Canine flu in the Midwest

Been reading a bunch of articles about an outbreak of canine flu in the Midwest. Just hoping all my forum friends pups are o.k. :hearts:

The only place Oscar goes where he would come into contact with other dogs is the vet. He is due for senior blood work, but we are staying away, especially since he is immuno-compromised.

I am sure Oscar does not mind! 8)

Even though I live in Minnesota, I did contact my vet and was told this flu is covered in the distemper shot. Doesn't really sound correct to me but I don't have a degree in Vet Medicine. Any opinions?

" The University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine says the virus has sickened at least 1,000 dogs in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. Recent tests from the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have identified the strain as H3N2. Clinical assistant professor Keith Poulsen says it's not yet known how effective current vaccines are against this strain, which is believed to have come from Asia." just a snippet from the article.
Just took Steel in for his lepto booster  . On the upside, my vet schedules people so there is only one pet in the waiting room at a time if they can help it and that was the case when we went in. Also, we were one of the first appts. in the morning so hopefully the place is scrubbed down every evening and there hadn't been too much activity that morning! Steel covered the entire office smelling and licking people and just generally walking about to see everyone so praying to God the place was clean. I just had them all in before we went on vacation to get their heart worm, flea, tick yada, yada so the lepto booster was actually a few days delinquent (I'm still in the window). I'm guessing the flu was already in full swing when I was there the first time. It is just right now we are hearing about it. Just a note... Steel gained 4.5 more lbs in that time. Still looking lean as ever and blowing my mind. Lets all pray for healthy babies!!!
I can not say if Kirby had this or not. About 10 days ago he became very ill, very fast. Our initial thought was he had something caught in his throat. Sudden gagging, and coughing when attempting to eat or drink anything; especially water. Our vet did not do any lab work, he thought it was mainly a GI thing (maybe something he ate). He received anti-emetic and broad spectrum antibiotics, first by injection. He did improve slowly. Never did have a runny nose. After 7 days, water was still very hard to get into him. However, he has improved. Still needs something for pain to combat sore throat in order to get food and water in. Water continues to be more of challenge than food; his appetite is back. We live in South Dakota; have not heard of cases here in the news yet. We were recently in the dog park in Minneapolis visiting our son also. We will never know for sure if he had it or not. I am wondering though, the more I read. His symptoms were not spot on, but he had some of them. The good news is he is back and feeling better. I really wondered if we were going to lose him. Illness came on so fast and severe.
So glad your Kirby recovered. :hearts: It is gut wrenching to watch our babies be sick. :(
