I'm about to get my first OES puppy soon. I asked the breeder all the questions I could think of. In response to the dewclaw/duclaw question, the breeder said their dogs have the pad, but not the nail, so they've never had them removed. Any ideas/suggestions regarding the necessity of cutting the duclaw if there is no nail? I'm worried that it might be a grooming hazard, but I just don't know. Thanks for any help! Confused
Dewclaws are usually removed when the dog's tail is docked a few days after birth.
They are removed for several reasons. When the dog lays down, the claw will bite into their flesh if the nail is not trimmed regularly.
They can get infected by shear neglet.
They can snag on stuff and become injured.
You can injure them while grooming if you should snag them.
Also, OES are like cats. When they get bored, they will groom them selves. If the dewclaw bothers them and they are bored them, they will sit for hours licking it. This is messy, discolors their paws, and can become very irritating.

If the breeder says the puppy doesn't have its dewclaws, then it was either removed or wasn't born with them (sometimes happens).
I never heard of anybody removing the dew pads. My dog has them. The only other OES I have ever seen had them.
I am curious, does anyone remove the dew pads? It really isn't that hard to maintain the pads. I clip the hair around them down, as the rest of the hair hangs over them anyways -- so I do not even have to comb around them.
