Recommend spraying for ticks in our backyard? Also lyme vacc

Hi All,

Unfortunately our backyard has quite a few ticks, and we have frequent deer in the yard as well. Our dog has gotten numerous ticks on him and we have been successful with removing them. However, now we don't allow him back there anymore and he hangs out on our deck.

Has anyone tried to have someone come in and spray the yard, or bought a spray -- any recommendations? was it successful?

We also have a house in Florida where we will be in the Summer, so if we were to spray the yard- we could do it during that time.

Our vet recommends the lyme vaccine, but we are hesitant. Our other sheepie unfortunately got lymes when he was about 5 years old. Since we do find ticks on him, we were considering it. What are your thoughts on that as well?

Thanks.

Hi guest,
I've sprayed my back yard for fleas/ticks a couple of times.
I've used a product from PetSmart (can't remember the name right now; will post it when I get home) that hooks up to your hose.
But after I sprayed, I wouldn't let the dogs back there for a month. I wanted to make sure there was none left on the grass.
My dogs like to lick their paws.

And both my dogs get the Lyme vacc. Haven't seen a negative reaction in them from the shot.

There's also some new oral anti flea/tick meds for dogs. You may want to look into those as well.
Hello from Alabama. I go to the local feed and seed and pick up a bottle of permethrin. It's concentrate and you'll mix it in a bug sprayer and it kills ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, roaches, wasps, ....you name it. I spray my yard once a month. A bottle is about $16.95 and you follow instructions on how much permethrin and how much water. I'm telling ya, this is the real deal. Google it.

Thanks Tammy!
I am going to look into Permethrin.

Do you know when it's safe to let the dog/s out in the backyard after spraying?
Also do some common sense work, eliminate places where ticks hide like tall grasses, junk/wood piles. Ticks crawl up on the end of things so they can hitch a ride on a passing animal. Keeping your lawn cut, keeping the dogs out of the bushes, etc. should also be high on your list. New vet here from Mass. and commented Lyme vax is a must there, just as out here Parvo vax is a must.
