Poppy's First Visit

My husband and I are looking into getting a puppy from a very reputable breeder in our area. She is bringing one of her puppies to our house to visit us before we make our decision if Poppy will be a good fit.
My question is....does anyone out there have any experience with OES and children with CP? I have a 6 year old son with CP and the puppy that Sandra is bringing over is 8 months old.
We've already established that Matthew loves dogs (my parents have Huskies), so we're not worried about him, we're more concerned about how an OES will respond to coming into a house where there is already a child.
In addition, we don't have a conventional fence around our house. The previous owner installed an invisible fence, as he had 3 dogs. Does anybody have any experience with this and OES? Does it work with them (with proper training, of course)?
Any input would be very helpful. We've been reading this Forum for the last year as a visitor and you have a wonderful community here. I'm so glad that I decided to finally join.

Welcome to the forum! :)
At 8 months, Sandra has likely assesed his temperment quite well, and wouldn't likely recommend the dog for you if she didn't think he was going to be good with kids. As always though, never leave any dog alone with any child, you just never know.
In regards to the invisibile fence, I believe your dog would have to wear a collar that is tuned to the frequency of that fence, so you may have to look into whether that's possible. I know they do NOT work for many dogs, they get zapped going through it and don't come back. I would not let him out off leash or unattended anyway.
Hi, I've written before on this forum about how much I love the invisible fence (Invisible Fence Brand) if you want to do a search but I have to share a story anonymously tonight because of the potential "what ifs".

My husband & I were out for 3.5 hours tonight starting at 7pm. We live on a corner property on a neighborhood street and are a couple of blocks from a river so sometimes the kids blow down the street to get the the riverbank. Well we accidentally left this one door open in the back of our house. It was dark when we arrived home and we pulled around the corner and there's our dog out in our yard running to meet our car. He didn't have a collar on, because in the house, we keep it off to keep the mats down. I was horrified to see him out there but so thankful that even without the shock collar he knew not to leave his yard. We have many temptations with people & dogs walking by plus strangers are always pulling over in their car trying to get his attention because he looks like such a stuffed animal.

As I mentioned we use the "Invisible Fence" Canine Fence brand version which is more expensive than the "do it yourself" kits that you buy in a store. I think that it has worked so well for us because we started our boy on it when he was about 16 weeks. We recently adopted an older dog, but the training hasn't quite clicked as well but the new dog hates going outside so that has worked in our favor.

I still don't recommend leaving your dog out unattended. I worry more about someone either stealing him or think that he's lost and taking him than I worry about him just leaving the property.

So a big WHEW!! for us tonight and I was never so happy to see our dog in my life. You can be sure that we will develop OCD about not leaving that door open again!
