Buster is here!

Hello everyone,

We picked up Buster on july 3rd, 2014. Buster is 14 weeks old now. I am trying to figure our how to attach a picture. I have uploaded his picture and waiting for it to be approved. This is our very first puppy. We got him from a breeder/vet in Wisconsin. I want to thank Dawn for pointing me to this breeder. So far he is being a very good puppy. His potty training is going really well. He started sleeping through the night from the third day we got him home. We are going to puppy kindergarten. We have a 5 year old sheepie neighbor he plays with every other day.

I have been reading posts on this forum everyday since last year. Wonderful information.

I have a quick question on grooming supplies. I just bought a regular pet brush from walmart. Can i get some suggestions on the name and the kind of brush i should use on Buster. I saw a pin brush ,slicker brush - nt sure whichoe i used for what. Do i comb his beard and the haird around his mouth. He picks up a lot of dirt from eating soil and what nots! What kind of comb should i get?

Also, what can i use to wash around his mouth area on a daily basis? (I apologize i am not familiar with all the correct terms for a sheepdog)i got a puppy shampoo from walmart. Is this sufficient or should i get something in particular.

I apologize once i started with questions,i am not able to stop.

Thanks

If it helps, here's a video that I created for another member who claimed to not be tech savvy. After watching this, she was a photo posting fool!! It SHOWS how to post photos.

Nooooo, tooooo cute! Take zillions of these adorable puppy pictures, you will enjoy them in the future......and don't forget to share.

Grooming: have you checked the grooming section here? Carl wrote a rather extensive set of instructions. Eventually you'll need to get into pin brushes and I believe we've discussed them here too. What you find at local shops are not good for sheepies. As their hair grows you will need longer pins...almost scary long when compared to pet store brushes. You'll also want to brush with a conditioner to help with the chore and put less "pull" on the dog. Right now you need to be training Buster all parts of his body are to be brushed, not just the feel-good back and shoulders. Be touching him manually all over with attention to legs, feet, toes, ears, face and neck. Then start with a soft brush just to get him used to that sensation. Short times to begin and teach him this is the most wonderful time with you.
I just want to say that Buster is the best dog name EVER. You got yourself a cutie pie.

Absolutely :D , our Newfy is called Buster.

Welcome, I love Busters black eye patch, he is adorable.

We keep Monty in long coat, I use the Madan pin brushes and they are really good, you can get them on the internet. They are gentle yet do the job and the pins do not push into the pad of pin brush. I have all the firmness of the Madan brushes and use the medium/firm and firm the most.

I have tried all sorts of brushes (from the cheapest to the expensive) and these work best for me.

Dawn kindly mailed me the Bass pin brush for me to try on Monty, but Monty is quite sensitive and the pins are bit heavier and firmer on this brush so it hurts him a bit so we have been using this brush on Buster our Newfoundland and it has really stood up to his courser coat.

You should start brushing gently straight away to get him used to the brushing. When he gets older and the fur gets longer those mats can creep up suddenly, so the sooner you both get in the rhythm the easier it will be in the future.

I use a small pin brush on his face, you can also use a comb, I have the basic comb that has wider apart pins on one end.
You can also use a slicker brush for fluffing up your gorgeous boy once he is brushed with the pin brush.

We wash Monty's face in the shower with hypoallergenic clear washing up liquid to clean off the dirt and regular brushing to keep the chin matt free as it does get matty when it gets dirty.
Welcome and congratulations!! Buster is adorable!!
