Bad Batch of Food?

I think I may have gotten a bad batch of food for Sam. Something's up. I bought a new bag (same brand and flavor as usual) on the 2nd. We opened it the next day. On the 6th, Sam started having diarrhea. A lot. He went out every hour that night, and continued to have problems all the next day. We did a 24 hour fast, then started him on rice and ground beef. He was doing better. Stools weren't back to being completely firm, but at least it could be cleaned up. I started adding a little of his kibble back into the rice and beef on Thursday night. He had to go out 3 times last night and already a couple times this morning. Could this be a bad batch of food? I hadn't taken him to the vet, because he was still drinking fine and was even playing. Any thoughts? Is there somewhere I could send a sample of the food to have it tested?

Sounds definitely like something is wrong with the food. I would not give him any more out of that bag. Remember some years ago when diamond? had something wrong with their food and a bunch of pets got sick and died. I do not want that to happen to "our" Sam. :D Is there a 800 number on it? Try calling the store you got it from . I bought a bag of science diet some years ago and when I got home and opened it, it had mold in it, took it back and made them open several bags before i got another one with out mold and called the company. they said it had sat at the warehouse to long. yeh, right. You know the companies will change the ingredients and not tell us. I would google complaints about the food too. Your vet may have heard from others about this food as well, so I would probably call them. Hope Sam recovers well and fast. Keep us posted on how he is and what you find out please.
I think that you can get a bad bag. Not necessarily the fault of the manufacturer (although it could be) but sometimes the fault of the store you bought it in for poor storage. Poor Sam! Boiled chicken and rice for our boy!
Usually you can sniff the bag and tell if it is off. If it isn't a brand that turns over quickly, it can get old......or was stored too hot. Toss the bag. Cheaper than running to the vet. Go the no food 24 hours, the come back slowly with a little rice........then add cooked meat to the rice. I also add Silppery Elm Bark, a natural mucus former that coats their intestine........think "internal aloe vera".
Update: After several days of chicken and rice, Sam's tummy still wasn't getting straightened out. :( He wasn't having to go out frequently, but when he did poop, is was still runny with noticeable amounts of mucus. (Sorry if you find that gross. I did too. ) He's still been drinking and playing like normal. That boy can't get enough tug.

I took him to the vet yesterday. Negative for any of the usual suspects they could test for at the office (a sample has been sent to the lab to test for Giardia, etc), but they did say the count for the good bacteria was low. So, in addition to lots of cuddles and kisses, they sent us home with FortiFlora, Metronidazole, Endosorb tabs, and a small bag of food to use when weaning him from the chicken and rice back to his regular food.

We started the meds (and a bit of the GI food with his chicken and rice) last night. No trips outside in the middle of the night. It's a start. Every other time he'd had anything else with the chicken and rice, we'd had at least one trip out during the night. Hopefully this will all get him straightened out. I know he's as tired of having his bum washed as I am washing it.

Also, his weight is down a bit. He hit 80 lbs in the early summer and had stayed there ever since. Yesterday, he weighed 71 lbs. They weighed him 3 times to make sure. Thing is, he hadn't been weighed since September, so I have no idea if the weight loss is from this tummy issue, or just something that has been gradually going on since September. Neither the vet nor I were really worried about it, but I do plan on taking him back after his tummy gets straightened out to keep an eye on it.

Oh, and I emailed the company to see if the formula had changed on the food. They said no, but they are sending me coupons for more food. :)

For anyone who may not have seen the pic on FB, I thought I'd share just how horribly mean the staff is at our vet's office. They clearly hate having Sam there.

Glad he is on his way back and they didn't say, "Fast for 24 and come back with rice and meat......" You had already done that so time for step 2. One thought, could he be sensitive to chicken? Might be something to watch in the future.
The vet just called. All the lab tests came back negative, so the cause of the initial tummy issues will remain a mystery. But, hopefully, once we get everything settled back down and back in balance, he'll be all better. :)

I generally avoid giving him chicken (or foods with it as an ingredient), not because he seems to have a problem with it, but just because I know so many dogs have a sensitivity to it. I figure with his already sensitive system, it wouldn't hurt to steer clear of it. He gets it occasionally and doesn't have any problems. I did rice and beef part of the week, but ran out of beef, so I switched to chicken for the last couple of days. He didn't have any more/less problems with it. Go figure. He couldn't have issues that are that easy to figure out.
rice????   Hope it's not giardia and these meds solve is issue.
Awww--poor Sam. :ghug:

Sounds like you have all good news on the tests.

Hope all is back to normal in the next few days.
I would take the bag of food back to where I bought it and get a different brand this time. They may have had a whole batch of bad food. One time I opened the dog food and none of them would eat it. I packed it back up and took it back to the store and told them there is something wrong with this bag because all had turned it away. I bought a different brand for that trip.
Sorrrrrry but the pic is so adorable!!! He looks wider than the both of them put together! I have always done the beef....as for dog food, my food store is always running out of mine so I am fairly certain I am getting a fresh (I guess) bag. I dump it out of the bag into another sealable container because I'm afraid of rodents so I'm always smelling and seeing the entire contents. I could tell one time a smaller bad I got to make due until a larger bag came in did have a funk about it. I dumped the whole thing back out and got another bag. It just smelled off. I guess you never know how many trucks it took to get to the store. Or like you are thinking they never think to mention to the consumer when they decide to change the ingredients! Poor baby and you , I hope he feels better soon!
