Nexus 5 or iPhone 5s?

Yes, I am finally upgrading from my 8 year old flip phone to a smartphone. I've narrowed it down to the Nexus 5 or iPhone 5s. Cost is about the the same, and I have an Android tablet and an iPad so I'm familiar with both OS. My gut says Nexus but my heart says the cool kids have iPhones. The phone will spend most of its time in my car for emergencies since I still have a landline.

So which should I get????????

Just say no to Apple.
Hahahahaha! I have a house full of Apple. Heck I have a house full of everything! O.k. wait - I know nothing of the Nexus 5. As you said all the cool kids have the iPhones and my house is full of kids but I must say their friends have other phones as well. Depends on what you are most interested in having the phone for. We all have iPhone 6's. All are easy to use and understand. Easy to transfer pics of Steel to this site! Hehe! My 9yr old daughter operates hers like it's a piece of paper and pencil and she got it last year. Obviously durable with the right case! That being said, not as compatible as I would like. Maybe not ease of compatibility. Have a mac, and and all in one and a laptop and that is just stupid. The phone and mac should be in sync and oh man o man without sharing and I could go on but all you asked about was a phone so I won't! We are happy with our phones as single devices. Size, camera, music, durability, ease of use. We all had the 5s before the 6's , we went up the ladder as they upgraded. I think you should consider what you will actually be using the phone for and see which phone has better qualities for your specific needs.
I dont know if the iphone 5 has this problem, buy yesterday on a conference call at work some of the guys were talking about the iphone 6 getting too hot and then not working...just thought i would share with you. you could probably google it....
All I've ever had is iPhones and I've never had trouble with them. iPhones are better for virus protection than Android systems so that's a plus. I currently have the 5S. You've seen my photos so you know it takes great pictures for a phone. I also have a MacBook so no issues working together.

All comes down to your preference.

Cindy
I was futzing with my Android tablet and realized I prefer my iPad. So I am 99.9% sure I will be getting the iPhone 5S, just like Cindy. Although I prefer the feel of the Nexus tablet. Such decisions! I picked out new carpeting on Sunday in less than 30 minutes but have been dithering about a phone for almost a week.
Gold iPhone 5s has just been ordered.....
You will love having a smart phone!

Cindy
You will love having a smart phone, like Cindy said. My company gave us all droid max last month to replace the standard flip phones we had so we could get our emails while working during the day...wow...i am still figuring the thing out...the first time it talked to me to tell me a text from someone, i about died, i didnt know it did that....lol it takes great pics too, but still learning all the shortcuts for that as well.
Have fun !!!!
Watching this conversation and I too have thought about upgrading, but why? I never directly answer phone at home unless I know the caller and even then prefer they leave a message. There's not much I really need a tiny computer for away from home. I can sit quietly and wait, not pull out my phone and play games, I can carry a small book or my little Kindle if I need to read. Pictures? Hah! I accidently hit photobooth on the iPad while drinking morning coffee and decided, no more pictures of me, that was scary! While society rushes forward in electronics, I'm retreating and enjoying the quiet.
The iPhone has been received and activated. For the first day I thought "this is so cool." Now I'm like MEH. The one feature I use consistently is the calendar. I have a calendar at home, one at work, one in my purse, but I am consolidating it all on my phone.

As far as reading any bulletin boards, forget it. The print is waaaay too small. I don't even like reading eBooks on my iPad or Nexus. Give me something paper to hold.
I like the e-reader because I can increase the font size, yes, I click/touch/swoop more often...depending which one I'm using. I'm always increasing font size on the iPad. Days of reading stuff off a small device are long gone. Even searching web on standard iPad is a bit too small now, thankfully I didn't get the mini! As for phone, I don't use it! Not at home and surely not something in my pocket. People know to email me. I guess I'm going blind and mute.......or anti-social. As for books, you don't have arthritis in your hands and wrists yet.

Wow I pretty much agree with this :- ). I had a smart phone -- but I don't play games, I hardly text, and I don't need to check the internet every 5 minutes. I just need a phone, nothing else, so I went back to my flip phone. Works for me for now.

I read and post on bulletin boards on my phone all the time. A couple of things make it very easy - one, increase the font size: Go to Settings > Display and Brightness > Text Size then drag the bar to make the font the size you like. You can also make it larger than that in the Accessibility settings - Settings > General > Accessibility > Larger Text. You can make text darker there as well, which may help.

Also turning the phone in landscape mode makes it much easier to read bulletin boards.

Most handy is making an icon shortcut to your favorite forums. For example, after you're logged in to this forum on your phone, click the link up at the top right that says View new posts. Then at the bottom of your phone screen click the little up arrow and then press the selection that has a plus sign icon called Add to Home Screen. That creates an icon on your phone which is a shortcut to the forum that displays new posts since you last looked.
My flip phone was 8 years old. I replaced it because I worried about it dying when I needed it. My nephew works for Sprint and I am on his "family and friends" plan so the cost is very low for unlimited everything. It apparently syncs to my iPad since I have the same Apple ID on both.

But I still don't understand "the cloud." Where are my eBooks? Up there or on my device???? And if I'm in an airplane, how do my books show up on my iPad since there is no WiFi?
I thought planes had WiFis. I'm not sure about cloud other than it's a separate storage unit rather than your phone/computer. You are using their server for storage. I'm sure better (and correct) answer to come from others.
