Totally distracted

Hi

So we picked up our new pup Annie last Tuesday afternoon. :yay: :hearts: She is adorable and I will post pics of her shortly. But we have a problem with Monty who is now 13 months old and so distracted with Annie that he is not eating. :twitch: We have tried separating them for meal times and whilst Annie is eating all of her meals, Monty wont even sniff at his. He has realised where we take Annie for her meals and sits by the gate until we come back. Any suggestions on what we can do to get Monty to start eating again? He is losing weight and he was light to begin with! :lmt:

Thanks

Oh poor Monty. I bet all kind of things are going through his little head. Where did that come from??? Dont touch my couch!!! My new toy barks?? I am sure things will work out. They are like kids. Congrats on your new baby. Send pics soon. I remember you said you made Montys food at home. Have you tried a little something different in his food to get him interested?? Like baby carrots to crunch?? Moms hairbrush?? lol You guys are great parents. patience and love and it will be fine.
Wow...sounds very similar to when I brought Gunner home when he was 10 weeks old. Beau, who is 3, did the same thing when I left the room to feed the puppy. He would sit by the baby gate and stare down the hallway until we came back. He would not touch his food and seemed so preoccupied with the puppy. I can only imagine what he was thinking but I think it was along the lines of "what the heck is that thing and why is it getting so much attention"?!!!??
One thing that worked for me was to feed the puppy, give him a break and then crate him afterwards I would feed Beau by himself and add extra yummy things to his food like yogurt or chicken broth and praise him lavishly and made HIM the center of attention when he ate. After this worked for a bit, I feed the two together in the same room but on opposite sides with me in the middle to run interference. Beau began to eat his food quickly to avoid the puppy from possibly getting it.....what a brat! Eventually as they got use to each other, played with each other, took walks together and slept in the same room together the new puppy in the house drama finally stopped. :D I also learned that eventually they will get hungry enough and finally eat. With concerned and loving parents as you, I am sure he will be just fine! :wag: Would love to see pictures of the new pup!!!
Thanks so much for the great suggestions. I think we have turned a corner with Monty's eating. Last night and again this morning we put their bowls side by side, Monty's with a little cheese sprinkled on top, and he finished the whole thing!
Now if we can get his nose out of her butt for more than five minutes we might be all happy! :lmt:
Glad to hear he is eating again. :clappurple: cant wait for the pics of Annie on
"the red couch" and to see if Monty will let her get on it or push her off
Did you get her from the same breeder you got Monty from??
Now, of course, he will demand cheese with every meal!
You might try putting all of their food down together in one pan/plate. Puppies are used to eating with their littermates. Eventually the older puppy will start to eat. My older dog Asia eats out of her own bowl, but after putting Declan/Helene's bowls down and they ate out of each others bowls, I just decided to observe what they did. Declan/Helene are 15 months/14 months respectively. So about the age of your older puppy. I brought in an 8 week old puppy a few days ago and Mickey Finn eats out of everyone's bowl/plate and none of them seem bothered. They take some of his food as well. Put their food together on a plate or a pan and sit back and watch to see what happens.
About an hour after breakfast I give them all carrots and it's not unusual for two of them to be chewing on the same carrot at the same time, or for them to switch carrots a number of times. Everyone seems to help everyone.

The older puppy will get used to the new puppy, it just takes time.
