10wk old Steel and crate

I'm not sure how to handle this and I don't want to make an error I end up paying for later....Advice please! Steel is 100% crate trained in the regard that he is silent while in there. He is 100% crate trained in the regard that if left in there for 2 hours or less it is dry. Here is my problem and I will try to make this as short as possible and still try to give you all the info you need to give me an informed response... My other dogs are trained to bark when they hear a noise - Steel is learning this. (Good) I calm everyone tell him hush and good boy, go night night. He does. Any other time if he talks, I tell him "no" and he stops immediately. I am afraid he is afraid to tell me when he has to go potty. Normal nighttime is bed near 9, I take him out at 1. Back in the crate, out at 4. I have towels in the crate as opposed to any kind of bedding for now and I wash them every night just in case there was an accident I missed and the towels soaked it up. The breeder suggested I leave the divider out, she said a puppy's bladder can only hold for so long and if you force them to lay in it you are doing more damage than if you allow them to say p-p in a corner and at least move away. Made sense to me. So, for the last 2 mornings my very structured lil man has barked at 12:30am. I told him "no" because I didn't want him to think I was getting him out of the crate because he was whining BUT I KNEW HE HAD TO POTTY!!! I waited 3 sec. flew out of bed with visions of a full crate of "gifts" waiting for me and there was my precious wiggling doing the potty dance! The only thing there was a little turdlette he probably forced out the front of the crate when he barked. (he very rarely barks). He is doing sooo good, he doesn't potty in the house, I think he was trying to hold it in the crate. He is so young and things are going so well. I would just hate to have him think I'm pulling him out because he is crying but I really don't want to ruin the point of the crate with potty training or any other purpose either! AHHHH! He has just been such a joy, I don't want to wreck this! He is smart but I don't think I can sit him down and say ok handsome you can whine for mom a little when you have to potty but that's it alright?! I have no recall with my other 2 dogs - for another post but Skye has the Australian Shepherd in her - She just let herself out of her crate and Sonny despised his crate.

He can't read the clock. He goes by feeling. If he barks, take him out. It is not a play time, he goes out, does or does not do his business, no extra activities and back into the crate. Don't let him think his bark mean play time. Dogs tend to be nocturnal, so you have to counter this.

Yes, put the partition in there. He doesn't want to soil his bed and will be forced to hold it. BUT......he's only 10 weeks. Cut the guy some slack. Males in particular are slower to potty train, so be patient but consistent.

Those with more recent potty training young males should chime in here as well.
Exactly what Sheepieboss said. We took Charm outside every 2 hrs at night in the beginning, she was Steele's age. If she cried before time, she went out. This lasted 2-3 weeks.

She went outside every hour during the day. It is purposeful even during the day. No play, just business

Withhold his water at bedtime, we cut Charm off around an hour before bed, that helps.

Treats and huge party for going potty every time. They soon learn how to make you do the happy dance on your front lawn at 3 am :clappurple:
Ditto all of the above. Going out to potty in the middle of the night is an "all business" trip. Go outside, pee/poo, back in the crate. The barking stops as soon as you get up to take care of business. Besides, if he has to go and you're asleep, there's really no other way he can get your attention, is there?

We got Benson at 8 weeks old, and I had the alarm set for every 2 hours overnight. Every week I increased the timing just a little. At 10 weeks old, she was going out every 3 hours at most, still on my alarm.
Thank Youuuuuu! We are doing everything you said except I am making him wait too long! He just seemed to be doing fine so I was kind of going with it. Poor lil babe was afraid to talk probably. I swear I don't beat him or yell!!!! When I do try to use my man voice he just wags his tail at me....remember he has a tail? He is such a great boy and he is doing so fantastic I just didn't want to make an error. He really doesn't care to much monkey around after he goes potty, he WANTS to come back inside and he actually doesn't mind going back into the crate. He snuggles in. I have it set next to an air duct that blows his hair if he wants and he can see myself and the other dogs in bed. He is only in the crate at length at night....The rest of the times are ex: while I'm vacuuming because he tried to ride on top of it.... while I'm in the shower bathing another dog because I can't watch him. He isn't in there very long is my point so he doesn't have to really associate it with dislike. So am I dumb to think he is really getting the hang of the potty training this soon or is it just me being on top of it? He used to just stand up and go. Now I can tell he is holding it and he is obviously holding it in the crate. Yes, I take him out what feels like constantly but I just love, love, love that he is so predictable. I can set my watch by his poo-poo's. I just am so glad that in less than 24hrs I had people who have lived this to rely on - thank you so much! Now when I'm done beating myself up for making him hold it for so long - No wonder he shot a turdlette out the front of the crate at me, he was about to explode! During the day he goes out by what he is doing...after play, 10 minutes after eating, an hour after that for another poo, after a nap. Those naps are 2-3 hours long sometimes if he has a snuggle buddy. Sorry I'm babbling, just wanted you to understand the nighttime was a little tricky to figure out as the daytime isn't by the hour it's by the activity. Thank you so much again!
Good morning lovely wonderful intelligent people!!!!!!!! Just a I will try to keep it short update....I wanted to make sure it happened 2 nights in a row before I said anything! Hehe. I backed everything up as you said so my baby wasn't having to hold it so long. In fact the first night my mom clock just woke me up so I snuck out of the bedroom and waited to see if he "said" anything. He didn't so I woke him up. I felt really bad doing that for a quick second but OHHHH I love his tail! He was beating me with it and showering me with kisses so out to potty and back into a clean crate! Now this I know FOR SURE even though the downy smelling towels could possibly soak up an accident I can't feel or smell there was only one small peep out of him right after he went in and that was it - he slept the whole time and it was exactly the same for the second 1/2 of the night. Night 2 was almost the same except I actually slept and when I heard the bell on his collar start to jingle I got up and got him out. It was actually a 1/2 hr. early but he was shuffling around so he must have been starting to get uncomfortable - Again, sleepy baby, clean crate, happy tail and kisses! Thank you all so much - so much! I wish I had you when my other 2 were babes!
