Breeders in Canada and costs

Hello there,

I am quite set on getting my first OES for my family and I was wondering about breeders in Canada, more specifically Ontario. Based on my research, Blueshire, Lakesong, and Ladykin appears to be reputable breeders. Have you guys had any experience with any of these or other wonderful breeders in the past? If so, how often do they breed/difficulty of adopting with them/and what was the price for your puppy?

Thank you!

My boy Langley is from Lakesong and he is the sweetest dog in the world!
I think that for pricing information, you are best off contacting the breeders themselves.
Hi! My Sam is a Blueshire boy. He's our first OES and we are completely in love. Amber is a very responsible and conscientious breeder and a wonderful person. She has been available for any questions I have had along the way. As far as pricing and when she will have litters available, you definitely need to contact her (or whatever breeder you are interested in) directly to get that info.

Good luck! Be sure to share pics whenever you get your little sheepie. We love pictures!
I would vouch for all three of those breeders.
Hi folks - my first post (and I am so excited to be here). I have researched and researched (and researched some more!) for the best dog for me.. and have decided on an Old English Sheepie. I am sooo excited now! I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and am now in the process of talking to breeders. I have emailed quite a few found on the web (including all the ones listed here).

I am sooo struggling now!! Not with the breed choice, but now with making sure I choose the right breeder! I have not found any local (reputable) breeders so it is unlikely I will be able to visit, meet the dogs, etc.. which is unfortunate.

I guess I am just looking for some advice... I am asking lots of questions. Is it appropriate to ask for references from breeders? Is there any way to find out if breeders have had problems with their dogs/"returns"? I have asked those questions of course but it is easy to lie.

Which ones are "safe bets"? IE, the three that were mentioned here - Blueshire, Lakesong, and Ladykin - they do each seem reputable based on my research (but I have not heard from from all of them in my inquiries). Do they each come highly recommended or should I be concerned ?

Of course is is appropriate to ask for references! And to ask a lot of questions. I think that any good breeder would be worried if you didn't ask questions!

I have three Blueshire girls (ten year old, five year old and a three year old) and live in Ottawa. We are lucky that we live a five hour drive from Blueshire, so we have been able to go there regularly. I have met quite a few Ladykin dogs and have met their breeder several times (well, two breeders really, it is Sandy and Dinko both) and also think very highly of them. I have only met the Lakesong breeder once, briefly, a number of years ago at a dog show, so don't know much about her breeding program but I think that there are others here who know more about her dogs and can help out there.

We often have people call us and ask if they can meet with us to meet our girls and to ask questions about our breeder, who lives in the Niagara region. We had a family here on Saturday to visit with our girls. Whether or not these folks get a sheepie from Blueshire, our biggest goal is making sure that they leave knowing what to look for in a good breeder. I don't think that there are any OES breeders in Nova Scotia, none of which I am aware. I know that there are a few Blueshire sheepies out there, some in Newfoundland too. So ask for references. Ask for proof that any breeder you speak with does health testing, CERF, hips, etc. We also like to tell families as much about the breed as we can, in terms of when to spay/neuter, our trials and tribulations with managing the coat, the mistakes and successes we have had. And I confess that we brag a bit about our girls who do agility, herding and therapy dog work.

Good luck in your search! Be careful about Old English Sheepdogs, though. They are like potato chips and it is hard to stop at just one!
I don't think you'll go wrong with purchasing a pup from one of those 3 breeders listed in the original post.
Thank you for replies! I have spoken with a couple of breeders and feel so good about choosing an old english sheepdog.
The one in Lindsay is a puppy mill. STAY AWAY

I had several OES over the years and am familiar with most. this is the only one I would NOT recommend. They are only in it for the money too!

Buyer beware!
Lakesong was excellent vet checked guaranteed full health check and a beautiful girl
