Virginia and Mady

It has been a tough few months for us. We lost Virginia in December, at age 12 and a half. I am still bitter about that as it was, in essence, a needless death resulting from a screwed up spay a few years earlier and subsequent misdiagnosis of urinary tract infections when she really was coming into heat (ovary grows back if it is not all removed). So when she really did have a uti, she was resistant to all antibiotics, as she had been given so many over the years, to treat a uti that was never a uti. Not sure if this is making sense. Lesson learned from this, at Virginia's expense (and considerable financial expense) is to trust your breeder. Ours said at the beginning that it was a heat, but the vet swore she got all of the ovary. We should have trusted our breeder and gone for a second opinion.

Two days after Virginia passed, Mady was diagnosed with lymphoma (on the anniversary of my father's funeral. I now officially hate December). I am equally bitter about this, as I am convinced that it is because, for the first few years of her life, I took her daily to a local dog park that we recently learned was being closed for sporting activities as it used to be a landfill and it was off gassing toxins. So not safe for someone to play baseball once a week, but fine for the dogs and their owners to use daily. Of course, I have zero proof of this. I am just glad that, once we got Gracie and Virginia, we stopped going to that park often. On the plus side for Mady, she is trying a new treatment that is not yet available in Canada, called Tenovea, and is in remission after one treatment! I know that there is not cure, and we don't know how long the remission will last, but I will take any positive news that I can get. Our vet (not the same one, we switched after the Virginia nightmare) has been going above and beyond to help us give Mady more high quality months. Mady even won some cash recently in an agility competition!

So my lesson of the day for you kids is to trust your breeder (if you have a good one, and we do) and trust your gut, and don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion. Vets are only human and mistakes happen. Also, I might have complained over the years about my husband's lack of domestic skills (started a fire boiling corn on the cob!) but watching him look after Virginia and Mady over the past months has been very touching. Just don't tell him I said that, or he will use that as a reason not to do housework!!
