There's something about SALLY

Just an update on my sweet Sally, the 105 pound rescue dog we adopted last week.

We still have to work on her "diving" in the fish pond, and EGADS!!! diving into 4 ft tall hedges so that all her legs flail and move as if she's swimming! Never seen a dog purposely do this. I had to rescue her twice as she slowly sank into the hedges and then whined for help. Merlin continues to bark bark bark at her misdoings but is quiet when she behaves as she's supposed to.

On more positive notes: She travels really well as I took her out in my vehicle yesterday - first to the vets office for a meet and greet with the staff who all loved her. Next, it was to my favorite pet supply place where they fitted her with a harness and gave her lots of treats. All the staff there loved her big goofy nature.

She can sit, lay down and Yippiiiiiii has good manners in the kitchen as so far she hasn't begged, or been annoying when food is being prepared. She lays down and waits for her breakfast or dinner.

So glad things are going well except for the poor fish....Sounds like she is just a big sweetie pie. How are her and Merlin getting along? Other than when he fusses at her.
Are they playing well together? Your vet said she looked good. Do you know how old she is? Did they give you an idea of what mix they thought she was? Keep us updated and pic are so great to see.
At a 105 lbs one would discount springer spaniel as her other half. If a bit of brown I'd think Bernese. Have to get a genetic test on this goofy girl.
Sally was originally owned by a 90 yr old woman who allowed her to roam the town freely. The townspeople liked her well enough but complained about her lack of supervision and the Pullman Humane Society had to visit several times to convince the owner to sign her over. She said it was God's will that Sally roam but then agreed that it was also God's will that would allow her to find a new owner.

Sally was at the shelter for several months and it was obvious she was a staff favorite. They taught her to walk on a leash using a gentle leader and how to sit and lay down. She was adopted twice and returned , the last person only had her for a 1 1/2 wks and claimed her return was "unruly behavior".

The shelter believed her mix was Great Pyranees due to her size but as they are white and not black I am pretty sure the mix is Newfie. Her head is massive and you could swear you are looking at a St. Bernard at times who originated from Newfounder dogs. Newfie's love the water and have a gentle nature and most have black coats but some are black and white.

I asked the vet office if they do DNA testing but they said they didn't although the staff recommended I could purchase an online kit but they were known not to be that reliable. Anyone have any experience doing the test?

Sally didn't see my vet as she just had a complete test done by the University of Washington Health Sciences staff last Thursday. I just was going to pick up Merlin's Deramax which he just started 2 wks ago (he'll need it with all the running he's doing lately) and brought Sally with me for a meet and greet with the staff. I let her wander around and get used to the place and use their scale so that the experience was positive. 4 staff members were there to greet her and give her treats so she'll see it as a fun place next time we visit for an appointment. Then we headed to the Pet supply store and did the same thing. She was extremely friendly with the staff and allowed them to try different harnesses on her.

Merlin plays/chase with her but she can run circles around him. My boy is slowing down. He does bark a lot at her when she does something wrong. Sally is a little too interested in the cats which is discouraging as even the old cat that ignored her got a bit overwhelmed at her playfullness and Merlin was really peeved (I was pretty sure that would happen should she attempt or perceive to attempt to harass the cats). He did go after her and she immediately backed down. The majority of the cats are indoors in a huge foster cat room with an enclosed outdoor area so they are okay. I also replaced the baby gate at the top of the stairs as she has no access to their food or sleeping areas. However, I have 4 cats (2 semi-ferals) that are outdoors and have placed Sally on a leash when we are in that area. She whines and does the play/bow so her actions aren't aggressive but I can see this will take time which I view as the #1 priority.

Whew. apologies for the long ramble.

Cheers

Oh blah can't correct my spelling mistake as I wasn't logged on in the previous post. Should read Newfoundlander.

So great that she's settling in so quickly! Sounds like she really just needs enough time to learn the house rules (and Merlin will definitely keep on her for that!)

:ghug: Congratulations!
I am glad she is with you since the other two times she was adopted didn't work out. Sometimes you have to work at things right. I'm sure the old woman thought she was giving her a good life but imagine all the horrors that could have happened, she did the right thing in the end.

I think the Newfi and OES are a great combination. Every Newfi I have come in contact with was a big, goofy, loving dog.
What an interesting story on her background. Thanks for sharing..Bet she in gonna have a blast when it snows. Glad she is listening to Merlin. Mine likes to play with the kitties too. Not aggressive, just the play bow and a bark. Some ignore her, one kinda plays by weaving in and out around the table then up on the couch. Then kitties are washed down with kisses. All I have to say is "Be nice" and Tinsley knows what that means and settles down. I wake up and we are all sleeping together. :hearts:
Pyrs come colored as well, up to 49% colored but rare. Friend had one 49% brown and biscuit. Of course grey heads are common, I think of the 7 we've had, all but 2 had grey markings on their head and ears. Sally's dark color would also make me think Landseer Newf and could explain the fixation for water and swimming thru the hedges

Dang, I think I have (more likely had) a test kit for genetic testing. You order the kit, swab their cheek, and wait for the surprise results. That's how we found out Harry was part OES and part coonhound :hearts:
Her antics sound quite funny as long as she doesn't hurt herself, it will be a bit of work keeping an eye on her and controlling her craziness until she calms down.
Buster our Newfy was a right goof ball until 2 and if he wanted to do something he would just go off and do it so we had to be vigilant.
For instance we were walking in a big open field and some distance away is a ravine with a stream running through it. We were happily walking along and suddenly Buster took of, legs flailing and no amount of calling him stopped him in his objective. Of course we knew where he was going, five minutes later we got to the stream and there he was standing in the middle of it wagging his tail.
There is a singleminded aspect with the Newfy breed but when they get older it happens less often and you also learn to anticipate such antics lol.
Buster!!
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Sally is part Newfie. As Tanya mentioned they can be quite headstrong when they are younger... I remember all too well when our "little houdini" would get out and we'd be calling and rattling a bag of her favorite treats and she'd look at us as if we were from another planet--she had things to do or go see afterall. Oh, did that girl ever love water, be it a rain puddle or a bath it was water and that was all that mattered to her. At least that was my experience with the girl we had until this Jan when she passed at 12 years of age. She was a wonderful pet keep working with Sally and you will be rewarded many times over. In the states the recognized colors for Newfoundlands are: black, brown (the color my girl was), gray and Landseer (black and white). Now saying this there are also brown and white, gray and white and I've heard of cream colored newfs as well but these coat colors are not recognized for the AKC conformation ring they can be registered if memory is correct but not shown. No matter what Sally's genetic makeup is, enjoy!
:phew: :phew: Boy, glad our Newf, Abbott, came with a couple of years on him. He was found walking the streets in Denver on New Year's Eve and "offered a ride" by a relative. When no owner could be found, we were contacted, "Do you want Newfoundland?" What a silly question!!!! We drove up the next day. Apparently is walk about took most of the wanderlust from him, but he was a major fence climber for the first year, visiting neighbors. Time...and an electrified fence...solved that. He came down with lymphoma years later. He never liked water..........a Desert Newf
I really, really, really want to see Sally hedge swimming. :plead:

Video??
she reminds me of my friends lansceer newfie.. they are so sweet .. keep us posted
Sally sounds like a wonderful dog. I'm sure she's very happy at your place. Looking forward to hearing More stories about Sally the rambler.
I just love it! I can't wait to hear more about sally and her antics. She sounds like so much fun.
Thanks for all the info everyone as I'm finding it very helpful and I appreciated the time you took to post.

Cheers
Marianne
