silly dog lore

When people share "dog lore" as fact, I really try not to laugh or get the blank stare. With our little known breed we get more than a few of these.....ah......strange facts. Most common is "they will go blind if you remove the hair over their eyes." (no they will go blind if hair obstructs their vision and they run into something injuring their eyes). There are other eye "facts" we can share here.

But what other dog lore/dubious facts you've heard about dogs, not our breed but others or about dogs in general?

I'll share one my uncle (old country native) told me, "You'll go blind if you watch a dog excavate his bowels." 8O I'm still working on "excavate" but perhaps this explains my poor eye sight.

Dogs scooting on their butts have worms. (more likely impacted anal glands)

I have one......

The very first Bearded Collie?????

An Old English Sheepdog and a couple of sheep were being transported by boat to Ireland...When they docked, the sheepdog had puppies...and VIOLA~~~~~ THE BEARDED COLLIE WAS BORN.....
:excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:
   I thought all "sheepdogs" were decedent's of wolf x sheep. The Beardie then is the next generation, gottcha!

I have another lore: can't teach a old dog new tricks........that only applies to husbands.
Long time ago I work for a state agency in Illinois and around that time I got my first OES one of the ladies hear me talking about my dog and come up to me and say : OES don't shed, I turn around and show her the hair on my dark sweater, don't shed eh?
But thankfully they don't go thru a coat blow
Monica...Piper is your Golden right? You can't tell me your sheepie is anything compared to that! Both Sonny and Steel were sold to me with the understanding that there would be no shedding. Skye leaves so much hair I could have a 4th dog in here and be missing it all together! Heck yes Sonny and Steel shed but man oh man it is a far cry from what my Goldens did or Skye. It is more like hair I intentionally remove or they intentionally remove from themselves or each other not oh crap don't walk past her you have black on! I vacuum Skye, Steel eats the vacuum.

A guy at the dance studio told me the eyeball one yesterday - he had a lab, pit bull mix on a leash. He was outside waiting for his daughter. I cautiously walked Steel past them and went inside and continued the convo with Steel safely inside being snuggled by all the people. He said he was waiting outside because his dog was a little "nervous" around strangers. I said oh well maybe you shouldn't bring it around a studio full of children and concern yourself so much with OES vision and hop on the training of lab pit socialization techniques mmmmm just sayin'. He laughed and I laughed to ease the tension a bit and Aensley, Steel and I waited for them to leave until we did. Dogs aren't typically allowed in there but Steel is sort of an everyday occurrence and the owner would rather allow it than argue with me I think. No one else has started bringing in their pets so I think she tolerates it.

I agree with you, Piper sheds in a way that make my carpet look like a shaggy golden laying down, and we vacuum every other day ! she is terrible, and yes Matilda shed too but is not that bad. I also have a Corgi and a Australian Terrier , they shed to more than the OES
I'm told by those with short coat dogs (I've never had one) that their hair is short and will weave itself into clothing, upholstery and rugs making it even harder to remove. Would assume short hair cat would be same

Another doggie lore: Blue or wall eye, must be blind in that eye.

A Momism (who didn't like dogs): Giving them chocolate will give them worms. (One wonders about the chocolate quality she knew........though we know chocolate is deadly to dogs, so don't have to worry about the worms  )

Dog humping is sexual..........we know it's not but rather a dominance issue.
I was going to mention the blue eye thing bout being blind. My Violet was wall eyed and believe me, that blue eye didn't miss a beat.
