HELP!`

I keep Milo's hair long. It was about 7-8 inches long on his back. I took him to the groomer yesterday and asked if they could cut it a little so it wasnt as long and hopefully a little easier to brush. When I went to pick him up I didnt even recognize him! They cut it down to about an inch and shaved his legs. I was devastated! Does anyone know how long it takes to grow their hair back?

First I hope you didnt pay because it's obviously not what you asked for. I wouldn't take him back there either.

It's about 1/2 inch per month.
She said she wasnt going to charge me, but this is where I have been taking him every month for a year and I have never had any problems, so I felt like I should at least pay something because they did bathe him and clip his nails. But your right, I probably should have just taken her offer of "free". I was just shocked that they did what they did. I dont really know of any other groomers in the area that can handle OES so I dont know what I am gonna do for next time.
Deep breath..........the hair comes back quickly. Could be there were more mats there than you believed. They may have had a "booboo" with initial cutting, went too far and had to even it up. Don't give up on them if it was just this time. Next time be specific, "I want no more than 2" removed and write it down." Sheepdogs are not common and most folks want their longer haired dogs trimmed down short for summer. Groomer made a mistake.
LOL!! Thanks, I am breathing better now!! I will definitely be more specific the next time around!!
Our first sheepie came home shaves so close you couldn't see the hair so I have been groomer for the last 40 years.x

If you look around the topics on 'grooming' here, this IS an age old problem with OES's...

I know how hard it is to find a good groomer, one who will spend time on your baby, one who will work any mats you have missed, AND one who will listen to what you want.

Of course, Milo's hair will grow out and, in the long run, he will not be as traumatized are you, from this experience.

I am on my 4th sheepie, and I am fortunate to have found not 1 but 3 good groomers in my area to go to.

IF you are considering a new groomer, I have some suggestions for you:

CALL and talk to the owner of the 'salon'.
ASK if any of their staff has ever worked on an OES and know exactly how to trim them.
ASK...IF they know how to hand scissors, work out any missed mats (as opposed to just chopping~ what an ugly word), do they know how to use a clipper to lightly shape the coat?
WHAT are the approximate charges for all of the above. Many times there are extra fees for mats and hand scissoring.
ASK if they muzzle or sedate ...(yes, some groomer do sedate w/o your knowledge.) I always give them permission to muzzle if needed (which they never do, but NO sedation EVER!!)
GET recommondations from other sheepie owners in your area on WHO they go to.

My various groomers either have worked on OES's or have actually had OES's of their own. I take a picture of what I want her to look like so they have a visual to compare their work to.

I have to tell you, I am VERY specific on what I want...( paw pads shaved, sanitary area cleaned up, nails clipped..NO cutting on the face, head, and in the summer I get her underbelly shaved so she stays cooler when she lays down.)

My groomers know I am picky, HOWEVER...I have given them business from other dog-friends because she looks so great when she has just been groomed.

Before her grooming appointment, I make sure to brush her as much as I can to get all the mats out, but of course I do miss some around her neck, behind her ears.

AND, finally, I am a heck of a tipper!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The other alternative, is to watch all the videos here and on UTube on how to properly groom an OES and do it yourself, which MANY people do here on the forum..but I could NEVER, EVER do that...

I hope this help you in the future.....Good luck and keep us posted
