Weight gain

Good morning. In February we adopted a 5 year old male...he turned 6 on 7-16-15. At the time of adoption he had an ear infection which we immediately got him treated for. He has since been treated twice for chronic yeast in his ears (no infection) and I think we have just now resolved this issue. He is on Blue Buffalo, grain free, limited ingredients, he gets plain yogurt in his am meal and absolutely NO chicken. I think we finally cleared the yeast up (fingers crossed)....now. I have noticed his appetite has dropped off considerably...I decreased his meals from 1 1/2 cups in the am and pm to 1 cup at each meal. He goes for two walks daily and my husband said here lately he just doesn't have the "get up and go" as he previously did....he gets limited treats due to his allergy but I have noticed he is gaining weight...alarmingly so to me. We have an appointment at the vets for Wednesday the 5th but was wondering about a couple of things. Has anyone ever experienced depression in a dog? I ask this simply because it is now almost 6 months since we adopted him and I am concerned he has just realized he is not returning to his original owner (dx. with terminal cancer) and is depressed. He just lays around, agitated easily, aggressive with his food (guards his bowl) refuses to go the distance for his walks, decreased appetite etc. Also, could it be a thyroid issue? He hasn't lost any hair and it is still quite soft and full but the weight gain has me worried. He'll be getting a lab work up at the Dr. tomorrow but was wanting the opinions of the members here. Is there something I am missing? I am really worried about him. Thank you in advance.

He's a cutie!

Sounds hypothyroidism to me, which is common in OES. Can cause lethargy and weight gain while less food is consumed. Easily treated with daily pills.

Keep us posted.

:sidestep: off to work!

Thank you...that is what I'm thinking. The sheepie in my avatar is my female Hannah. I still need to load my male's picture but everytime I try it the pic is too large. Not real technical savy so will keep working on it....lol
I bet they're both cuties! :D

What you are dealing with sounds EXACTLY like hypothyroidism. Both of my males have/had it. Quincy, at 115 lbs, started gaining weight while eating 2 cups a food per day, and only carrots for treats. He got up to 123 lbs 8O before the tests came back. Once on the meds, he dropped to 110 lbs, where he stayed the rest of his life. Your pup is in the normal age range for developing this as well.

The behaviors you are seeing (depression, mild aggression) are also classic signs. They disappear once the meds are doing their job.

Good luck at the vet!

Don't forget about Dr. Jean Dobson in Calif. and Hemopet http://www.hemopet.org/ they've gone many sheepdog testing and do a more complete panel than many vets. Hopefully your vet would be up for a second opinion.

Lethargy, food guarding, weight gain, yeast infections does sound suspicious.
We had our appointment yesterday and the Dr. ran the complete lab panels....she said it includes everything that their office could possibly run...and we should know something this afternoon. She said he is the perfect age for hypothyroidism but she is looking at other things as well. She did find quite a few dry patches of skin that I missed (he is just so darn fluffy) but other then that his check up was good. When we adopted him (6 months ago) he was 95 lbs. and now he is 115 and this is with a decrease in food so I need to find out what is going on. I'll keep you posted to the results. Thank you to those that responded.
Yes, please keep us update, we do care. I hope they find the problem and are able to help you.
Yeah, I thought of those "other" possibilities but hope it is thyroid and the tiny pill will be sufficient.
Just received a call from our vet and all of his labs were great. She said he couldn't have a more perfect result so no thyroid issue. She said it could be weather related as it has been the low 90's with heat index over 100 and very humid. We have central air and each sheepie have their own personal fan so it is plenty cool in our house....just unbearable outside. For now we are going to watch him and take him in for weigh ins. Maybe when the weather breaks he will feel like walking and the weight will come off. The OES rescue told me his normal weight is around 110 but he had lost weight in the beginning when he was being transferred from rescue to foster care (he was down to 95) so maybe I jumped the gun....anyway I feel a lot better knowing he is medically fine. Thank you!!!
so glad tests were all good.
Whew! :phew:

Glad that all is well. Looks like I'll have to turn in my vet's license. :D

Well it shocked me...would of bet a weeks pay that he had a thyroid issue. So glad he is healthy but now we need to work on his weight although the vet said for his frame a weight of about 105-110 is good for him. I myself thought he looked great at 95 so my goal is 100 :D
Never hurts to be on the light side as they age as it puts less stress on the joints. Cut the food back a bit, feed different time of day when cooler and try for some outside work when -if- it cools. Mine usually get active after about 8 when temps down and raring to go in early a.m..........except for Kdog who loves to sleep in and miss the cool air. Bladder size of Grand Canyon........almost enough to take her off Proin pill.........but no, not going to. Try a change of scenery......load up in car and find a new walking path. Horseman across street found training had to include some sight-seeing to jazz the brain back up.
I've already cut his food to 1 cup in am and 1 cup in pm. We have walking trails we use and hubby takes him to a park or around our neighborhood. Last night I noticed he was more "rearing to go" but it is considerably cooler so we'll keep an eye on the weight for now. That was my concern of his gaining the weight...his poor joints. I give both sheepies glucosamine chondrointin w/MSM and fish oil daily.
Sounds like you are heading down the right road. We are all going to be happier when the heat lessens.
