Mattie has a mass near her thyroid

On Sunday I was rubbing Matties neck and I felt a rather large lump. I scheduled an appt right away with the vet for today. They took a few samples and looked at them in their lab, but said they weren't comfortable making a diagnosis. So they sent them out for pathology.
Im worried sick. The vet said the results should be back in 48 hours.

I feel like I could tell the news isn't good. I just felt like the vet had a strange look on her face, also the vet techs came in and sat on the floor with Mattie and were petting her for no reason. Hopefully Its just me being paranoid.
Say a prayer for my precious girl.

thinking of you guys!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Paws crossed for the little lady. :crossed: :crossed: :hearts: :hearts:  Surgery is possible if the tumor isn't too large or is not the aggressive cancer.
Any news on Mattie?
Thank You for the kind words. Her tests results came back today and she does have cancer. They just can't tell what kind. So the lab suggested a biopsy. So Im waiting for the oncologist surgeon to call back.
I'll update when I know more.

Thank You again
:ghug:

We're all here for you. Such awful news; no one ever wants to hear the C word. But it could be operable- my mother had thyroid cancer and they popped out her thyroids and she's still going strong several years later. Fingers crossed for a full recovery!!!
Lets hope it's treatable.
Hoping so much that, like Allison said, they can just go in and remove the bad stuff and nice and tidy. You give Mattie big hugs from all of us. :ghug:
Hugs to you and Mattie. I love seeing her sweet face.
You and Mattie are in our thoughts.

Hugs and prayers to you and Mattie. Please keep us updated.
Hugs to sweet Mattie :ghug: :ghug:
Laughed at "popped" out the thyroid.......there's a lot of important stuff in that area plus the thyroid wraps around the trachea. Glad she is doing well. Hope same surgery is possible for Mattie.
yes, well I MIGHT have over-simplified it a tad. 8) But the idea is there. And to hear my mother tell it, she breezed in and breezed out. I'm hoping Mattie has a similarly breezy experience. We're thinking of you guys still, and hoping got the very best outcome!!!! :ghug:
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

Sending good thoughts for you and Mattie.
Thank You all for your warm thoughts and healing vibes.
I'm trying to be strong. I had a vet friend tell me that its not good for Mattie or me to every time I look at her to cry and hug on her. So I'm trying not to be the big Mush that I am.

Our appt is Monday with a Surgical Oncologist. They will do a consult, CT Scan, then as long as the cancer hasn't spread they will remove the tumor right there.

The main surgeon is one of the founding fathers of canine oncology. I am confident we are in good hands.

I gave her a hair cut yesterday. I didn't want her pony tail to fall out and the techs not put it back in.( Things I worry about)
I will bathe her today. Then the plan is to spend the day outside in the beautiful sunshine with her and Frankie enjoying the nice day.

Thank You again everyone. I will update tomorrow.
:hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Looking forward to an update.
I know Mattie will do great.
Things haven't gone as we were hoping. The surgeon was very optimistic by feeling Matties neck that the tumor would be easily removed and no issue. After the CT scan they found out that she has 2 tumors. One on each side of her thyroid. Dogs do not do well when you have to remove that much Thyroid. Her lungs are clear which is good, it hasn't spread yet. So they did not go in and even do a biopsy. He is suggesting we go to an oncologist and have radiation done. Studies show that Thyroid tumors respond to radiation very well. survival rates are 24-36 months in some cases. So we have an appt with the cancer center Tuesday of next week. Nothing wrong with gathering information to make a knowledgeable decision. I know that we do not want to do Chemo, but are willing to try radiation.
I will update when we know more about whats going on.
I am so exhausted.
Thank You for your prayers and well wishes. They really do mean more than you'll ever know.
Sorry it didnt go as well as you hoped. Hugs to you all. :ghug: :ghug: Prayers that the radiation will work for the sweet girl. :hearts: :hearts:
I am so sorry that you are going through this. I hope that Tuesday's appointment goes well and that radiation is a successful treatment. :ghug:
oh Lisa- I'm so sorry. I desperately wanted it to be better news than this- we all did.

Thinking about you and Mattie! :hearts: :ghug: :hearts:
I'm sorry it is on both sides and surgery is not an option. Will keep you in my prayers. It is so hard when they get sick. Harry lasted longer than we expected with his cancer........and we did no treatment. May you be bless with extra time.
I am so sorry to hear this, Mattie is such a special girl and I hope the radiation can buy her some quality time.
If it helps thyroid CA is extremely easily managed in humans. They will do surgery or "kill" off the thyroid with a radioactive tablet which also takes out the CA. They simply go on thyroid replacement meds and thats that. not sure if that is the same for dogs but one of the better CAs to get.
Damn.

Lets hope the radiation treatment works.
So sorry it wasn't the news we were hoping for.
Hoping the radiation treatment is a good option. :ghug:
So sorry Lisa.....I know how difficult it is to live in the moment when one is going through this.
I pray that Mattie will respond to whatever treatment you decide for her. We all love "our" Mattie!!! You have our support and love~~~ keep us close..... :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
I'm sorry.
The radiation therapy has been very successful in humans for a longtime. So many treatments for humans cross over to veterinary medicine and do very well - and that's helpful since the animals can't tell us how they are feeling.
Update on Mattie-

We saw the oncologist on Tuesday. They say that dogs that undergo radiation treatment with thyroid cancer have a pretty good success rate. 80% of dogs survive for 24-36 months. Matties 10, so that to us is great. I know they are just statistics but we are hopeful right now.
They send everything out to Colorado State University and they come up with a treatment plan. As of right now it seems like a months worth of treatments 5 days a week.
supposedly little to know side effects when you use radiation on the Thyroid. Possibly a sore throat towards the end of treatment but it goes away.
Thank You all for your kind words and wonderful thoughts and prayers. They are so greatly appreciated

That is very positive news!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
Thanks for updating!
The news sounds very encouraging and minimal side effects is fantastic. :clappurple:
That sounds very encouraging! Another 2 years of reasonable health would be something to be very grateful for. Hoping it all goes well for her! :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:
