Anyone give Allegra/Fexofenadine to their OES for allergies?

Our poor Sheepies and their allergies! Merlin has seasonal as well as food allergies and has done better since we switched to a grain-free diet. But he continues to have red, watery eyes and itchy paws, elbows and face - especially after spending time in the yard. Currently we give Benedryl at night, but the poor baby seems so drugged! And Benedryl only works for a few hours anyway, so I don't want to give it during the day because he seems pretty miserable on it. Same with chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), although I think the drowsiness is a *bit* less.

He is also on a fish oil supplement and it helps if we bathe him about every two weeks so the pollen and stuff gets washed off. But I am seeing that a lot of folks are giving their pups 2nd gen antihistamines (Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra) for allergies with good success. If I were to choose one of these I would choose Allegra as I myself have been on all three of these and Allegra seems to have fewer side-effects (at least for humans) - less dry mouth, no noticeable drowsiness, etc. Also, Allegra is usually the choice for humans whose allergies affect the skin (i.e., causing hives and itchiness).

Has anyone had success with their sensitive Sheepie with one of these OTC drugs?

I'd aks your vet for their advice. My girls get mild season allergies, and I occasionally give them Benadryl on the advice of my vet. But it doens't do anything to make them sleepy or drugged. What dosage are yo giving- maybe its too large?
I sent an e-mail tot he vet this morning also. She says Allegra has doesn't have as much evidence behind it for animal use. Although it has very low toxicity, dosage and efficacy have not been very well studied. She suggested trying giving Zyrtec once daily, so we will try that.

The dose of benedryl the vet advised is 1 mg per lb of body weight. He is 90lbs and I only give him 50 mg. It does work well to control itchiness, just not for very long, and I think he's super sensitive to it's sedative effects. Our vet was aslo the one to point us toward the chlorpheniramine as something that might be less sedating, but he seems pretty drowsy on that one too. Pups and people are all different - benedryl knocks me out cold and gives me a "hangover" feeling after, but my husband has no problem taking it during the day. I also got SUPER loopy on Zyrtec for the first few days I took it (which is apparently fairly unusual), so I'm curious to see how Merlin reacts to it. We're going to start the Zyrtec tonight (nighttime in case he does feel loopy) and see how it goes. It's a 24 hr pill, so hopefully we will see less itchiness and red eyes!
