Kitchen update

I need to vent. In the scheme of life this is nothing, not even a blip. I ordered kitchen cabinets and countertops in October. The countertops won't be installed for 7-10 days after the cabinets. Fine, I accepted that and got used to the idea of eating off paper plates and doing dishes in the powder room. I just learned that the cabinets will be delivered to my house Friday the 5th, but won't be installed until Monday the 8th, so they spend the weekend in my garage and my car will be outside. I asked if it will take more than one day to install and basically got laughed at. My kitchen is small! I was told it could take up to 3 days. The countertops may not be installed by Christmas Eve either! This is chapping my hide but there is nothing I can do. Honestly, if I knew it would take this long I would have waiting until after the first of the year. Because of the configuration of my condo, I can only put up minimal Christmas decorations--usually I go full-tilt boogie on the decos. I'm just annoyed and am going to pout the rest of the day. :(

Yeah, but you'll love it when it's done! Nothing in remodeling goes as planned.
Vent all you want. I can sympathize. We had our small master bath partially redone last year. It was supposed to take a week. The first guy (yes, I said "first") shows up on Monday and informs me halfway through the day that he doesn't work on Fridays. Then Tuesday morning, after showing up late, he informs me that he has to take his daughter and grandson to the doctor on Thursday morning, but should be back before lunch time. He never showed. :? Cue the first call to the company owner/manager. He finally "finished" the room after 3 weeks. It was horrible! Before my husband could place the second call to the owner, some of the flooring was already coming up. The tub and tile were not sealed/waterproofed, which is more frustrating since we were having the room redone because of water damage. :headbang: The owner sends a second guy who says the other guys work is so bad it has to be ripped out and started over. My apologies to those in the neighboring county who heard me screaming. Oh, and the correct size tub is a special order and he can't start until it comes in. Yada, yada. After he finishes, the bathroom looks great...but. Grout is missing between several of the floor tiles. Water in shower only gets lukewarm at best, etc. The owner finally came out and fixed everything himself and even told me to pick a paint color and he would paint the room for free (walls had not been part of the deal). The first guy had been fired, and his last 4 jobs were in the process of being redone at the company's expense. The second guy had left to start his own business. And I will probably never have the courage to find a contractor to redo the other bathroom and kitchen.

Sorry for hijacking your rant.
Vent away! Remodeling is definitely frustrating. But I'm sure the end result will be worth it.

Our neighbor is currently getting a new roof and all new siding. I have a wonderful view of the (cough cough) "workers" through my office window. It took them 6 days to do the roof. (I helped a friend do his, with a steep pitch and gables, and it took 2 days.)

They are now on day 4 of the siding. They started with the shortest wall, which happens to face our house. Today they made the most progress of all - a whole 2-1/2 rows of siding went up, and they've finally reached the top of the doorway. (I can't wait to see what happens when they have to start using ladders. 8O )

Of course, if your guys show up at 10 am, take a 2 hour lunch, and quit for the day at 3 pm, it very well may take as long as our poor neighbor. I do feel sorry for her . . . but I still get a good laugh watching the show!
Oh yes I can hi-jack your rant too! I being the type A over achieving scheduler I am planned to get all the construction on my house taken care of before I moved my family in! BLAAAHHAAAA!!!! I have been here almost 2 years and not a 2 week span has gone by without some type of maintenance person being here! I have fired people, ripped out sinks, drywall, tile, yelled, thrown things. People have stolen my money, lied and like you said for the most part there is nothing you can do so you just deal. (pout) The part I really don't like is having all the different people in and out and I am single and not that being 6ft tall would help a ton but I am little. This is where Skye the herding dog comes in.... It is so funny to the kids and I because we know her but to strangers oh geez - Strangers are always scared of her. Her facial expressions are serious I guess and she has a deep bark. She runs circles around my house, not the person per-say and her blue eyes always throw people for a loop. She holds her head and shoulders very low to the ground and I suppose the St. Bernard in her does make her protective. The more people try to interact with her the stronger she goes at it and I let her and tell them SHE BITES! Haha, try walking through my door unannounced now! For some reason no one ever notices she is wagging her tail the entire time! My kids laugh and so do I and the strangers always stay on guard. GOOD!

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this....I think it is in the international construction workers code of conduct to work 12 minutes a day and lie through the 3 teeth they do have. After they are done expecting you to sit on your butt and wait for them to show up for whenever that 12 minutes might be they are exhausted and need to go rest up for the following day. If I have offended anyone I with all my heart apologize, if you or your husband is the one who doesn't match this criteria PLEASE send me your info! Maybe just maybe they will see how much effort you are putting into decorating the rest of your house and they will put a rush on it just to get it done. The Christmas spirit can effect people in all kinds of ways.
It is tough during a remodel the waiting and more waiting. Cross fingers most will be done before Christmas and all will be completed soon. Good luck, I'm sure it will be beautiful.
I realized what the underlying issues are. First, lack of communication. I wasn't told that the cabinets would be delivered by the manufacturer to my house before installation. I assumed the installers would bring them. I wasn't told it would take 3 days to install 10 cabinets in a small kitchen. I cannot complain YET about the workmanship, but I went with this local business because they have a great reputation. Second, and most important, is that I wanted this done by Christmas so my Christmas would be perfect. Last year at this time my brother Steven had died, my brother Brian was in hospice and discharged from hospice 2 days before Christmas, only to go to a skilled nursing facility and die 5 days later, and my beloved Bob had to be PTS. I wanted this holiday to be perfect so that I could start fresh. I just feel so unsettled with having all my dishes stacked on the dining room table, all the cups and glasses on the buffet and all the post and pans in bags and boxes in the garage and throughout my condo. I've never done a project like this on my own so didn't realize what it all entailed.
But they always expect payment immediately after the work is finished, even though they took their time. Hold $$$ back until you fully inspect everything and the job is completed to your complete satisfaction.
I have had a problem with the heat in my van and has been going on for weeks. When it was supposedly finished, I paid the balance. It has been in 6 times and still not right. I had a 'dispute put on my debit card ant the money came back into my account. Not a penny more until it is done and correctly.
Don't let them take advantage of you. I get cranky when I feel taken advantage of. I know noses will be out of joint for this comment but it wouldn't happen if I were a man. (most of the time, not always)
Paula, I am sorry. I know what you mean about trying to make this a better holiday. Not that I went through anything like you did last year.

In 2010 it was a wonderful Christmas. The boys made it home the night before we got a heavy snowfall on the 24th. Because of icy conditions that hit before the snow a lot of people were homebound. We stayed in the house watching the snow fall while we played games and watched movies. It was delightful. Little did I know that it would be our last stress free Christmas for a while.

The next year I broke my ankle, in 2012 I injured my neck (or so I thought) and was in a ton of pain plus Tim's mom was died right before Christmas, last year I was determined to have a nice Christmas and my neck and shoulder flared up again. I have foraminal stenosis, a rotator cuff impingement and arthritis. So while it flairs with stress it also flairs with certain activities. So I can't play card games or do puzzles with the boys like we love to do - or at least in moderation. I don't do moderation well. This year my parents are going through their move. So I have resolved myself that this is going to be different.

That being said there is a lot to be grateful for. So go ahead and pout (Santa won't care) and try to find some humor in the situation where you can. After all laughter goes a long way towards making things better.

:santa:
