Heartworm medication

Okay, having grown up with herding breeds I know MDR1 is an issue, is it a big issue with OES? What does everyone use for heartworm medication?

I have used Interceptor for years with great success. The dogs like the taste & it sits well with them. As for MDR1...although it is not present in a high percentage of our breed, it is still wise to get the MDR1 drug sensitivity test done by Washington State University. I have it done on all my dogs just for peace of mind for the future when they may need medications. A very simple cheek swab test & the price is reasonable.

Great Idea. Do you have contact info for the WSU laboratory handy, or does someone just ask their vet?

I can look it up . Cheaper to contact them directly than go thru a vet. I know that for a fact from one of my puppy people. They would send you the cheek swab kits directly & you just follow the enclosed directions & send them back with payment. As an aside, they developed the test & are the best ones to process it with results for you. Others out there but none use the same methods. OES are low in the percentile of having the mutation among the herding breeds but still worth the money in my opinion in the event you would have one of the ones who IS affected. It would give you the knowledge to know what meds to avoid. One thing to keep in mind tho' is there are meds out there that are NOT MDR1 sensitive but if not given in the correct dosage for the weight of the animal can cause adverse reactions. So just having this test done & receiving a "clear' reading doesn't mean you don't have to be vigilant. I'll look pup the address & post it.
Here you go Ron. I hope this link works for you. You will notice if you pay via credit card it is $10.00 cheaper than if paying by check. I have started out with the cheek swab page but along the left side are many other links with information about the MDR1 mutation as well as other drugs that can cause reactions or toxicity. The cheek swab can be done easily by anyone as long as they follow the directions. The blood draw would have to be done by a vet & thus would end up costing more because there would be an office visit, they would be doing the paper work & sending it in. Both give the same results & I have an OES friend in South Carolina who IS a vet who recommended I do the cheek swab test myself & send it in to WSU. It is wise to know this information because when a crisis hits with your dog a person needs to be knowledgeable about their own dog with their vet who treats many different dogs.
