Never experienced this

Hi all. I know I have been asking lots of questions lately but I'm new to being a OES mommy. Anyway, my 3 month old pooch won't come when I call her. She will look at me and stay put or lie down. She almost gives me a leave me alone look. She doesn't seem very loving either. I have owned a few dogs through my life and have never experienced a dog like this. She will let me hold her and pet her but I always have to physically have to go and pick her up. I won't be able to do this for long because she is getting big pretty quick. Is this a common personality trait or is my dog just willful? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello. We are on our 4th old English (first with a tail) and they have all been very loving. Our last one, Fred was very stubborn as he got to around 6 months- he decided he didn't want to be brushed but I had different ideas and it was a battle of wills but I won with kind words, soothing sounds, lots of kisses and a good treat after. When they were tiny babies I used to spend lots of time sitting on the floor playing, brushing and just general cuddling, was me that sneaked down in the night when they cried and slept on the floor-hadn't meant to but I just went to sleep and pup snuggled up to me. So I guess I was a daft, soft, mum but did have discipline as in toileting out the back, sitting for meals and we did a lot of saying his name and calling to us for a hug and a kiss so they got to know their name. xx :wag: :tea:  xx
First, I must stress that you make sure she can hear you. Is she at least tilting her head or opening her eyes or acknowledging you in some way? Next, if it helps Steel does the same thing to me alllllll the time! The ignoring thing. He will come to me full speed if he hears the ice machine on my refrigerator activate because he loves ice! Try training a dog to come using ice! Haha! I put the leash on him and with treats - several times a day - gently pull, say "Steel come" and when he finally does he gets a cube from the bowl.
As for the affectionate part he kind of picks and chooses that. He is a big kisser but doesn't snuggle a bunch. He is a very warm boy so he likes the wood or ceramic floor. Us people like warm fuzzy blankets. He flops on us for short spurts, slobbers on us and then retreats to the floor. I have another dog (Sonny) who is happiest in your face, on top of you, snuggling even when your trying to go to the bathroom. She isn't leaving the room to get away from you is she? She is most likely just warm and you are used to dogs who are the sit in your lap kind. She still needs your touch and your affection/attention, just in a different way.
three months is still very young. And don't forget- this breed can be a bit stubborn. Keep treats in your pocket and call her randomly through the day, and treat her when she shows up. You'll find she comes quickly before you know it!

As for snuggling- ours were very "hands off!" when they were little. Even now, they'll snuggle a bit, and then move on. I think they get too warm for long cuddling. Which isn't to say they aren't always under foot, or lying right by my chair, or forcing their way into the bathroom to be closer to me. They just may not be in your lap as much as you might expect.
Yes!!!! She is exactly like what you all are describing. I know she can hear because when I grab a treat bag she'll coming running. I will call her and she just looks at me and flops her head back down. I also find that she is a very lazy dog. She will run after a ball when I throw it....she will even bring it back to me. With that being said, she will only play fetch 3 times at the most. Then she flops back down. She likes to be alone a lot too. I have a big family and we all hang out in my bedroom watching movies or playing video games. She will come in, get a pat from everyone and walk out back to the cool kitchen floor. She reminds me of a very old dog and I'm not being hit with that puppy energy. There is this video on YouTube which reminds me of my pup....this is the perfect example of how she is.

Retrievers they are not. None of mine ....save one....would bring the ball back more than 2 or 3 times. After than we were "told," you threw it you go get it.

I too was worried about hearing, glad to hear the treat bag will "wake the dead."

All her puppy bounce may have drained out with initial owners and she doesn't realize you actually want a peppy puppy. Does she ever get into hyper puppy mode? Here all I have to say is "outside" and the mouth starts barking big time, "Open the door!!!!!"

Adorable couch sleeper. With cooler weather try walks, chance of scenery to help perk up interest. Also time to start picking up hair in front. Sheepdogs react to movement, if they can see it.

Thanks for your reply.....but the youtube dog is not mine. I posted it as an example of my puppy. She does get more alert when we are outside and she LOVES to play the growling and barking game with me. I bark,....she barks back and howls and growls. It so cute. My pups eyes are kept nice and trimmed as you can see in her Halloween collar pic lol

our girls went through a phase where they'd fetch. Now they'd rather I throw it, they chase it, and then I have to go and get it so I can throw it again. as SheepieBoss said, retrievers they are not!

If she has been re-homed and you are her second family, she may just be a bit out of sorts. Also, 3 months is a bit young for free range, in my opinion. Our girls weren't allowed to roam the house until I was 100% sure that they wouldn't potty indoors, and that they wouldn't chew anything that could be dangerous (like wires) or valuable (like shoes). So they had crate time at night, and during the day they were limited to a very large kitchen by baby gates. Little by little that expanded to include rooms we felt they could be trusted in, always adjacent to the kitchen. Your puppy's appearance of disinterest might be instead that she has so much competing for her attention. A whole house for her to explore isn't going to get dull quickly.
She has adorable pink eye........cute in pups but in an older dog, not so much. MO had one pink eye, called it the Pig's Eye. Still was a GREAT dog if a curious excuse for a sheepdog. Good to hear Pinky has sassy sheepdog in her!! What a kissable nose!! Pink and orange, a colorful Halloween color combo. Jester collar is perfect.

I was wondering what happened --total black nose ..thought light angle or something and that couch potato was too big...and a tail.
She is young but try to get her into a good puppy class as soon as possible. This will really help you learn what needs to be done to make her a better behaved dog. She still has a long way to grow so imagine keeping a dog at least twice that size under control when her craziness level goes through the roof Believe me, unless there are medical reasons, she will eventually go through a crazy stage. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
Also, be careful what you do to reinforce certain behaviors. Some, such as howling, barking and jumping, can be cute as a puppy but as a dog grows it becomes a real pain to correct. Best to start out right. The greatest benefit from training is all that WE learned as dog owners, much more so than what our dogs learned but we now have the knowledge to progress. Clicker training and positive reinforcement worked miracles for us and our dogs! :go:
Sheepdog crazy state...... :twitch: :twitch: ......most pups go thru it, this guys do it with gusto. But an in charge owner will hardly bat an eye. In--charge--is the key.

As much socialization, controlled socialization you can manage, the better manners she will have for the public and better control you'll have of her if problems suddenly occur.
What a very kissable nose-makes me want to just pick up, hug and kiss!!! All dogs/pups are different although may have the same "antics". We can't really compare. As long as can hear/see you then the call/treat works very well-mostly!!xx :wag: :tea: :crossed:
Thank you for all the great advice on this subject. I have been doing a bunch of reading about this breed of dog and I guess I will see what plays out. She is the best dog though just not what I'm used to in comparing her with other puppy experiences. I guess its safe to say I have a very unique pup!
That puppy on Youtube made me laugh, how cool and laid back. Your pup sounds more like our newfy, he will just lie there when you ask him to do something, but comes running like lightening when the fridge door opens. We have a saying that "Its all about Buster" He really only comes to us when he wants something

Sounds like she is just laid back and does what she wants.

Monty was more interested in our Newfy and outdoors at 3 months and not so much with us but that has changed now he is older and is much more affectionate now, so she might become more affectionate when she gets older.
