Should a dental be done if MDR-1 status is unknown?

Zeke is scheduled to have his teeth cleaned next Monday.
But I never had the MDR-1 test done (I know, bad father  )

Is it OK to have this done even though we have no idea what his MDR-1 gene status is?

Chances are low he has the MDR-1 gene. % are low for OES, thankfully. Discuss options with vet. We had Kdog tested before her heartworm treatment and she was negative.
MDR-1 is a pretty easy test to get done; why not look into it, so you'll know for the future?

I agree whole heartedly.

I just don't think I could get an answer before Monday morning.

Nope, Univ. of Washington, the lab that does them only runs them on Monday so they have to be in the lab by Friday, Thursday better. Must be sent priority.......Oh the runaround I got from shipper (UPS OR USPS OR ?) They didn't believe the address, said they needed a street address tho the lab doesn't have one. The were worried about "bio sample." Yea gads! Took two trips and calls to the lab to convince the shipper it was for real.
My vet said that in OES, less than 5% of dogs are carriers of the mutation. And even less than that have the actual mutation. So the likelihood of him having it is extremely low.
But, out of abundance of caution, she will treat him as if he does have the mutation. Just to be on the safe side.
And he was knocked out before when he was neutered. So, that's something.

I guess we can't get better than that short of doing the test, which can't be done before Monday.

I will send away for the test right away.
Dropped him off this morning.

Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly.
Zeke is home.
A little groggy and whine-y.

Vet said he did great.

She sent a blood sample for a wisdom panel. This will check for the MDR-1 mutation and other genetic issues.

Another big bill.
FINALLY got his MDR-1 results back.

He does not have the mutation nor is he a carrier of the mutation.

Good to know that's something I don't have to worry about.
Good to know but wondering why it took so long :cow: I sent ours with the return info sent to Kensie's vet. Maybe that hurried it up.
Glad he does not have it. :clappurple: But does it normally take months to get results? Just asking because I want to get Tinsley spayed and was thinking of getting that test done after reading about it.
His vet took the blood sample on 11/24 and sent it right out via FedEx. FedEx's regional facility is in Buffalo. Remember Buffalo was buried in 8 feet of snow at this time.
His sample sat in that facility for days, maybe longer because nothing was going into or coming out of the area.
When the sample finally did get to the lab, who knows how long it sat there.
Then, when the lab was ready to work with it, it was a bad sample because of its age.

So he had another sample drawn on 12/29.

Quite frankly, I forgot about until last week. I called the vet and asked if they ever got results. She didn't know but said she would find out.
And then I finally got the results a couple days ago.
