Lovely, but odd behavior .

Hi all. My Pirate is almost 11, and we have always been extremely close. He has been having problems with his back end for over a year, having a hard time getting up. It seems to be progressing . He now is having problems on the stairs. When he is going up, his rear legs sometimes give out, so I always make sure I'm behind him,,,sweet talking him, as he is my lovie. For the past week or two, he is so devoted and velcroed to me. Much more than usual. I'm really scared that he is "telling" me something. What do you think is going on? Maybe I'm overly sensitive .

A bit more pain. Might be time for a vet visit to see if he has a UTI or something. How are his teeth? Also failing hearing or eyesight brings them in a bit closer.
Deb, so sorry to hear about Pirate. Hugs to you and Tony!

We are going through the exact same thing with Oscar. I just bought him a lift harness, one that he can wear during the day so that we can assist him when he gets stuck. It is expensive, but after my research, seemed to be the best fit for us.

It should be arriving this week.

As far as the stairs go, I now have to limit Oscar to going up and down once a day. He comes down in the morning, and goes up at night. Otherwise, I make him stay on the first floor, or he gets so worn out that he can't come up at night. :(

Have you tried any anti-inflammatories, like Rimadyl or Dermaxx? Oscar can't take them because he is on prednisone for his auto-immune disorder, but maybe they would help Pirate. If you do give him an anti-inflammatory, don't forget to add famotidine (generic Pepcid AC - really inexpensive at Sam's Club), as it will protect his tummy from the meds.

I know that Pirate is a big boy, just like Oscar, which makes it really difficult to help them get around. Oscar used to walk miles and miles. Now I can't get him around the block.

I am dreading winter. Last year took a huge toll on my boy.

These old guys break my heart.

Laurie and Oscar
Laurie, we never ever really believed they get old, did we?
Indeed, the older ones are dear and try so hard, yet they rarely complain. We could learn a lot from them.
