Anyone have heart bypass or stents??

So planning ahead, just in case....dr visits after er visit, had heart echo on friday, nuclear stress test scheduled for monday and coronary calcium scan on tues after being referred to heart dr from family dr on wed. So heart dr really didnt say much except get history and order these test and will call and schedule follow up after he gets results.....Been reading a lot and playing the "what if" game......knew I was adopted and biological sister found me 3 years ago and now have family health history...Father had bypass surgery and 11 stents and his brothers all had bypass surgery as well...So it runs in the family.....I know the medical procedures and technology have improved tremendously since my mother had heart surgery in 76 as well as my fathers bypass later in life. But still a lot to think about since I am single and no family here.
Anyone had stents or bypass?? :?: How long were you in hospital, and how long recovery?? :?: I guess I will have to board my children at the vets. Which I feel OK with other than the cost. Geez, I visit so often I feel they are my family. I totally trust either vet to make the right decision should I be incapacitated for a while should any need care. I know all the girls that work there and feel they would take extra good care of my babies. So really the cost is the main thing, but what do you do. Just wondering if anyone out there can give me some info, hope??
Thanks.

I have not had either but my brother had stents and bypass and my dad had bypass. They were in the hospital about 3 days for bypass. Recovery isn't horrible but it isn't a picnic. You need to rest and keep your feet elevated and not climb stairs. The surgeon will eventually recommend cardiac rehab. Do you have anyone (a friend, relative) who can stay with you the first night or two? You shouldn't be alone and the hospital won't let you leave unaccompanied.

I'm not married and have no children. My sister is my only relative and she's 100 miles away. As we all get older, I worry about things like having someone to help in times of need. I feel there should be a social service that can be there to assist after surgery or a procedure. Perhaps a nurse should start this as a business. Certainly would have enough patients.
Sorry I do not have any experience with this type of procedure, but I just wanted to wish you positive thoughts and prayers.

I do agree with Paula...hopefully you can have someone stay with you right after you get out of the hospital or at least check in on you. Best wishes.
Thanks Paula and Barb. I am sure I can find someone to stay with for a few days. :lmt: My niece is about an hour away and I know she would take care of me, just hate to impose on her and the kids. Someone to cook and bring me meals, fluff my pillow, hand me the tv remote....like i said, hate to impose... Thought of a couple of friends close by, but again, hate to impose....so not going to worry about it until the time comes. Did get one test result back, the coronary calcium scan and dr said that was great looking. :yay: Just waiting to hear about the other two. So thanks again for the good thoughts. :)

Don't think of it as imposing. If your family and friends needed you, you would happily help. Give them the same opportunity! I have always found it very touching when people I cared about thought enough of me to ask for my help. When you have recuperated, you can return the favour and do something nice for them.
What a great reply by Kim. She hit the nail on the head with her reply. Friends and family would never consider it as imposing when someone they care for is in need.
HI !

I did have triple bypass a 3 years ago, and is not a picnic like they say but it was not horrible either. I did have some people staying with me for a few days and it was not bad.

All my 7 four legged kids stay here with me and it was not a problem. You will need to stay put and rest , be quite and calm for a few days, I was out from work for 4 weeks but is because I work from home and answer phone so it was not a problem.

I was scared but the doctor explain everything and answer all my questions, so go ahead and ask as many as you need.

Somebody here in the forum explain the surgery to me from the point of view of a cardiac nurse , and I think that was more scary, hehehehe but at the same time help a lot because I knew what to expect and what was going to happen.

Now this days, sometimes they do the surgery with a little cut on your shoulder and sometimes still open you in what the call the "zipper" but depends on what you have, so ask your doctor everything!

Good luck !!
Thanks for the info Monica and glad yours went well. So they sent me a letter saying the doctor did not find anything unusual, which i thought was strange ....and had blood work done to check cholesterol and something else to see if you ever had a heart attack something....last tues. I called the dr office and told them i wanted an appt to talk about what the dr saw and she said they should of made me an appt when i left the first time. I have an appt this coming wed. I want to know why the radiologist pointed out he saw a slightly enlarged heart and what does that exactly mean??? then why did the dr say he say he saw a slight irregularity on my ekg and what does that mean.....Also going to a dr. supervised program earlier that day in the same network to lose weight. They will be able to access all of my records. Thinking the heart dr is going to say need to lose some, i already know that, just have a hard time choosing the right food when i am stressed and tired. Think if i have to report to the dr each month, i might can stay on track. was doing so good until i broke my ankle couple of years ago, then it just went downhill.....
Thank you all for answering and the good thoughts. will update after appt.
