovered a bag of dog toys from my previous sheepdogs that had sat unnoticed for the last few years. She takes them out, one by one, and carries the stuffed animals around in her mouth for hours, eventually leaving them all over, then diving back into the bag only to take out another. Often she collects them back up and carries them to a bed we got for her that I put next to my chair where she she often lays to get petted. Eventually she gets 6 or 7 of the little furry toys and then lays down with them clustered around her just like a litter of puppies. She looks so maternal, I wonder if she misses her lost puppies and the cluster of odd animals reminds her of her only form of companionship from her earlier life.

Hello Richard. I have found that it is a "sheepie" thing though as all mine have done the same-they have to get a toy to bring to anyone from us, the postman, dustmen etc. I am sure if we had a burglar they would end up being sat on by a licky dog, surrounded by soft toys!! xx

She sure is a cutiepie. :D She may just like having them around her since likely she never had toys. I had a Golden who only liked 1 particular toy, a stuffed hedgehog. She would suck on it and then go to sleep. If the sheepies went after her pig, she would get upset because it was HER'S and Gracie and Oliver would tear it. I sewed it numerous times then started stocking up on them. Abbey never had puppies so maybe it was just a security thing. And my first OES fell in love with a green teddy bear squeaker. She carried it around like a puppy and would reprimand it as though it was naughty. She never had puppies either.
Mindy is a very lucky girl. She now knows love, has toys, a nice bed, a good home and people who will make sure she is protected and REALLY REALLY LOVED!! Again, congratulations to you all and RESCUES ARE THE BEST!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :excited: :excited: :yay: :yay:
All I can say is "Awwwwwwwe" :hearts: :ghug:
What a sweet girl. :aww:
She is a sweet girl.

Last weekend my sister in law came for a visit. As usual, Mindy spent a lot of time laying in her bed with her 7 or 8 "puppies". Then we noticed there was a new addition to her little family— a rolled up pair of my sister in law's socks she had looted from her suitcase in our guest bedroom.
I'm not really a guest. Just forgot to login.
Brilliant. Sprocket helps me to tidy up-any missing sock, shoe, boot will be under the table in either the kitchen or our "front" room-that is where he love to "bury" his "treasures". xx
