Grooming my Sprocket

Hello all. Long time since I have been on here-don't know where the time has gone. My question is about brushes for grooming medium/long haired sheepies please. Daughter has her Dylan trimmed down to what seems like soft fur all over, easier for her to groom with nearly 3 year old twins-she says has to keep having him trimmed short now as his "new hair" grows back very matted. I always used to have the "slicker" type brushes for my 3 previous dogs but with Sprocket the breeder gave a similar brush but with a curved head where the pins come from, gets through any hair easily but I find I am having to replace it monthly and I am wondering if it is just taking all his under coat out which isn't so bad in summer but our house/ workshop gets cold in winter and I feel Sprocket needs his undercoat to help keep him warm when outside. So living in GB what/where is/are the "right" type of brush to use. There is to many conflicting advise from non sheepie owners. Thank you for your help.xx :tea: :wag:

Howdy! We live in the Chicagoland area, with snow and bitter cold in the winter months (pretty much Nov-April  ). I used slickers on both Quincy and Oscar all year round, and they were kept in a 2 - 3 inch puppy cut. The slicker does strip out the undercoat, but IMHO, the undercoat was the biggest contributor to mats.

The only thing that ever got cold on either dog was their paws. Otherwise, they wanted to stay outside and rest in a snowbank! Now my dogs were only outside for their walks, or when we would sit out with them, so it was never for an extended period of time in the winter. My rule of thumb - if I was cold with all of my winter gear on, then it was too cold for them as well.

Unless Dylan spends long periods of time outside, I wouldn't worry about stripping out the undercoat. My slickers lasted years though.

Hope this helps!
