Belle is limping...

My 4 1/2 year old OES, Belle, has been limping on and off for the past 6 months. I took her to a rehab/physical therapy place and they have determined that she seems to have some arthritis already, especially in her front right paw/wrist. Yesterday we had x-rays to make sure it wasn't anything more and there didn't seem to be any dark spots on the x-rays to indicate cancer. She is beginning to limp more and more. Doesn't seem to be in pain but OES never show pain. I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to ensure she's ok and that it is only arthritis. Has anyone had anything like this with their OES? Any recommendations? Anyone who has a dog with cancer that had no indication on an x-ray but the dog limped? Thanks!!

Did the xray not show the arthritis? And were the physio's not able to help at all with that? We have an old girl with some arthritis in her back and physio therapy and laser treatment have been very helpful as well as exercises that we were taught and do at home. Don't be shy about getting a second opinion, maybe with a specialist. 4 and a half is young to be limping around, poor Bella!
The x-ray does show some arthritis in her front right paw (which is the one she's limping on). She is starting with the physio - we've had 2 sessions so far. We have exercises to do at home and she is doing water treadmill and laser therapy too. No improvement yet but I think I need to give it more time. I just want to make sure that I'm not proceeding in the wrong direction and she be doing blood work and something else to rule out other diagnosis. If she were 8 or 10 I wouldn't question it but 4 1/2 is so young for arthritis. How long before you started to notice a difference in your OES after you started physio? Thanks again for your reply!
That is young for arthritis. Did she ever injure the paw? Have they suggested glucosomine or even mild pain killer like metacam? A low dose, though. It took a few weeks to see a difference but it was worth it. We also had one of our younger girls, just turned 7, had an injure paw/wrist from agility and she had a few weeks of treatment that completely turned things around. I feel for you, that is tough to see in a young dog. :ghug:
She has never injured her paw so it's strange. She's getting glucosomine treats now (use them for her exercises). No pain killers yet. She never shows any signs of pain except for limping. She plays hard especially with her best friend and I notice her limping more after those times together. No agility for her - she's the typical clumsy sheepdog. We'll stick with the physio for awhile and hopefully she gets better. Just tough to watch in such a young pup! Thanks again! BTW - my parents sheepdog is Maddie too. Great name!

Mady is our first sheepdog (we now have three, her mom Virginia and little bratty sister Gracie). When we named her Mady, I didn't really know about how 'matty' a sheepdog's coat would get!
Sprox has developed a limp also. Vet found nothing wrong. He can chase a bird, rabbit or whatever and then later in the evening he sometimes limps when gets up from a lay down. Not every day and the amount of running/walking makes no difference. It doesn't hurt to touch or move his foot/ankle/shoulder. Strange. Any advise?xx
Not to alarm anyone, but this is how we learned that our Nelson had osteosarcoma. He was only 9 yrs. old. It appeared as if he had injured his front paw but the actual cancerous site was in his upper front leg. The damage to his bone was obvious on his X-ray. I hope this is not the case it's your dog but it is something to be aware of and to have your vet check for.
MO had arthritis in her "wrist" at age 6. We had her on Rimadyl for 7 years. She did fine. We couldn't point to a single incident but she was a major runner......oh how she could run! You were wise to think bone cancer, so happy it wasn't.
