Please help Second Chance Animal Sanctuary

In today's paper www.stpetetimes.com , there was a reprint of an article that originally ran 7/18/05 (for the north part of the county). Second Chance Animal Sanctuary rescued 22 dogs from a shelter in Blue Ridge, GA. They have been transported to the Humane Society of Pinellas www.humanesocietyofpinellas.org (located in Clearwater, FL). Some are already in the process of being adopted :D !
One of the dog's dew claws was so long, that they pierced through his legs and out the otherside. The mayor of Blue Ridge has been arrested for cock fighting. Dog fighting is popular too and the people used the county animal control for "bait" for the fights. So SCAS steps in to save the dogs and the chairman responds by saying the dogs have a week to be adopted or be PTS. He defended himself by saying "The facility is not a humane society, it'a an animal control facility".
You can find the whole article (which is very interesting) by searching the archives at the St Pete Times on 7/18/05 - Second Chance at Life.
The petition to Fannin County started by SCAS is www.petitiononline.com/fc30513/petition.ht

Recent examples:
May 17, 2004-local man, Jeffery Anderson, arrested for family violence, is overheard by jailers telling his son, Jeremy Anderson, to go back and shoot the woman's dog, which he does. The dog was tied to a tree and could not escape. A warrant was issued for his arrest on animal cruelty, but was postponed so he wouldn't have to miss his graduation ceremony.
May 5, 2005-Mayor of Blue Ridge, Robert Greene, 83, arrested attending a local cockfight. He was charged with gambling, a misdemeanor. Article found in Atlanta Journal 5/06/05.
Tuesday, May 10, 2005-local animal control and sheriff's deputy are called to one of several properties a local medical doctor owns. Found are dead animals amongst injured and starving dogs, 11 in all. No food or water. Six eyewitnesses are present. Pictures are taken, reports are written. No charges filed.
Westview Drive-8 family pets poisoned, autopsy shows positive for strychnine poison in stomach contents of 11 month old female (strychnine available only by permit). It took several calls for sheriff's office to respond with "What do you want me to do? It's only a dog." No further action taken.

Former employees of the County Commissioner's office remark they've never seen a case of animal abuse/neglect filed in Fannin County in their 25-30 years of service.

The "good ole boy network" is alive and well. These elected leaders have been in position so long, they appear untouchable. I strongly urge you to let them know that times are changing, this apathy will no longer be tolerated.

This is part of the petition, the link does not work. But click on the link that is available and then find the petition under Fannan County. This "good 'ole boy" thing needs to stop!
